Lofty's owner Josh Kennard posting the follow note on the cafe's Facebook page Tuesday:
Well we have sad and happy news. Loftys will be closing July 21st. We would like to say thank you for all the people who supported us and all the great times that have been had drinks will be cheap for the next 20 days so come by and have a few.
I spoke with him soon afterward and he clearly conveyed that he's not quite sure what his next step will be, though he is still a co-owner of Olde World Bagels & Deli with his father.
Kennard hinted at some vague plans for adding new elements and programming to the bagel biz, but didn't wish to share too many details at this time since much remains tentative.
As for Lofty's closure, he feels like the tough location — off the main strip and somewhat tucked into a residential area that has yet to boom — has always been the problem with growing the business. He feels he could have continued to "limp along," but at the expense of his own time that he can now devote to fresh ventures.
The 33-year-old says he's been working 60- to 100-hour weeks at various posts since he was 18, so he's "ready to take a break."
As always, the conversation turned to the larger community and Kennard's ongoing effort "to make Colorado Springs a better place" and be "the change we want to see in the world."
The former Rubbish Gallery partner has long been a champion for the local arts and music scene, hosting both concerts and art shows inside his space. Plus there was the cool Lofty's Comic that he collaborated on with then-local artist Jonas McCluggage.
Kennard says that as he and his friends did with Rubbish's closing, he doesn't wish to think of Lofty's closing so much as a goodbye, but a goodbye and hello because for him, this new opportunity presents a time for a "rebirth of ideas."
He says he'll hang onto his Lofty's awnings, because the concept for the space remains "strong in me." Meaning there's some chance we may see another like-minded venture from him down the road. Just hopefully in a more visible, viable location.
