Scenes from a "Brilliant" weekend

Posted By on Mon, Aug 12, 2013 at 5:44 PM

Worries about Manitou Springs were certainly hovering over everyone's minds this weekend, but even so, the arts carried on with two events, one old, one new, that celebrate and proliferate culture. Saturday marked the opening of the Springs' newest art school, ModboCo, as well as one of the top parties of the year, BRILLIANT, a fundraiser for the Galleries of Contemporary Art at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.

At ModboCo, co-owners Brett and Lauren Andrus of the Modbo and S.P.Q.R. galleries hosted an open house all day Saturday, with a good crowd, fellow artist and teacher Erin Jones said, adding that the mid-afternoon ice cream added some incentive.

Up the hill at UCCS, Brilliant proved to be a packed house and glittery affair, with auction items like an original Sean O'Meallie sculpture, handmade dresses by Aaron Graves (who the Indy wrote about here), styrofoam robot pieces by Michael Salter. Following live jazz, the auction and appetizers, the crowd traveled from Berger Hall to the GOCA 1420 gallery for coffee, dessert and a performance by the Ormao Dance Company based on the parade of art clothing also made by Graves, displayed, ever so appropriately, on borderline-creepy mannequins.

While BRILLIANT is now a memory (until next year, anyway), ModboCo is still accepting students for its inaugural semester, which begins later this month. See a class schedule here.

That said, here are scenes from the ModboCo grand opening, and the BRILLIANT soiree. All photos by Edie Adelstein.
