UCCS arts center coming together

Posted By on Wed, Aug 28, 2013 at 12:01 PM

Yesterday, the Colorado Springs Business Journal reported that plans for the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs' new visual and performing arts building are coming right along.

Cameron Moix explained that the $58 million building has about a quarter of the needed funds raised and a tentative timetable set: the building design is set to be planned early next year, and construction to start in early 2015. UCCS Chancellor Pam Shockley-Zalabak estimates the building to be completed in 2017. It will be LEED gold-certified, like all future UCCS buildings.

The facility, which will be located on North Nevada Avenue, will hold the UCCS Visual and Performing Arts department (now in Columbine Hall), the Galleries of Contemporary Art (now in Centennial Hall; GOCA 121 will remain downtown) and TheatreWorks (located down the hill in University Hall). It may be split up depending on future plans, dividing the visual and performing components.

Of course, funding isn't easy, especially when the state now only gives UCCS 8 cents of every dollar, instead of 54 cents, as it did back in 2002. Moix writes that UCCS is looking for other resources and donors.
