Changes in today's arpillera talk

Posted By on Thu, Oct 3, 2013 at 11:56 AM

From the listings desk: This week, we wrote short piece on Chilean arpilleras and Dr. Marjorie Agosin, who has studied them since their inception during the Pinochet regime. Agosin was scheduled to speak today at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs and tour the collection of arpilleras on display there.

However, Agosin has since canceled due to a family emergency. Instead, Dr. Suzanne MacAulay, professor and chair of the Department of Visual and Performing Arts, will speak and Andrea Herrera will read some of Agosin's poetry. Janice Gould will play selections of Victor Jarra's songs. (According to an email from MacAulay, Jarra was a folk hero before his murder in Pinochet's coup.)

The arpilleras will still be on display through Saturday as part of UCCS' focus on the 40th anniversary of the coup in Chile and to "honor all the people who died and suffered because of terrible injustices."
