This time last year, local artist Mark Wong was busy creating 1,000 ceramic platters for the Galleries of Contemporary Art. Now, he's made a series of mugs that cover a wall at Mabel's Cafe inside the Manitou Art Center's Venue 515. The wall  was installed in honor of the MAC's 25th anniversary.

Each mug, like the platters before, is painted with a unique design; abstract, in this case, unlike the platters before, which depicted images of cranes. But like those cranes, these mugs all together make up a larger whole.

From the artist, via an MAC newsletter:

"There is a tea ceremony that entails drinking the tea, admiring the vessel from all angles and, at the end, smashing the vessel. Thus is the ephemeral nature of beauty celebrated. The picture seen in the "Mug Shot" celebrates this idea in a whole new way. No pieces are destroyed, but by removing individual mugs, the portrait is."
You can buy the mugs for $15 each (last-minute gift idea!), but then there will be a moratorium on sales at the end of the year, in which "a new picture will be born to be celebrated at an opening around the middle of January. More updates to follow!"
