Those who appreciate the classical music world’s most widely celebrated composers will be pleased by the Colorado Springs Philharmonic’s 2014-15 season, which was announced at Friday evening’s Pikes Peak Center performance.

Although the works being performed are, in many cases, less well-known than their composers, there’s no arguing with the popular appeal of a repertoire that includes Ravel’s Bolero, Puccini’s Tosca and Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring, alongside works by Beethoven, Brahms, Haydn, and Copland.

The local orchestra will also be reprising its multi-media “Vanguard Series,” which consists of Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4, Mozart’s Requiem and Bartok’s The Miraculous Mandolin.

Other noteworthy season offerings include a February 26 performance by violinist Joshua Bell. In addition to widespread critical acclaim and a Grammy Award, Bell is known for a viral video in which he performed in the guise of a street musician and went unrecognized by all but one passerby, earning $32.17 for his 45 minute-performance.

Rounding out the season are holiday concerts as well as a Philharmonic Pops series that features the music of The Who, Disney’s Fantasia, and an American Songbook performance by, as the season’s brochure puts it, “stage, film and TV heartthrob” Cheyenne Jackson.
