It's not easy being James B. Comey.

First, the director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation had to confront the looming specter of marijuana use, as he joked in a Wall Street Journal report on Tuesday.

"I have to hire a great work force to compete with those cybercriminals, and some of those kids want to smoke weed on the way to the interview," the WSJ quoted Comey as saying.

Naturally, this drew the attention of Washington, D.C.'s more humorless sect, notably Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions, who yesterday sought to determine whether or not the FBI would soon be overrun with potheads.

"You are a national leader, and I'm confused about a few things," he said to Comey in a hearing. "I was very disappointed about the Wall Street Journal article on May 20 in which you seem to make light of marijuana use by those who wish to work for the FBI. ...

"Do you understand that that could be interpreted as one more example of leadership in America dismissing the seriousness of marijuana use, and that could undermine our ability to convince young people not to go down that dangerous path?"

"Uh, very much senator," Comey replied. "I am determined not to lose my sense of humor, but unfortunately there I was trying to be both serious and funny." He then recounts the story, before Sessions interrupts him to read more reasons weed is the devil.
