Craft Lager Festival cancelled for 2014

Posted By on Thu, Jun 5, 2014 at 10:29 AM

Yesterday, Westword managing editor Jonathan Shikes posted this article, titled "New organizers cancel Craft Lager Festival, citing a lack of breweries, planning."

Norris Penrose Event Center general manager Johnny Walker is quoted as saying:
We were a bit late with our invitations as well. Mistakes were made. Deadlines were missed. As a result of that, instead of trying to pull it off and having an inferior event, we decided to pull the plug and bring it back next year to the level it was meant to be at.
This is just one year after the Waldo Canyon flooding in Manitou Springs destroyed much of the festival's equipment, such as fencing, forcing the event into Norris-Penrose as a back-up venue.

Then-president Julian Heron already had plans to hand the event over to the center, "to sustain it and grow it."

This clearly isn't what Heron, who once rallied for a Manitou Springs Amphitheater to be built, had in mind, as Shikes quotes Heron responding:

Saying that they couldn't get enough vendors is not, in my mind, the real issue. We've held it in the second week of August for eleven years, so most of the breweries already had it on their calendar ... I think they failed in the execution.
A look at the festival's website seems to reveal not only no helpful information, but an apparent takeover of spam ads — not good.

On its Facebook page, where the news apparently was announced (sad emoticon included), culpability comes in the form of this posting:
We are just as upset as everyone else. We have spent countless hours trying to get brewers to participate and just weren't able to come up with enough. All tickets from 2013 will be honored next year.
We have a call into Heron for comment, and will either update this posting or likely share more info in next week's Side Dish.
