  • The Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus has been on the bad side of animal rights organizations for its treatment of its elephants.
The Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus is in town. And Colorado Springs animal advocates are out in force to protest the way the circus treats its elephants.

Animal ACTion Network Colorado has already held the first of a planned six protests at the World Arena, where the Circus takes place. They will be protesting starting an hour and a half before each performance: once tonight, from 5:30 to 7:15 p.m., and twice each tomorrow and Sunday, from 1:30 to 3:15 p.m. and from 5:30 to 7:15 p.m.

PETA held a protest downtown on Thursday afternoon, prominently featuring a baby elephant costume with crutches and a bandaged head wound.

The Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus has long been the target of animal rights agencies due to its alleged treatment of elephants. In 2011, the cricus was fined $270,000 for violations of the Animal Welfare Act, the largest fine any circus has ever received. More recently, Los Angeles has banned the use of the bullhook – a stick with a metal end-piece Ringling Bros. uses to train elephants – and other blunt instruments in the training of animals, to take effect in 2017. LA Weekly writer Dennis Romero noted the Ringling Bros. circus said it will not come to LA if the ban is in effect. Several countries have banned circuses from using elephants, including Sweden, India, Greece and Bolivia.
