As if the North American continent isn't enough to keep Northern Command
busy. Now, a group of retired admirals and generals have generated a report calling for the military agency to take over the Arctic region — a prize that Russia already is trying lay dibs to, as reported by Defense News
Based at Peterson Air Force Base
here, NorthCom was created after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks to oversee homeland security and lend aid during civil disasters.
NorthCom and the North American Aerospace Defense Command
, a bi-national command with Canada, which also is located at Peterson, have been discussing Arctic issues since 2006 or so.
Here's a recent related article on this issue and why it's important, from the Alaska Dispatch
This group of retired admirals and generals, the CNA Military Advisory Board
, also has weighed in on how climate change
affects national security.
How such an assignment would impact staffing at NorthCom here isn't clear, but the Arctic has been on NorthCom's radar for awhile. For related information on that, go here.
