I ran into tourism executive Doug Price at the mayor's state of the city luncheon today at the Broadmoor International Center and tried to make an appointment to meet with him next week.

"Oh, I can't," Price said with a grin. "I'll be in Greece."

Price, president and CEO of the Colorado Springs Convention and Visitors Bureau, is one of a group from Colorado Springs who will visit Ancient Olympia, Greece, the Springs' newest sister city. A delegation from Olympia came here several weeks ago, and it's time to return the favor.

Here's the news release just out from the city:

A delegation from Colorado Springs will visit our newest Sister City, Ancient Olympia from June 15-19 for a Sister City ceremony at the ancient Olympic site and a visit to the International Olympic Academy (IOA) during the annual International Session for Young Participants in the Olympic Movement. The members of the delegation are traveling as invited guests of the City of Ancient Olympia, the IOA and the Greek government. The trip is a follow up to the April visit to Colorado Springs from Ancient Olympia Vice Mayor Aristideis Panagiotopoulos and IOA Director Dr. Dionyssis S. Gangas when the sister city relationship was first established.

Representing the City of Colorado Springs on behalf of Mayor Bach will be City Council President Pro Tem Merv Bennett, who will be accompanied by his wife, Roseann, and Harris Kalofonos. Mr. Kalofonos is an International Consultant of the International Olympic Academy, Manager of Development and Marketing at USA Wrestling in Colorado Springs, and Chairman of the Ancient Olympia Sister City Committee. The City of Colorado Springs is paying airfare expenses only for Council President Pro Tem Bennet, Mrs. Bennet and Harris Kalofonos.

Joining President Pro Tem Bennett and Mr. Kalofonos will be: Chris Jenkins, President of Nor’wood Development Group; Alicia McConnell, Chair of the Colorado Springs Convention and Visitors Bureau Board of Directors and Director of Training Sites & Community Partnerships for the United States Olympic Committee; and Doug Price, President and CEO of the Colorado Springs Convention and Visitors Bureau.

The Annual International Session for Young Participants is the most important event of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the International Olympic Academy during non-Olympic years. It is attended by IOC President Dr. Thomas Bach and representatives of national Olympic committees from around the world. The opening ceremony will be held under the Parthenon/Acropolis in Athens, Greece on June 16. The City of Ancient Olympia will host a sister city ceremony on the ancient Olympic grounds on June 18.

Ancient Olympia Sister City Relationship
Colorado Springs and Ancient Olympia officially became sister cities during the Colorado Springs City Council Meeting on April 8, 2014. Ancient Olympia is the birthplace of the Olympic Games more than 2,700 years ago and the home of the International Olympic Academy (IOA). Colorado Springs is home to the United States Olympic Committee, 22 National Governing Bodies of Olympic and Paralympic Sport, and the world’s finest high altitude Olympic Training Center. Being sister cities with Ancient Olympia, Greece enhances the unique relationship our community has with the modern Olympic movement.

Colorado Springs Sister Cities International
Colorado Springs has six other sister cities: Bankstown, Australia; Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan; Fujiyoshida, Japan; Kaohsiung, Taiwan; Nuevo Casas Grandes, Mexico; and Smolensk, Russia. For more information or to volunteer to help with any of the Sister City Committees, visit http://www.sistercitycs.us/.
