Randy Stagner, who's helping with a petition drive to recall Sheriff Terry Maketa, reports today that about 25,000 signatures have been gathered toward the required 44,373. Stagner says the effort's goal is 50,000, because historically signatures get tossed due to people not being registered to vote. Petitioners have until July 12 to turn in the signatures in order to get the recall on the November general election ballot.

On hand for the table set up outside the courthouse was Teri Goodall, undersheriff from 2003 to 2007 who worked on Maketa's first campaign in 2003.

She's now turned against Maketa saying his dalliances with women who work for him, as previously reported, have created a hostile work environment that puts taxpayer funds at risk. Three commanders, along with six others, have filed complaints of one kind or another alleging sex discrimination or hostile work environment.

Asked why she and others didn't become involved in 2010 after the Independent reported Maketa's strange relationships with subordinates, Goodall said she didn't know but guessed that the work environment had not become hostile until more recently.

"When three commanders file an EEOC complaint because of the hostile work environment, it's become so bad that I have to become involved," she said.

El Paso County commissioners have ordered an employment investigation of the Sheriff's Office. A criminal investigation reportedly also is under way.

Meantime, Maketa, in his third four-year term, reportedly left recently for Alaska, where his father and brother live, for a little R & R.
