'The Swings' is up and installed in Green Mountain Falls

Monday, I had the pleasure of experiencing the brand new "The Swings: An Exercise in Musical Cooperation," an interactive art installation, part of the upcoming Green Box Arts Festival.

To be blunt, "The Swings" is a singing swingset. But don't think that makes it simple or dinky. As we'll explain in more detail in next week's paper, "The Swings" is an experiment in cooperation between strangers. Each swing in the group produces a sound with a pitch that changes the higher you go. Alone, you produce a soft plinking sound, but together the swings produce more complex melodies — music.

"The Swings" arrived in GMF last week with its creators, Daily tous les jours, a design studio from Montreal. Daily built "21 Balançoires" in its hometown in 2011 and this is its first touring version. GMF is its first stop, with future destinations yet to be decided, though India and New York City are players.

This being Colorado, "The Swings" has already weathered a hail storm, but came out unscathed, and from now until July 13, you can swing for free daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. And you should really do it. Anyone will enjoy it, I promise.

Green Box isn't just "The Swings" either. As always, it's offering a schedule full of classes on topics like music, photography and landscaping; a screening of the documentary My Blood; dance performances from KEIGWIN + COMPANY and the American Ballet Theatre Studio Company; and concerts from the Chamber Orchestra of the SpringsArk Life and bluegrass artists Mike Bub, Don Rigsby, Jeremy Abshire, Michael Daves and Keith Reed. Find a full line-up here.
