So many bands have launched crowd-funding campaigns in recent years that we’ve been limiting our coverage to local music people in need of serious medical assistance.

But Ryan Flores, of the currently-on-hiatus duo Moonhoney, is working on a project with ambitions that go beyond most. His aim is to start his own indie label, Heart Shaped Records, which will release music of his own and by others.

“The first two releases are already recorded and getting airtime on KRCC,” Flores explained in a recent email. “The next two are already written, and I’m planning a Tom Waits tribute record backed by Grant Sabin and Alex Koshak. We’ve played a couple sets of Waits out live and will begin recording this fall. I’m also planning an album of classical music with several musicians in the area, as well as a host of Latin music.”

The artist feels his label will bring diversity to a local scene dominated by indie rock and Americana. “Not to disparage any genre or artist,” he adds, “as all are making important contributions. However, being Latino, I feel as though our music is mournfully underrepresented here.”

Flores’s indiegogo campaign, which runs through Aug. 11, can be found here.
