Colorado Springs at-large City Councilor Val Snider plans to seek a second term, he tells the Independent over coffee earlier today.

That's no surprise, but it sets the stage for next year's April 7 city election when voters will choose three at-large councilors and a mayor. (Mayor Steve Bach recently told a group of Republicans he wouldn't run, according to City Councilor Helen Collins who was there and told the Gazette he said he wouldn't run. Bach has said publicly he hasn't decided whether he'll run.)

Snider was elected at large in 2011 at the same time Merv Bennett won his first term and Jan Martin, her second. Martin can't run another time due to term limits.

The filing period doesn't begin until January.

Snider says he remembers when he ran the first time, he took out a petition on the last possible day and scurried around downtown collecting signatures. It was in February and was "frigid cold," he recalls.

"I was down here [downtown] pounding the pavement," he says. "I ran into Les Gruen by Phantom Canyon and he said he'd sign it but my pen froze up."

Asked why he wants another four years of brain damage, he says, "I hate to waste what I've learned already about local government."

Snider, a retired Air Force officer, is in the midst of an effort to persuade voters to create the Pikes Peak Regional Drainage Authority, an effort on which he's worked for about two years. He also is among councilors in charge of a study of how long to keep the downtown coal-fired Drake Power Plant on line, which he says is expected to be resolved on Aug. 20.
