As you're probably well aware, Meadow Muffins closed for business
back in early September. The following week, in my Side Dish column
, we heard from The Hatch Cover
's owners, who swooped in to take over the spot, promising a new entity of some sort soon.
Well, that day arrived last week, when Mother Muff's
quietly opened to train its staff. It's now open daily from 8 a.m. to 2 a.m., serving its full menu till 1 a.m.
And that menu is roughly two-thirds breakfast items, says co-owner Susan Hirt, noting "fun and interesting things, not just biscuits and gravy."
Things like a bacon bowl
, stuffed French toast and breakfast sandwiches made between two waffles as the bread.
"What sets us apart also," she says, "is that 90-percent of our menu is made in house ... we even hand-batter our own mozzarella sticks."
A cool cocktail menu takes its lead from the breakfast theme, leading with house-juiced bloody mary drinks with customizable options — not a build-your-own-bar, but options for different juice and garnish additions.
There's also coffee and Champagne cocktails and "lots of drinks named off of things your mom would say to you."
To satisfy regular bar-food tastes, Mother Muff's does also offer pizza, burgers, sandwiches and prime rib from Thursdays through Saturdays.
Live music will soon kick off in the back area on Friday and Saturday nights, and you'll immediately notice a simplification in the decor, which "really sets off how beautiful the room is," says Hirt, noting original architectural touches that had been previously covered by neon and kitschy items.
Look for an official grand opening celebration on Dec. 19 and 20.
