A wolf by the ears

A predatory wolf hunts a young lad and his animal friends a bird, a cat and a duck, all of them scampering around in tights. That's what you get in the Colorado Springs Philharmonic's family-friendly Peter and the Wolf, performed with the Ballet Society of Colorado Springs.

"It is not always thought of as a ballet," says David Sckolnik, marketing consultant for the ballet society. "The dancers are bouncing around in cute little animal costumes, and their movements are so much like the animals."

According to Sckolnik, the ballet society is introducing the original ballet to accompany the Philharmonic's narrated orchestration of Sergei Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf. More than a dozen top pre-professional dancers from the Colorado Springs Dance Society and Youth Ballet will be guest performers of the Colorado Springs Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Thomas Wilson.

"No one ever grows tired of it," Sckolnik says. "It's that entertaining."

The Philharmonic Orchestra will then unite with the Colorado Springs Youth Symphony to execute the exhilarating " William Tell Overture" and to play music from the hit movie Pirates of the Caribbean . Peter and the Wolf is the premiere of the philharmonic's three Family Series concerts to be danced by The Ballet Society at the Pikes Peak Center.
