after the drivers and runners take their cracks at the mountain, watch the cyclists do the same, if only for fun. Spectators can hang around in Manitou Springs that day for the fourth annual Peak Region Cyclist Bicycle Festival, a cornucopia of all things human-powered and be-wheeled. Held on the Pikes Peak Highway.
This is a past event.

Assault on the Peak

When: Sun., Aug. 28 2011
ridepikespeak.com

Can't make it to Denver today to see the final stage of the USA Pro Cycling Challenge? That's OK. You can fill your bike cravings locally. Up to 1,500 cyclists will be taking on the second annual Assault on the Peak (ridepikespeak.com). The aforementioned peak, of course, is Pike's very own fourteener, and when those crazy folk finish off the 49-mile closed-course event, they'll be having a beer at the free and open-to-the-public fourth annual Peak Region Cyclist Bicycle Festival in Manitou Springs' Memorial Park (502 Manitou Ave., peakregioncyclist.com), which runs from 10 to 5. Come congratulate the riders on a job well done, and check out gear vendors, BMX demos and a bike swap. — Kirsten Akens
