Oh, what a week, eh? Don't you just love how Colorado has all four seasons? I just wish they all didn't come down on the same day! Oh well ... once more into the breach, dear friends ...
The Underground, in cooperation with Bristol Elementary and VH-1's Save the Music Foundation, will be hosting an event on Saturday, April 4, called S'cool Beats. The fundraiser for the elementary school's music program will feature more than 25 DJs performing on three separate stages, all to raise money for purchasing student violins.
Organizer Fred Richardson hopes that the state's offer to match funds 2-to-1 will be enough incentive to get people in the door. If they raise $100, the state will pitch in $200, but if they raise $1,000, the state will have to pony up $2Gs! C'mon everybody, them fiddles ain't gonna buy themselves! And speaking of missing fiddles, the Hollyfelds, a superb group of country-fried Denverites led by the talented Eryn Hoerig and Kate Grigsby will be down at the Rocket Room the same Saturday to celebrate the release of their second studio album, Black Heart Blue. Coincidentally, it features mandolin, dobro, banjo, autoharp, ukulele, piano, accordion and both the six- and 12-string guitars, but yet, not a single fiddle. If only S'cool Beats had been around when they were kids ...
Named after ber-nerd and urban folk hero Lazlo Hollyfeld (aka the guy who lives in the secret closet in the '80s teen romp, Real Genius), the Hollyfelds have made a name for themselves in the Greater Denver Metropolitan with a solid debut release, 2008's Saratoga. The album was produced by Grammy-nominated Ric Hordinski and mastered by Masaki, best known for his work with Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.
The Hollyfields have also earned a steady stream of solid shows and positive press, including a 2008 award in the Westword Music Showcase for the "Country / Alt-Country" category. And if you know a damn thing about the Denver alt-country scene, that's one hell of an accomplishment especially considering that nobody ever gave them one friggin' fiddle! Wetting the evening's whistle will be another excellent performance by the Chris Winters Show and a debut from Roosterd, the new project by Matt Freeman, Jon Saultz, Steve Bauer and Patrick Ledbetter.
A bit of bad news to report ... Jimbo's Take 2, the old-timey, down-home local venue with the big-timey national blues ambitions, will be closing its doors after a final, sold-out performance by the Jim Adam Blues Band on Friday, April 3.
Jimbo (Jim Adam), an equal to any of the masters he had hosted, instead will be concentrating on his own music career. He and the band's keyboardist, John Stilwagen, will be performing at Swallow Hill in Denver on Saturday, April 11, and the full Jim Adam Blues Band will be performing at Stargazers Event Center on Friday, May 1.
Lastly this week, the Haunted Windchimes have just returned from another brief jaunt to the Hawaiian isles, which included a performance on KTUH, "Hawaii's Only Alternative." They will play a free "homecoming" at Kinfolks Mountain Shop on Saturday, April 4, at 8 p.m. Early attendance is not just recommended, it is required.
