Bear of a weekend
As first reported by KRDO Newschannel 13, the Black Bear Restaurant (10375 Ute Pass Road, Green Mountain Falls, blackbearrestaurant.com) ran into some tax trouble last week. In a voicemail greeting Monday, Victor Matthews termed the seizure of his fine-dining establishment "a little emergency" that led to temporary closure.
Matthews owed the Colorado Department of Revenue more than $13,000, but reportedly settled the debt Monday and is set to resume normal hours.
Matthews is also the creator and dean of Paragon Culinary School, which was not affected by the state's action. Says school office manager (and mother) Darlene Matthews: "We didn't find out about the taxes until Friday afternoon, so we weren't able to work on it until Monday."
Victor Matthews did not return multiple calls from the Indy, but the KRDO report cited misplaced bills and faxes as the reason for the oversight.
Delicious irony
Marge Vasquez, owner of the 43-year-old Bean Bandit (320 N. Circle Drive, 634-9945), says she planned to open Bean Bandit 2 on North Academy Boulevard in mid-October, but the site's previous owners stripped out all of the internal wiring before leaving.
"We were planning on going in, and just putting our colors [on the walls]," she says. "But now all that's delayed."
Asked why she's expanding now, Vasquez says she's always wanted to turn her restaurant into a franchise, and cites her sons — part-owners and operators of the new location — as the driving force.

• Slayton's Tejon Street Barbecue (28A S. Tejon St., slaytonsbbq.com) is reinventing itself, says manager George Shufelt. Now called Tejon Street Grill, its menu will soon include more American food items, like additional sandwich and salad options as well as Kobe beef burgers.

• Attend a Mediterranean-themed progressive dinner featuring Old Colorado City stalwarts Pizzeria Rustica, Jake & Telly's, Gertrude's Restaurant and Paravicini's Italian Bistro from 6 to 9 p.m., Monday, Oct. 12. Park at Paravicini's, head to Pizzeria Rustica and eat your way back to your car. Cost is $49 plus tax and tip; call 632-8121 for reservations.
