Re: “Aspen Auto Clinic - Mark Dabling Blvd.

To reiterate: We have no say in what our readers choose as "best" in any particular category. We're not endorsing anyone; we're passing on our readers' opinions. That's the construct of our Best Of. And no one at the Indy is eating, well or otherwise, because of what our readers have said about an auto clinic.

Re: “Aspen Auto Clinic - Mark Dabling Blvd.

Agreed, det. These bigger shops are total vultures. I was able to get a repair done for less than $100 recently while some of the shops were quoting me over $600. Took it to Tinker's garage on Union and Willamette. Good work, good service, very fast, very honest. I know the Indy has bills to pay and people to feed(well?), but why endorse people like this who make a living ripping people off?

A friend of mine was quoted by Aspen for a new starter at over $700. What a sham. $700 for a $60 part and less than an hour of work? Some might say that's a con. Are you endorsing them simply for the shuttle service? I would think honesty in a mechanic would trump any frilly service or limited warranty they may offer.

I'm beginning to think these endorsements go the the more 'generous' companies around here. I hope nobody takes this 'best of' crap seriously. Aspen doesn't deserve any positive press. You might consider doing some 'independent' research for these companies, regardless of what the 'public' voted for.

Re: “Aspen Auto Clinic - Mark Dabling Blvd.

Aspen auto clinic is a total ripoff. My daughter went to Aspen on Mark Dabling blvd. for a front end alignment. They told her correctly that she needed a new steering knuckle, however this is the only thing they got correct. They lied to her, stating that she needed also a new hub bearing, camber bolt, bearing seal, when in fact this all is one unit that comes with the steering knuckle.

They quoted her $1005.51 for a new or $777.34 for a used steering knuckle. She knew something was up as this was a ridiculous price. She went to another shop in town and the total cost was $230.45, including the front-end alignment. Aspen had the audacity to charge her $27 for the alignment test when she told them she would forgo the repair.

She spent a fraction of the cost and her car is now driving very nicely. Again, do NOT take your car to Aspen auto clinic unless you want to be chargee 4 times the actual cost of repairs.

Re: “Garden of the Gods Gourmet

I'm a big fan of Garden of the Gods Gourmet. Love their take-home soups, breads, and Curry Chicken Salad. I recently tried their "Dinner with the Chef" and had a wonderful evening enjoying food prepared in the kitchen by Chef Larissa. The food was wonderful and the price was very reasonable. You have to make reservations in advance, but I would highly recommend it to others.

Re: “Briar Mart

The selection of items is broad. Store is very clean and organized, and the owner(s) very friendly and customer oriented. I always have to have Baklava once I get to the register, the smell is heavenly.

Re: “Bryan & Scott Jewelers

Bryan and Scott Jewelers is by far the best jewelry and fine antique store in Colorado Springs. No othere store in the city can compare. By going to Bryan and Scott, one can see items of exquisite beauty that can usually be found only in large cosmopolitan cities in this country and in Europe. It is truly a connoiseure's treasure.

Re: “West Side Bargain Mart

I visited West Side Bargain Mart and was sorely disappointed, couldn't find canned
vegetables that I could recognise, there were no bakery items including bread to
be found, no pasta, store was not worth the time to find anything. I used to go to
the Mart when it was on Boulder Street and really enjoyed the shopping there. Had
no problem finding was I was looking for. Such a shame that store closed. Haven't
been back to the west side location since that one and only time.

Re: “Bob Penkhus Volvo Mazda at Motor City

Worst dealer I have ever dealt with. MILITARY BEWARE. They have hidden costs and will try to sell you insurance disguised as a "Dont sue me waiver". If you read the papers they quickly throw in front of you, you'll catch it.

The sales manager was rude and unprofessional. They told us one payment plan then when the financial paperwork came, they raised it, didnt even mention it, and expected us to sign right then and there. They told my buddy that the optional insurance that you buy was a waiver so they cant be sued when he drives his car. Didnt even tell him that it was optional AND that it would cost him more money. Granted he should of read it before he signed it, so we take responsibility for the charges, but that doesnt make them innocent of dishonesty and being con-artists. They also decided that it was a great time to start bashing all the other dealers in Motor City. If you go to, there are plenty of bad experience reviews on these guys. Pikes Peak Acura was FAR better and treated us at least like human beings.

Re: “Great Harvest Bread

Tremendous breads. Best Whole Wheat I've ever had, except for my own "Al Dente Whole Wheat" secret recipe. Nice people. Free samples on the counter. Marvelous Chocolate Chip Pumpkin Loaf that is heavy and dense. Many healthy breads to choose from.

Re: “Garden of the Gods Gourmet

I love dropping by Garden of the Gods Gourmet for the samples they always have out and about. Their sandwiches are delicious and I've enjoyed many of their take-and-bake items as well. The only thing I wish they'd do is add natural/organic/grass-fed beef/poultry/etc. to their dishes. Any added cost would definitely be worth it.
