My family and I recently went to the movies (Cinema Pt.) but had some time to waste so we went for a quick lunch at Nawlins next door. I should have left after my first impression; dirty floors, dirty tables, and stank smell. We sat ourselves at the cleanest table we could find (still pretty gross) and waited for our waitress. We ordered our food and it came out, I was excited to try alligator and my softshell crab. I asked the waitress when ordering why the crab was cheaper than the shrimp or other fried appetizers, she replied "dunno" but stated she tried it and it was good. When it showed up there was 1 tiny shriveled crab on a bed of undercooked fries. The alligator bites were tasteless and hushpuppys were hard as rocks and cold. Much like the earlier commenter my daughter had 1 chicken nugget and told us she was done (old grease funny smell). Oh btw, when the waitress brought out our food she failed to bring silverware/napkins. When they showed up the napkins were soiled with dried food and the silverware was foggy (not clean). I've spent a lot of time in Biloxi and New Orleans, but I gotta say this place brought back zero memories of the wonderful food I experienced there. After the Gazette and the Indy did reviews on the Falcon location for Nawlins I must admit I was excited to try this place, but left disappointed (must blame the management for these conditions).
@ Ishhod, you are a stand up person. I too do not support his establishments since that inappropriate beating.
@ restless native, if you were beaten senseless and the attacker was not disciplined, wouldn't you call and want to yell about it! I know I would!!! I would yell to the world about it. It is wrong and unjust.
This place has great authentic cajun food and really good drinks! The owner is from New Orleans and knows how to cook cajun style food. I'd recommend this place to any body who likes cajun style food and BBQ.
Also, they have Karaoke on thursday nights, I had a lotta fun!
I wouldn't give this place 1 out of 5 stars....Me and my lady went there, the serving was so small we had to go to Chipotles right after leaving. The price was twice what we paid to eat a good substantial meal at Chipotles. We left our complaint with our waitress, thought maybe the owner would come over to chat, but he couldn't be bothered. We will never return....4 out of 5 stars, you have got to be out of your mind!!
I really can't believe this restaurant has 4 out of 5 stars!!! Both my husband and I had a SEVERE case of FOOD POISONING! This was the WORST Cajun food! I will NEVER go back! The food and drinks were both OVERPRICED! I would strongly suggest you save your money, and health and dine elsewhere.
Stopped in to Oscar's for a late lunch last week and a Black and Blue Burger with home fries. It was darn near a 10! One of my favorite places to stop when Im downtown.
@ Ishhod -- get the real story about the "physical altercation" before repeating your slander. Granted I'm a fan of Oscar's and I've gotten the full story from Phil (the "OWNER") and I've been at the bar when the "female" in question has called well intoxicated to scream at the employees. Get some facts behind that story. Oscar's rocks -- go for the killer burger!
I won't eat there especially since the well mannered OWNER was involved in a physical altercation with a female customer. And the employees were too afraid for their jobs to speak against him.
Love the atmosphere. Very Southern. Food is pretty good. Great drink specials and occasional live music. Shrimp poboys and oysters is what I recommend
Boudin was fair but a bit ricey. Gumbo tasted burnt but I only tried once. The bread pudding was phenomenal and One of the Best I have EVER tasted. Etouffee was tomato based. The shrimp were well seasoned and fresh. I would return for desert but not basics
Gumbo lacks substance. Cuisine is fair but lacks authentic flavor.
I purposely save my limited dining dollars for local businesses. I had been to the North location and enjoyed it so went today 'cause I'd been craving oysters (which they touted on their chalk-board entry menu). I arrived at the ordering counter and waited ten minutes with no person in site. I then saw someome arrive through the front door right into the "employee's only" door. I waited minutes more (craving, you know). Still nobody comes to the front of the house (there is no back of the house); ulimately I leave a handwritten note explaining I had drive to eat there and waited to do so, I left my phone #'s and name but no contact. I had been a fan and patron of the North location, but no more . . . what a let down.
Pepper and spice does not equal Cajun food. Their food lacked the richness of authentic Cajun food. They're crawfish was chewy and the service was lacking. I will not be going there again.
Shhhhhhhh, This place is my secret..........wonderful food and service
Loved it. The muffaletta was really, really good. It's on my crave list now.
The basics - jambalaya, gumbo, and red beans were tasty and had an original flavor. What I mean by that is that they didn't taste like what my dad makes, but that's fine - they had their own flavor and didn't tasted canned or like just a half-hearted attempt at cajun food.
We'll definitely go back, and we'll make sure to take the kids so that they can roast marshmallows (evenings on weekends).
Yummy food, good time, great price. I went for the first time for lunch. The prices could not be beat. The serve was way faster then at most fast food places LOL. I had the pork sandwich it was so good. I will be going back for more.
We love this place from the PO'Boys to the mother of all hamburgers. We just wish the plates came with more of those SUPER FRESH and GREAT SEASONED french fries.
I went to Culpeppers today, We had the seafood platter, and a quartet of Crawfish Etouffee, Red beans and Rice, Maque Choux, and chicken and sausage gumbo. The only thing authentic Cajun about Culpeppers was the music!!! I grew up in New Orleans, that was some of the poorest attemts at reproducing cajun food I have seen in YEARS!!!! Not only was the food terrible, the male owner who took care of our order and "service" he was also smoking in the restaurants office. He left the door open, needless to say the smell was not of the poorly made half-a$$ed food. When the gentleman asked how the food was, I responded kindly by nodding no, he then grumbled about peoples opinions, and different Ideas of cajun, blah blah blah. He seemed very bitter, and had no passion or thanks for even having customers. There was another table that was occupied by coffee drinkers, go figure... Needless to say I Wasted 30+ dollars on food I could have made from a box at home. In my opinion they should have stayed closed!!! I think Cajun food should stay in the south, because nobody here can seem to reproduce it!!! I Will add them to my list of places never to recommend or to return to. I hope this saves someone else their hard earned money, I wish someone would have warned me!! Thanks
Re: “Nawlins BarBQ and Seafood”
amazing waste of money - they bought off the paper's reviewer?
