I would not call this an authentic Cajun eatery, but it isn't a bad place to go if you have time before your movie starts in the same strip mall. I've been here three times, and it's not great, but it'll do. The green chili is really good, but really spicy and I would say get a bowl for dinner. The alligator bites were VERY greasy, I'm not sure if that is normally how alligator tastes. I was not a fan of the red beans and rice- the beans were undercooked to my liking. The gumbo was good- not great, but does in a pinch. Great service even in a "seat yourself" venue.

the best seafood in town is at Bonefish...the menu on this place's bad website isn't even tempting...and no lobster roll is listed.
Who wrote this review? Did they even go to the restaurant?

Always a tough choice to go here or not. By far the best seafood in the springs. However it will be an hour before you get your food, and the waitstaff will not check on you unless prompted. If Mr. English would hire a real staff instead of relying on family this place would take off.

AWFUL! The service was terrible, our server was more concerned with finding a cell phone charger and chatting with other servers than doing her job. We never received the cornbread we wanted as they were out of it (at 5 on a Friday) and then were given terrible hush puppies as a replacement that we did not want. The sausage platter was WAY too spicy, I'm sure that was to hid the tough, overly fatty sausage. The pulled pork was tasteless, very fatty and gritty, and cold. Both my husband and I had food poisoning from eating there. I have found that others had the same experience. I don't know how anyone feels they are having a good experience here unless you are drunk when you arrive. (You'd have to be drunk before you arrive as the server will NEVER come back to see if you want another drink once you've ordered one.)

It is simply other worldly...and now with the connecting hotel, it is as easy going downtown to leave town. And at Colo Springs rates, not New York's!

Just another lame (and futile) attempt in Colorado at mixing several Louisiana culinary cultures that seem completely misunderstood outside of the New Orleans metro area, in Acadiana centered around Lafayette, or in North Louisiana above Alexandria. Whenever you read of a Colorado restaurant specializing in "New Orleans Cajun Cuisine," you do not have to even leave home, much less waste money on a meal that will be unsatisfactory. This is because some ignorant (or fraudulent) proprietor is attempting to mix two or more completely unrelated culinary cultures that seldom come together, even in Louisiana. The difference is that New Orleans cuisine is not Cajun, and is instead more French, Creole, or even Italian in nature. Some of the crap found at "Nawlins," (a stupid phonetic way that local Louisianaians pronounce New Orleans) would never be found in any Orleans or Jefferson Parish restaurant. Conversely, such New Orleans specialties as the Muffuletta (Italian), beignets, and some forms of rice beans and rice would be rare or nonexistent in Acadiana, which is Cajun Country in Southwest Louisiana west of the Mississippi River and mostly south of Opelousas. Other "Cajun specialities" offered at "Nawlins" are nether Cajun nor Creole; rather, they are derived from the Black soul food tradition, which is indigenious to North Louisiana and other Southern states.
It completely baffles me why local proprietors do not adhere to three basic rules: select one Louisiana culinary culture, keep the menu short and simple, and be absolutely obsessive about authentic preparation and flavor as it is produced in Louisiana.
As it now stands, Nawlins will never survive the Colorado Springs "five year rule;" namely, the place will be out of business in 60 months or less.

We stopped in this afternoon. The prices were more than fair as anyone who has ever eaten cajun cooking in the southeast would know. Most sandwiches and po'boys were $8.99 and you could choose whichever side you wanted to go with them. The food was delicious, arrived quickly, and the service was excellent. The waitress placed silverware wrapped in cloth napkins on the table when she seated us. Drinks were on the table within three minutes and the waitress quickly returned with a basket with a half dozen bottles of condiments. Our food was out in less than 10 minutes. The portions were large and were served on heavy earthenware dishes.

A "Diamond" in this truly rough Colorado Springs culinary scene. Chef Davis has manage to bring to this city something long needed and looked for. Southern/Cajun cuisine and the atmosphere/feel of dining in the French Quarter. My first experience at Springs Orleans, I almost forgot what city I was in for a bit, which is not a bad thing every once in a while. A wonderful place for a 3-4 course meal, or suits just as well for Beignets and Cafe Au Lait. If you happen to catch the musical talents of Thomas Dawson (Pianist for the Commodores usually there Thurs-Sat nights) the experience is taken to a whole other level. A wonderful dining experience.

I guess they must have gotten rid of whomever served you, Unhappy, because my experience was great! In response to questions about why certain items are sometimes missing from the menu: This restaurant orders the seafood portion of their menu directly from New Orleans, not local fish farms etc. Therefore they only get what's in season, nothing frozen so say Alligator isn't in season or the season is unsuccessful for something like crawfish, they won't have it readily available... a drawback, maybe, but this is also insuring that you get the freshest seafood available...

The Alligator Bites were inconsistent. They were different sizes (All were very small), some had more breading than others and some were chewy. They were greasy and had a very bland taste. I also got a bowl of the Chicken & Smoked Sausage Gumbo and was shocked that it contained 90% rice & only 10% Gumbo. It only had 5 small pieces of meat in it. Rice was not at all mentioned in the description on their menu (Online or in-store). I was shocked they charged me $5.99 for a bowl of rice! If you have to do this to your Customers than you need to close the restaurant. I felt the product was not worth the money at all and I was deceived. I will NEVER eat at Culpepper's again!!!

in response to gregnomics & unhappy: Unhappy was totally justified. I was a server for 27 years ( the last 10 at the 5 star 5 diamond level). TIPS are earned they are not a given. TIPS is an acronym for the following: To Insure Proper Service, originating in an ad campaign from some time around the 1930's . The server in question is a disgrace to our profession & were she my employee she would be fired. It is unconscionable that she would ignore her guests, partially disrobe in their presence and chase them down the street. She is obviously in the wrong line of work. A server's job is to serve their guests... to literally be their servant while they are enjoying your establishment. If you do not have the proper attitude of servitude, and graciousness then get out. You will never make the high income of a professional server & you're an offense to the company you represent & the profession you obviosly have no respect for.

No offense Unhappy, but it is socially unacceptable to not tip a server in the US. Servers must give a portion of their tips to the hostess, bartender, busboy, etc. On top of that, their salaries are usually around $3 an hour, as it is assumed by employers and the law that customers will provide tips.
When you don't tip, the server is literally losing money while they work.

Something must have happened in the kitchen - Our late November visit was nothing like the 4 star one earlier in the year. Thy muffy was not so great, several items were gone from the menu... what happened?

Last night, December 20,2010, I met my family at Nawlins for a birthday dinner. First, the waitress's stomach was showing, then while standing right next to my 9 year old sister, she lifts her shirt to her boobs to fix it and pull it back down.
Everything we needed had to be requested from napkins to silverware to spoons to refills. The waitress would look at us and totally blow us off when we tried to get her attention! So, we didn't tip her.
She comes charging out of the restaraunt telling us "Don't F@&#ing come back!" and charging up the sidewalk. When we reported this to the only other employee, he too starts yelling at us and threatened to call security because we didn't tip her.
If you want dinner, at $100, terrible service, and horrible people, then eat there, otherwise don't bother.

We met friends at Nawlins on a Saturday night 6 pm. Service was pretty slow, and food was less than stellar. Had the catfish - it was soso. It was served on plastic plates, and was a little spicy - but needed much more spice. This was not what I was expecting from a place touting Cajun cooking. Our party tried to be polite - but jokes started to come out about the slow service and iffy food. A bit pricey for what you got. Drinks were a fair price and well made. If you are looking for a bar that serves food - it meets the criteria. If you are looking for a restaurant experience - you'll need to pass on this one.
The saving grace in my opinion is the live music. The rest of our party left by about 7:30, and my wife and I sat on the patio till about 10 - 10:30 listening to Rick Stahl - a talented local artist. He brings the rating to 2 stars (1.5 for him).

This place is awful! Awful food, service, and the prices are way to high in comparision to the food portions. I ordered the fried catfish and shrimp I got half a piece of soggy catfish and six shrimp that were extremely overcooked. My fiance ordered the boudin link w/ french fries his food was cold The waiter had an attitude when my fiance told him his link was cold The waiter took the link back to the kitchen then emerged back to our table 15 minutes later with the same old link. I asked the waiter did hush puppies come with my meal he shrugged his shoulders then came back to our table with a small bowl full of cold hush puppies by this time we were so over the whole nawlins experience and asked to speak with a manager. We were told there wasn't a manager and there was no one we could speak with concerning the poor service we received, really! We were laughed at by the staff and treated as though we'd done something wrong. Bottom line I will NEVER patrionize this establishment again!
