Re: “AFA football coach uses tweets to evangelize

Whether it's a gov't owned account or not is irrelevant. He's an employee of the Academy (through the Athletic Dept) and he's using the USAFA "Brand" on his site. He identifies as a representative of the Academy, a coach, and a RECRUITER of cadets--and therein lies the rub. There's no issue with his religious beliefs--he's free to believe and practice as he sees fit. I defend that right every day. BUT, where he goes off the (legal) reservation is by proclaiming his faith on a site that he SIMULTANEOUSLY uses to represent and serve the Academy. He should and could have a separate Lebotsky account that's just for him and has no tie to USAFA (or claim to his job) where he can write all of the stuff he wants--and ISN'T followed by recruits or cadets.
Let's look at a couple of examples... If a leader (and he is one as a coach) at USAFA, on their team site or even a site that linked them with USAFA proclaimed that 'Religion is the Opiate of the Masses' and USAFA and the military spend WAY too much money on sky fairy fantasies (e.g., the Chapel and its impending $multi-million renovation) when their real mission is to educate cadets to be rational, critically thinking leaders of our Air Force, then that leader would be instantly called onto the carpet by leadership for this affront and insult to religious members of the USAFA community. It would give the impression that USAFA is hostile to religion--that would be wrong and bad. The same could be said if a dept head or AOC, on their own site with 2500 followers and USAFA branding said that the one true path was to serve Allah and not man. That would give the impression to that officer's subordinates that they might not be treated fairly, nor would recruits be welcome, if they didn't fell like that commander. In Steed's case, it's reasonable to assume that he might not be an effective recruiter of someone who isn't an overt, evangelical Christian since I'm sure his recruits are encouraged to "follow" his Twitter feed. If I was an atheist or Muslim recruit, I'd certainly look elsewhere.

This really isn't that hard. 99% of the military deals with it every day successfully. At work, it's about the mission and your job. If you represent your work, you keep your religion, politics, and sexual preference private--they don't belong at work. If you want to express political or religious views, you do so outside of work, in a manner that would not lead a reasonable person to think that you are endorsing those views and that the organization you represent REQUIRES or ENDORSES those views at the expense of other. Steed can have his own religious page, but he CAN'T do it as a representative of USAFA. He doesn't get it, his bosses don't get it and haven't taught him that, so they should all be disciplined for the damage they've caused.

Re: “AFA football coach uses tweets to evangelize

Are you sure this is a government-owned Twitter account? It seems to be his personal account. The article seems to skirt around this issue with innuendo.

If it is indeed his personal account then trying to shut him down goes against the spirit of his constitutional right to free speech. Surely this publication is all for free speech.

Re: “Unlicensed vehicles are the norm on streets near The Broadmoor, tickets aren't

Tannim- When you are stopped by police ask them! I know if a person is cash poor and their license plates expire they then are charged another $100 when they finally register it. A fine for poverty. No moey? Then pay more. Billionaire? Forget it, (wink wink). For a police spokesperson to say they do not know if a vehicle is illegal must not have been on the force when Harley owners were being stopped so police could inspect exhaust pipes for the fine print stamped into the underside of the pipe for the EPA legal seal of approval. What department was it that switched their Harley's pipes back to factory from aftermarket pipes and who paid for it?
So drive without those permission papers and then go to jail and wait in there for trial to find out if you are going to go to jail. This is the same society that makes "community service" a punishment instead of a good deed. The same town that makes you sit in your car to warm it up before heading out on a cold morning- totally misunderstanding the entire concept of "warming up". They say it can be stolen if you do not sit in it. Well yes it can and that is called 'carjacking' and it is the police departments job to stop crime. Whoops sorry, I forgot, their job to investigate crime. . . I have seen police cars sitting empty and engine running so why can we not do the same? Same reason some believe police and police only should have firearms to protect themselves... If your neighbor was drunk and fired a few rounds off into the ground and you then came out and shot him fatally in the back all the while he never even knew you were on the other side of the wooden fence hiding would you be charged with anything? Would an officer if he did the same thing?
Permission slips to drive on roads you paid for but the roads never have any maintenance because the money you paid, it's... it's ... well it was somewhere in the budget but it disappeared, several millions gone, gone where? I dunno, oh well, let's vote and raise taxes because everyone wants to give up hard earned pay right? Doug Bruce is in jail so he cannot stop that measure from passing. BUT, If you do not pay tax then you need no permission to drive on roads that tax dollars are never spent on. (The burns in your car seat? Dropped your joint you were smoking creating Pot Holes... I digress I guess)
The Broadmoor contributes millions to the coughers I mean coffers and the rest is chump change from the lower-downs who golf on the no-smoking links but their car does a pot-hole-in-one everyday. Let's trade everything to The Broadmoor! I get dibs on a suite and one of them trucks that haul ass!

The old Christian war phrase was "praise the Lord and pass the ammunition" This bible thumper tight end coach seems to have changed it to "praise the Lord and pass me the ball".

Re: “The Trump presidency, deplorables, the media, and more

Hey Rocky, Congress was supposed to control the President but FDR started shifting that power and it kept shifting. Congress then turned its attention toward campaign donors, not you or anyone else. Those with a lack of understanding of The Constitution and the adherence to it is what fails us all. Billary's people are blaming everything, everyone and missing the real culprit: her.
Ron Lowe Nevada City, California? WTF are you writing to this town for? Worn out your welcome there? I will be happy to talk with you about anything when you arrive here, that is if you can get that "older people" phrase out with your tongue still in your mouth otherwise you will sit and listen and you will learn-the hard way if you wish. Sorry about your children that you explain the world to. Not.
Gina! Hire new writers- "for-profit media are responsible for this, and will not report it as such". Care to qualify that statement? Try, I dare you. Then follow up with your sister's racist remark and what sort of people your parents were besides failures at raising children with brains. Detroit huh? Cheap housing and city council is all in jail, police response time is never and fireman must bring water from home because of______________?

Re: “UPATE: Did dinosaurs and humans co-exist? Flier at USAFA says yes.

Through graduation from New England prep schools and an Ivy League college (and graduate school), I had never been exposed to the scientific evidence for creation nor the scientific problems with evolution. I now resent having been brainwashed and if you are fortunate to stumble upon such a newspaper full of scientific, archaeological and historical facts, you might be grateful to learn the truth and not fear it and react like a spoiled teenager. Check out Answersingenesis.org or ICR.org. There is a good reason why so many PhD scientists are creationists. ~ NSW

Re: “AFA football coach uses tweets to evangelize

It's hard to know how to respond to this latest affront the the Constitution, the 3rd in 48 hours, from the evidently 'converted' institution formerly known as the United States Air Force Academy, but now more properly the 'Holy Blood of the Lamb School of Sacred Airborne Imperialist Aggression' [a fully taxpayer funded parochial university of Christian fundamentalist dogma and applied military skills]. This most recent affront; evangelizing via a government-sponsored Twitter account by someone who cannot be anything less than intimately aware of the long history of Constitutional violations that have cropped up repeatedly, like a bad case of hemorrhoids, from within the very department in which he works and who occupies a position in the hierarchy in which he should not only be aware of AF directive 1-1 but who should be responsible to insuring it is carried out, cannot be anything less that a supervisor-approved, intentional act of sedition against the Constitution the former AFA is specifically empowered to defend and protect (if I understand correctly, as a civilian, he's not been required to swear such an oath). In his arrogant contempt for the regulations, he doesn't even bother to use a private, non-governmental Twitter account. That would spoil the intent, don't you see?

That as an employee of a government entity, utilizing a government-funded means of communication for proselytizing his personal religious beliefs conflates them to be official government policy in violation of the Constitution's 'Establishment Clause' is unarguable.

Those who colonized this country were fleeing state-mandated religious beliefs in order to freely practice what they believed (let's disregard the genocide & religious dictatorship they themselves practiced upon arrival). When our founders decided to write a constitution laying out the core beliefs of the new nation, they specifically understood that a monolithic state religion was anathema to democracy and led only to religious wars (of which Europe provided aplenty) and therefore specifically forbade it in the document we all now revere. But, those lessons, under the pressure of a few dogmatic and unrelenting fanatics, are destroying the secular democracy endowed to us by the founders and the framework for a new Christofascist theocracy is being laid.

Where's the outrage?

Re: “UPATE: Did dinosaurs and humans co-exist? Flier at USAFA says yes.

Stop it. Just don't publish such an absurd story and call it news. It's insane to think there was proselytizing going on here by leaving one religious publication in a waiting area that can be populated by anyone, further, if you don't like the message, then don't read it. Easy peasy. Hide it under the other magazines if you so desire, but don't cry wolf on something so ridiculous.

Re: “UPATE: Did dinosaurs and humans co-exist? Flier at USAFA says yes.

Never heard of the discovery news before (and it doesn't sound like anything I would read) however if you truly believe that a magazine left in a waiting room indicates endorsement than you are an idiot. If you are worried that an academy cadet would be brainwashed because he sat next to a religious publication, then we should be concerned about the quality of recruits. Separation of church and state does not require that government facilities and employees be completely devoid of religion or any spec of personal religious material then you have no idea about the Constitution. I shouldn't have wasted my time reading this post, it is as devoid of fact and truth as the magazine they are crying about.

Re: “UPATE: Did dinosaurs and humans co-exist? Flier at USAFA says yes.

While it may be thought unreasonable to criticize the clinic staff for the single instance of the anti-science 'Discovery Institute's' fundamentalist Christian agitprop being present (perhaps some 'outside agitator' had just put it there) the functional part of the victim's complaint is "... previously on two appointments I had ignored Christian proselytizing materials found there...". In other words, this is an habitual occurrence; hence the clinic staff and, more importantly, their supervisors should have been aware of this repetitive 'attack' on the government clinic's Constitutional requirement to not 'establish' a preferred religion and should have taken the necessary steps (e.g.; posting a sign like 'Please leave no unauthorized material' or more aggressive measures) to insure that its patrons are not confronted with religious proselytizing in a circumstance suggesting it is official U.S. government dogma... one can only imagine the uproar had the document be a Qu'ran! Sadly, however, such tacit endorsement of a 'state religion', dominionist Christianity, has become the rule rather than the exception at AFA. Happily, Mikey & MRFF are johnny-on-the-spot to hold the proper feet to the fire.
