I think it's pretty clear that the mayor wants as much power as he can grab, which does not portend well for the citizens, the little guy. He runs with the big dogs, so it's appropriate that council throw up some obstacles. That's called democracy and sometimes it's messy.
I have to say that if an in-house counsel/attorney is not liked, that usually means he/she is doing the job they were hired to do. Mr. Melcher is a very competent counselor/attorney. COS is lucky to have him. And if you think he gets paid too much, just do the math. He gets paid around $90/hour. That is way under the going rate for an attorney which is usually around $250, but can go much higher depending on the services. Mr. Melcher is not the problem. Just for the record, I am not a friend of the city attorney and have only met him a few times. I am just using common sense. So, lets stop pointing fingers and start working together. People, Council & Mr. Mayor!
Didnt a Senator who didnt listen to the voters and got too big in his britches just get recalled? Why does everyone think its ok for the Mayor of Colorado Springs to have all the power? Good for City Council fighting back. They all got elected to look out for us, not to bend over for Bach. I heard The City Attorney was too liked at Colorado College. Too many old people in this town trying to run everything, and a small group of wanabees trying to follow in their footsteps. New and younger politicians please apply now.
Now that's almost as good a piece of writing as your more snickery self. Maybe better. Perhaps even a whole lot better. Now work on getting your readers to shed a tear or two, and you too can become Erma Bombeck.
Love this song OldCrank. La la la la la. The words are haunting.
Mr. Reilly is spot-on with his comments. The ACA is a great step forward.
Red state hatred of Obama is rooted in the South's perpetual family value: Racism.

Ah.....see Rich has a sensitive side. :)
Nice writing and made me reflect about where time has gone. Seems like lately that is all I have been doing. It creeps up on you when you least expect it. Father Time and Mother Nature are both alive and well in Colorado. Be well.
From the ASPCA:
Why the Bad Rap?
Sadly, the pit bull has acquired a reputation as an unpredictable and dangerous menace. His intimidating appearance has made him attractive to people looking for a macho status symbol, and this popularity has encouraged unscrupulous breeders to produce puppies without maintaining the pit bull’s typical good nature with people. To make matters worse, irresponsible owners interested in presenting a tough image often encourage their pit bulls to behave aggressively. If a pit bull does bite, he’s far more likely to inflict serious injuries than most other breeds, simply because of his size and strength. A pit bull bite is also far more likely to draw media attention. Many dogs of other breeds bite people, but these incidents almost always go unreported. They’re just not exciting enough fodder for television and print.
Despite this bad rap, a well-bred, well-socialized and well-trained pit bull is one of the most delightful, intelligent and gentle dogs imaginable. It is truly a shame that the media continues to portray such a warped image of this beautiful, loyal and affectionate breed. Pit bulls once enjoyed a wonderful reputation. Some of the most famous dogs in American history were pit bulls. A pit bull named Stubby, a decorated hero during World War One, earned several medals and was even honored at the White House. During duty, he warned soldiers of gas attacks, found wounded men in need of help and listened for oncoming artillery rounds. Pit bulls have been featured in well-known advertising campaigns for companies such as Levis, Buster Brown Shoes and Wells Fargo. The image of a pit bull, which was considered a symbol of unflagging bravery and reliability, represented the United States on recruiting and propaganda posters during World War One. Many famous figures, including Helen Keller, President Theodore Roosevelt, General George Patton, President Woodrow Wilson, Fred Astaire and Humphrey Bogart, shared their lives and homes with pit bulls.
Modern pit bulls can still be ambassadors for their breed. Some are registered therapy dogs and spend time visiting hospitals and nursing homes. Some work in search-and-rescue. Tahoe, Cheyenne and Dakota, three search-and-rescue pit bulls from Sacramento, California, worked tirelessly at the World Trade Center during the aftermath of 9/11. Others, like Popsicle, an accomplished U.S. customs dog, work in narcotics and explosives detection. Still others serve as protection or sentry dogs for the police. The majority are cherished family members. Pit bulls become very attached to their people, and most love nothing better than cuddling on the couch or sleeping in bed with their pet parents (preferably under the covers)!
Should this guy have had a gun?
Robert W.... littering?
John B..... YAWN!
Rich T.....keep on writing, I have been a fan for years!
"So I walk into Starbucks the other day with a 9mm Glock handgun in a holster, sawed-off shotgun in my right hand, old Soviet Union AK-47 in my left hand, 16,000 rounds of ammunition on belts slung over my shoulders and a couple of hand grenades around my neck."
The sawed off shotgun will likely land you in federal prison for 15 years for illegal making and possession of an NFA Title II firearm. The old Soviet Union AK-47 will also likely land you in the federal pokey for another 10 years as an NFA Title II firearm unless you went through a lengthy process to be approved. The hand grenades also would likely land you a lengthy stay in federal prison for unlawful possession of destructive devices if real and even if fake are a violation of Colorado state law. I believe you are now looking at approximately 30 years behind bars, possibly more. The 16,000 rounds (sic) of ammunition for the AK would weigh about 580 pounds -- so good luck with that.
"You know, just in case one of them crazy Second 'Mendment NRA gun nuts takes some time off from recalling state senators and bursts in while I'm gulping my latte."
Are you really that scared of people peacefully exercising their rights and powers to participate in government and for redress of grievances?
Dear Mr Tosches,
Honestly, all your lengthy diatribe accomplished was to paint a very poor picture of yourself and of those who are apoplectic when they see a firearm in public or hear the letters N R A, and unless that was you goal, it was not funny, insightful, or informative.
Instead of engaging in grade school belittling and bigoted stereotyping, you would do well to learn a little more about the group of people you seem to enjoy insulting. If you did, you would find that a great many of us are well spoken, educated, come from good families, and have good paying white collar jobs. We don't stereotype you as a granola eating, Subaru driving, Birkenstock wearing, tree hugger as we know that trying to put people into boxes despicable and almost always incorrect -- some of us like granola and drive Subarus too. The fact that we own firearms and even legally carry them does not mean we live in trailer parks, wear greasy tee-shirts with the arms ripped off, have a couch in our front yard, kick dogs, beat women, need dental work, dropped out of high school, live on welfare, or any of the dozens of others of ignorant stereotypes you seem so fascinated with.
I appreciate these "independent" high minded articles. Great to have a news source that is not interjecting personal political opinions or degrading fellow citizens with negative stereotypes. Well done journalists. FYI, if you do want to talk about scary machines that go boom, sweet 10 speeds or how to perfectly fold the cuffs of your jeans, you can setup a personal Facebook, Twitter or Google Plus account. Spew your ignorance on various topics there.
They were probably not worried about anything. They were probably just out grabbing some lunch. And demonstrating to the nervous nellies and hoplophobes that there is nothing to be nervous or scared about. People need to be far more worried about getting killed in a car crash on their way to/from lunch than about the person open carrying in the sandwich shop.
"Mentally ill HAVE RIGHTS TO. You want to blame the mentally ill. Ill agree it takes a nut to shoot up a bunch of other people. But how do you separate the Mental from the rest without background checks? "
Holmes is mentally ill and passed four background checks. Loughner is mentally ill and passed a background check. Alexis was mentally ill and passed a background check.
It is almost impossible for the police to prove a background check was not done.
You may not like that we keep saying the same things over and over again, but the truth is YOU HAVE NOT REFUTED US.
"The only reason these laws are unenforceable is because politics has caused them NOT to be enforced. "
WRONG! There is a difference between isn't being enforced and can't be enforced. The universal background check CAN'T be enforced.
"YOU GOT ANY BETTER IDEAS?"
Several: 1) Provide a better education for people. 2) Improve our economics [the economy is the number one factor in our levels of violence]. 3) Teach ethics. 4) De-glorify violence and revenge. 5) Improve our mental health system and work to remove mental health stigmas. 6) Punish the wrong doer.
I assume that Rocky is speaking to me and displaying HIS lack of comprehension. Iknowhuh is littering this section with the same disability and even more so. If you refuse to protect yourself and your family then it sucks to be you. I would say that the refusal of family members to ignore the symptoms of paranoid schizophrenia in their midst and take no action, not even locking up their firearms is the core of the rotten apple. So when the patient loses all touch with reality and displays more and more violent tendencies the lack of knowledge by the family and friends turn their backs. There is reason number one for being armed. That police are never around and are not obligated to intervene until the shooting stops. Aggressive medical treatment is the first better idea. Acute paranoid schizophrenia must be seen for what it is and confined to hospital and being treated is my second better idea. So a mass shooting is now perhaps stopped before the fact. Why is this so hard for some to understand? Because they want gun confiscation, no ifs and or buts. There are plenty of us level headed people around who are armed. We do not settle arguments with firearms. Gun control I will tell you again DOES NOT WORK! Do not suggest that it does. Banning capacities will finally end up with with single shot weapons. Just who is going to or has been protecting me? I do. The fact that there are numerous people carrying ought to make you feel safer. These people know what they are doing and if I hear "wild west" one more time then I will say good luck to you and try to duck. The Earp brothers and others like them were schemers who became marshals simply to get pay-offs and kick-backs. The had laws of no firearms for anyone in town. They were thieves and killers and they were the police. The ATF is a corrupt violent gang and along with the FBI trigger happy snipers they violate Rights, falsify evidence and use entrapment to conduct there business. Another reason to stay armed. Liberals have an aversion to Freedom since the days they lived in communes. The top hippie bought land and invited everyone to live together in peace and give their money to the top hippie. He paid for the land and members all drifted away.
You made other erroneous comments such as "like yourself"that sell firearms to anyone and I don;t give a crud about the "village". Wrong on the first one but I am beginning to tire of the shallow minds here. I am pleased with the recall of those two which you all think was silly. That shows how little you understand about anything. I do not want clueless citizens playing their selfish games with my life and my Freedom to protect myself. Drop your children off and speed off to your selfish destination. You are not going to create utopia or succeed in changing The Constitution. That is a fact. Build your houses in forests and at the bottom of narrow canyons and you know what will happen eventually don't you? But you build anyway. Just not enough clear thinking here is there?
Open carry in Colorado. I was in Subway on Centennial the other day. Two young 20's men came in with glocks/holsters strapped on. They were appropriately dressed: jeans, t-shirts, colorful tattoos, etc. I wonder if they were worried about me or some other patron disturbing their lunches.
I read the Indy nearly every week and sometimes enjoy Rich's sarcasm...not the case this week.
Mr. Schultz is fully within his rights to respectfully request that people not carry guns into his stores. I will certainly comply by not entering his stores. In my opinion all this does is provide yet another zone that is safe for criminals where the criminal can expect an unarmed group of people. In fact, this seems to be to be one of the the silliest ways to try to make a point or to create any sort of gun-free zone.
Unlike many who are complaining about this request I do not believe that this is any sort of infringement on my rights. It is an exercise of his right to do what he wishes with his private property.
Unfortunately, Mr Schultz along with many many others do not seem to realize that the place for concern is with the bad guys that do not respect the law or honor requests like this. Good guys comply…bad guys don't…this makes no one safer.
I now have a definitive reason to avoid another global chain and take my business to a local vendor. Adios Venti triple skinny latte…I have just turned my starbucks card into 5 guitar picks…
I got to jump in on this simply because again theres two guys running there mouths saying the same thing we have heard over and over. Mentally ill HAVE RIGHTS TO. You want to blame the mentally ill. Ill agree it takes a nut to shoot up a bunch of other people. But how do you separate the Mental from the rest without background checks? You have a problem with others thinking of the Village you say they cant think for themselves. Well guess what OTHERS do live on this rock and have rights just like you and its the Governments job is to think of all of us when it comes to safety and laws not just you. The only reason these laws are unenforceable is because politics has caused them NOT to be enforced. If they would get off there butts and do there job then the laws for background checks that were in place before would have been effective and there wouldnt have been a need for these so called feel good laws and then we wouldnt have had to spend money on a feel good recall. NOW WOULD WE? Ban guns and then only the criminals would have guns. Ok but you do realize that the guns the gang bangers and criminals have come from. They steal them or buy them from folks that dont give a crud about the Village you know the ones much like yourself that would sell a firearm to anyone with cash because the 2nd amendment said I can. Heres a big one. READY? YOU GOT ANY BETTER IDEAS? How do you keep guns from the nut cases and allow you your rights to have one without taking rights from others? Come on step up speak up you got anything? As far as this "free newspaper" that you seem to think is not important let me remind you as to why. It gives another view point to the rubbish that is paid for by the other paper so people have a choice and can think for themselves not just get crammed by one view but get to read others view so they can make up there own minds. Scary huh? There are others out here that dont need the Gazette or Fox to tell them how to think.
