Re: “Viewing civil unions from the pulpit

What other sideline churches in Colorado Springs will be doing these blessings?

Re: “Chemical reactions in downtown Colorado Springs

There are contaminated sites all over this city. Doesn't anyone worry about the dust that blows off of "Gold Hill Mesa" into Old Colorado City? Our city's children are breathing that.... Or that our newest hospital is built on top of a landfill?

Re: “Chemical reactions in downtown Colorado Springs

I would not take children to America the Beautiful Park to play in the playground based on the test results for the one soil sample we took there. There are definitely carcinogens in the soil . I personally observed many clouds of dust spewing into the park during the demolition project.

Re: “Chemical reactions in downtown Colorado Springs

Hey what do you call 1000 (city) lawyers at the bottom of the sea? A good start. Kat and Don should keep digital recorders on their person at all times. Anytime a city official comes by, hit record.

Re: “Chemical reactions in downtown Colorado Springs

CapitalistPig, Last we checked, the city still owes Utilities $3.3 million for this property. At one point in the past, the city wanted Utilities to simply take the property back, but as far as we know, Utilities didn't do that. We'll check further. Thanks for the question.

Re: “Chemical reactions in downtown Colorado Springs

Pam: Please investigate the purchase and payment for these propertties. The City did not pay for these "purchases" and utilities did not foreclose on them. I think Utilities wrote off the money owed as bad debt. The result is that the natural gas utility customers are paying for these properties in their utility bills. Yes, we are subsidizing the U.S. Olympic building through our utility bills. It would be interesting to know how much the City did not pay and impact that is having on our utility bills. This is a worthy article!

Re: “Chemical reactions in downtown Colorado Springs

Yet the same city holds local organizations and businesses to the hardest and most stringent standards, inspections, fees, and fines that make doing business nearly impossible.

Every venture looks to city officials like more money for bonuses and big severance packages for themselves. It is one big money grab for those blessed with election and employment into the city brotherhood.

Re: “Chemical reactions in downtown Colorado Springs

To be clear, we want readers to know that testing of samples from inside the Trestle Building did not detect any suspicious substances connected to the demolition site. The test results on dirt from the outside of the building, however, showed carcinogens were present. Those areas have since been covered with mulch and dirt, as advised by the testing company.

Re: “Chemical reactions in downtown Colorado Springs

Courtney, Kat Tudor and Don Goede did have samples taken from American the Beautiful Park. Many contaminants were not detected, but some were, although at miniscule levels. As Tom Antonson says, though, these substances aren't safe at any level.

After our deadline, we received the city's response to our question on this, which said: "The City does not have plans to test the soil at America the Beautiful Park in relation to the project at 25 Cimino. Multiple environmental studies were performed on the ATB property in the late 1990s and early 2000s, prior to it becoming a park."

What the city's response doesn't address, however, is the possibility that the recent demolition project might have resulted in some particles escaping the demolition site.

Re: “Chemical reactions in downtown Colorado Springs

Has there been any testing at America the Beautiful Park? That would be really nice to know since contamination there affects thousands and thousands of our city's residents, including, most importantly, our city's children.

Somehow, I'm not really surprised at this response from the city.

Re: “Guitar Legend Johnny Smith Alive and Well in Colorado Springs

In 1956 as a junior in high school, a college combo at Oklahoma State headed by Ashley Alexander, jr. asked if I would like to try out for his band as guitarist. Somehow I made the cut and mostly played rhythm guitar as Ashley played bone, sax, trumpet and a little bit of everything else that made a sound. We played all over Oklahoma, Northern Texas, Dallas, Amarillo, Kansas, Arkansas and maybe a time or two in New Mexico. Mind you, these were Friday and Saturday night gigs. At the time, traveling late at night, WWL radio out of New Orleans broadcast a jazz program "Moon-glow with Martin" from the Ambassador Hotel. The station reached just about every where we were and would fight off sleep listening to those great selections Martin would play. In 1957 or 58, coming in from somewhere in Texas we first heard Johnny Smith. It was the greatest musical impact ever on my life. I was only 15 or 16, but I made intensive efforts to learn some of the things Johnny did. The first 2 things I worked on was "Ghost of a Chance" and "Moon Light in Vt. The impeccable tone and voicing I heard made chills run up my spine. I'm 74 now and Johnny is still my favorite and most appreciated guitarist of ALL TIME. For the past several years I have made a few jazz archtops using the D'Leco logo. I love guitar and I dearly love Johnny Smith, the greatest guitarist EVER. Thank you, James Dale, Oklahoma City, OK.

Re: “The Mathis family fights a first-grade battle close to home

These sorts of tragedies should not be public displays, but handled professionally and quietly.

To make it a public scandal sends up all sorts of other flags about this family and simply puts on display a level dysfunction that needs privacy and calm, not media attention and hysteria.

Re: “The Mathis family fights a first-grade battle close to home

I agree! The Mathis family is very loving, accepting and supporting. I commend them for not only accepting Coy for who she is but also sticking up for what's right. Coy deserves to be treated as an equal among her fellow students, not suppressed just because of a rare difference that doesn't harm anybody else.

I've been in contact with Kathryn, myself (on facebook), and I've told her of my own gender issues and how Coy's story has been an inspiration for me. She's very understanding, and I'm happy to have her as a facebook friend. :)

Re: “Lilly Ledbetter says her bill is just the beginning

It's convenient to forget that women care for children more than men - meaning more time off due to sickness, school issues, etc.

Re: “Transhuman express

And I think we will be introducing non-biological processes into our brain. And according to the Law of Accelerating Returns, that non-biological component of our thinking is gonna grow exponentially. So if you look e-papierosy ahead to, let's say, the 2040s, it's gonna predominate. And so we will be mostly non-biological at that point. But that doesn't mean we're a different person, because we've maintained the continuity of identity all through the process.

Lilly visiting us is a gift of knowledge and energy. She reminds us to talk about the things that matter, whatever side they are on, and to encourage each other to make life better.

THanks Pikes Peak Women for working to bring her here and thanks Kirsten for covering it.
