Donna Drialo! Explain to me what "fracking" is please.
Cyrus Campbell! I agree with you 100%. I do not believe there was ever a time we had 100% employment in this country. If a business wishes to leave a bowl for change that OTHERS donate to or OTHERS may take from then that is fine. Snide messages do not belong on that bowl and was undoubtedly placed there by the business.
As for their advice, I believe then I will get a job. I will take over the manager's position at The Perk. (Would he be The Jerk at the Perk?) The Perk can reach me through this forum. I have never been to The Perk and have no idea what The Perk does but I know how to treat people plus have management skills and training going back to 1975.
New York Lawyers have a saying: "If you have the facts, argue the facts; if you don't have the facts, argue the merits; and if you don't have the facts or the merits, argue like hell!" Mr. Publish, you are arguing like hell.
In refusing to attend the State of the Union address, Lamborn signaled to the entire world, including our mortal enemies, that we are not united as a nation, deep divisions exist that they might be able to exploit. This betrayal is what you applaud as Lamborn's courage.
Finally, Dave, the community response was to exercise their constitutional rights of assembly and free speech to draw attention to their situation. The police response to the lawful and peaceful demonstrations amounted to a riot against the community, and against the media, who dared exercise their constitutional right to cover the story. When police attack demonstrators, instead of defending their right to demonstrate, they create an environment that fosters violence. Once the state police stepped in the violence subsided dramatically.
Unfortunately, Dave, young Black males are targeted by racist profiling, and whatever the statistics you are citing here, they are compiled from the records of the "justice" system that victimized them in the first place.
It is a self-justifying policy: we assume young Black males are more prone to be criminals, so we target them for arrest; arrest records then show more young Black males in prison, proving they are more prone to be criminals.
Furthermore, the "educational, economical, ethical, familial, and social circumstances" you deplore are not the causes, but the end results of the same problem: social injustice based on race.
Dave, your first two points are both beside the point. Regardless of whether or not the officer who killed Michael Brown is charged or not, regardless of whether he is convicted or not, this case has already exposed the lingering social injustice in America.
Of the eight British soldiers who were charged with murder after the Boston Massacre, six were acquitted and two were convicted of the lesser charge of manslaughter. Nevertheless, the Boston Massacre still stands for all time as an emblem of social injustice.
1) We still do not know all the details regarding why Brown was shot. You are assuming it was a bad shooting.
2) A person does not have to be armed to present enough of a threat to justify shooting. All they have to do is present a perceived threat of death or serious bodily harm.
In fact, from 2008 thru 2012, the yearly average was 778 people murdered by attackers without weapons (FBI). Thousands more were seriously injured.
3) Unfortunately, young black males have a higher tendency to be involved in criminal activity, especially in violent crimes. This is not because of the color of their skin, but rather because of their educational, economical, ethical, familial, and social circumstances.
Regardless of all of this, the community response of rioting, violence, vandalism, and looting was completely unacceptable.
Old Crank - Lamborn is NOT the worst ever. He does NOT deserve to be booted out of office.
What difference does it make that he didn't attend? The speech was almost exactly the same as the one given before. Why honor the liar that is Obama by showing up? Why waste your time? It took courage for him to do so and I applaud his action. Did you even listen to the speech?
And as far as the tar baby comment, he did not say Obama was one - go back and read the EXACT WORDS and you will see where you are wrong. WRONG! Hurts doesn't it to know you can't read correctly?
and the ACA should be repealed. Obama lied about most every provision in it including you can keep your doctors, hospitals and the premiums will drop 2500 a year. LIES all of them. Are you getting a subsidy from us taxpayers? Is that why YOU like it?
The bills in the House contain such onerous restrictions on our freedoms that I am delighted they are being held there . But to both groups, I say a pox on their heads as they are NOT doing their jobs. The ACA was pushed through against the majority of Americans who did NOT Want it. NOW next year premiums are going up 7.5%!! what happened to the "affordable" part of it?
TINY URL: this link doesn't exist. Guess why?
Now tell me how you think there is a war on women huh? You repeat talking points with NO PROOF. Do you even know what a fact is? If so, post your war on women facts. we are waiting to hear them.
The only one who has a war on women is Obama who pays his women staffers less than his men. Now who has a war on women?
OldCrank: To say Colorado has the BEST economy in the nation whether true or not and disregarding the source, would be better phrased as "sucks less than the rest of the nation".
As for depression of the mind and Robin Williams it is true that there is a stigma and that others do not want to deal with it. Imagine if all illnesses were treated as such. Williams was truly gifted but his performances were often textbook displays of manic behavior. A "reporter" calling him a "coward" exemplifies the state of journalism today. That reporter is a coward and truly ignorant which does qualify him/her for a job in media. Suicide is the sincerest form of self-criticism and takes courage along with debilitating depression to even entertain ending the only life you have. I do not mean feeling "low" but full-on depression. When you have it you know it and there is not many things that can be worse.
Long live The Fisher King.
And Hickenlooper is just another modern day politico where lies abound and self-importance is all one needs to be elected. And cash. Like Mayor Bach he too wears an imaginary crown and feels the citizens are not worthy of being considered while entertaining grandiose images of themselves for all to see. They do not see that we can see them as the arrogant fools they are, but feel we see them as they see themselves in a mirror.
Lamborn is the worst ever. He deserves to be booted out of office. In my lifetime I've never seen anyone in Congress willingly avoid a SOTU speech, except Lamborn, who also used the term tar baby in conjunction with out president. He's a disgrace to us all.
The bills sitting in Reid's inbox contain poisonous provisions, like repealing the ACA, and as such were sent up by Boehner who knows full well they'll never see the light of day in the Senate. By the same token, there are bills in Boehner's inbox that are not acceptable to the GOP, like the Senate's version of an immigration reform bill that Boehner won't bring up for a vote.
Meanwhile, Hickenlooper has presided over Colorado's business in a fine manner. Just the other day it was reported that Colorado has the BEST economy in the nation. Here, read the links:
http://tinyurl.com/o8vvltq and http://tinyurl.com/pplvn76
BTW: It's spelled GARDNER and he most certainly is part of the war on women.
Everything written by "publisher" is a lie, but that's normal these days for the GOP/TEA.
Gary Casimir - Lamborn has done many things for the Springs that you do not want to recognize. Shame on you. In addition, with Harry Reid in the Senate refusing to take up the 350 bills waiting for the senate to debate and sign, nothing is getting done in Washington.
To citizens of the Springs - Vote anything but Democratic in 2014. Throw out Hickenlooper who is a total waste of a governor - he lost jobs and tax revenue, over rode the will of the citizens in getting a killer removed from society, and he generally has been ineffective in getting anything significant done for the state. Udall is just as bad. He never answers letters with anything but another form letter, he has his phony war on women nonsense and he has not brought home the bacon for Colorado - like Reid has done for Vegas. He also LIES like Hickenlooper.
Consider another party such as the GOP or TEA PARTY and vote for Beauprez and Gardener in 2014.
I was summarizing a report I heard some time ago on National Public Radio, although I do admit to guessing as to which of the two Anglo-French terms was more Anglo and which more French. So, I looked them up on Webster's Online Dictionary, but it is not very helpful. The bottom line being that "assault" may be the more Anglo term and "battery" the more French, or Norman, term.
I suspect the legal definition of assault as an attempt or a threat derives from many years of litigation working to refine and pin down the definition. The top non-legal definition of assault is "a violent physical or verbal attack"--but that again is the leading modern definition, not necessarily what it meant when the phrase "assault and battery" was first introduced into legal proceedings.
Which only means I cannot prove the thesis I heard on the radio independently, but I believe the report was reasonably well researched and documented. If the two words were roughly equivalent at the time of their first use, then there would be no reason for the repetition except perhaps to clarify the charges to speakers of different dialects.
"What did they do; pick up every stone and pebble on the roadway between Nazareth and Bethlehem? I can't imagine just what this collection is comprised of." -- Nancy Lieber-Lazzaro
Then you don't know much about the history of Christianity. Perhaps you are assuming that by "artifacts" they are referring to things specifically and directly involving Jesus, his family, and the 12 Apostles. Artifacts can be ancient or modern -- say, Mother Theresa's head scarf, a note signed by a Pope, a sliver of wood purported to be from Noah's Ark,
Not sure where you got your definitions, but "assault" is the threat or attempt to do violence; whereas battery is the actual causing of harm. Both come from Anglo-French roots, with assault coming from the Latin "to leap" and battery meaning "to beat".
I do not know how the legal terms have changed over the centuries, but legal phrases such as "assault and battery" and "breaking and entering" etc. have their origins in England after the Norman conquest. The courts normally dealt with both Normans, who spoke French, and the English, who spoke Anglo-Saxon. The word "assault" was the French equivalent of the English word "battery". Both words were used so that there would be no question of anyone not understanding the charges against him.
If modern jurisprudence is now making some sort of distinction between the two, then we have gone very far afield from the original intent.
Police are under no obligation to protect any one person. The Supreme Court states "duty to provide public services is owed to the public at large, and, absent a special relationship between the police and an individual, no specific legal duty exists." Attorney's for New York City stated in a case "There’s a long-standing legal precedent requiring cops to put the public safety of all ahead of any one individual’s rights."
You probably have no memory of a police officer saving a citizen from being murdered. It is not their job. Police are there enforce laws not protect individuals. The show of weapons is to impress upon the children what they will face if they break the law.
Police are now paramilitary organizations. Wikipedia defines it as: "A paramilitary is a militarized force or other organization whose organizational structure, training, subculture, and (often) function are similar to those of a professional military, but which is not considered part of a state's formal armed forces."
This will explain the black helmets, face-coverings, fatigue jackets and pants down to combat-style boots. In every officer/citizen encounter the cop expects to make an arrest and is also prepared to summon back-up officers. This is why one should never talk to police or make any sudden motions. Police ask questions only so as to enable you to incriminate yourself. A sudden motion will usually cause the officer to pull his weapon and fire. Always be courteous and quiet. When they think someone is showing respect for the badge, it is, in reality, actually a fear of the gun. If you have a firearm or even a box of ammo on the seat of your car when you are stopped for a traffic infraction and the cop sees it you will be in a choke-hold or worse in an instant.
The days of the cop on the beat are over. Today, they stay in their vehicles, windows up and can access info in an instant with communications devices connected to databases nationwide. SWAT utilizes automatic rifles and explosives not to mention armored vehicles plus numerous other military grade equipment. They are isolated from citizens and are directed to wage War on Drugs, handguns, DUI and criminal gangs/ organizations. Citizens are secondary concerns. It is up to you to defend your life and your family's lives.
There are so many laws now that nobody has ever or will ever be able to read them all. Each citizen in America breaks 3 laws a day without even knowing it. That does not include the court's freedom and willingness to interpret any law they wish plus they use language that has legal definitions apart from ordinary meanings. When you hear "assault" weapons you think you know what "assault means. You hear "Assault and battery" and think that someone was assaulted i.e. punched, stabbed etc. But "Assault and battery" is the combination of two violent crimes: assault (the threat of violence) and battery (physical violence). Of course this legal distinction exists only in jurisdictions that distinguish assault as threatened violence rather than actual violence!
"Protect and Serve" is a long dead slogan that meant nothing in as much you won't see it anywhere but in old movies. A better slogan on police cars would be "We Are Not What You Think".
Read this Jan, http://nypost.com/2013/01/27/city-says-cop…
"What a shameful abuse of the police's role in our community — to serve and protect"
Jan, they are "serving", by educating the populace--including children--about their role in the community, and what do you think they use to "protect" us all; unicorn horns and dragon-claws?
So, Bob, you and 8 others support the idea of "flushing" the "dookey team"?
Seriously? This is the pinnacle of all your supposedly superior liberal intellect and rhetorical prowess?
It apparently is; remain juvenile...
Harley, I suppose you ostensibly represent the profound and "enlightened" portion of the electorate? Stay classy!
