Re: “Black History Month, campus attacks and fracking questions

"How sick are these people?" --- good question Rodney and how sick are the people that continue to vote for them? Our country is facing disaster for the first time in its history (Cuban missile crisis notwithstanding). As long as people vote for their self-gratification instead of the health of the country, we will continue down the road to destruction. We may already be at the point of no return and folks continue to glorify the likes of Obama, Reed and Pelosi.

Re: “Letters: Obama's ideas, gun violence and fracking

To Ms. Gertrude Nuhn: I would like to expand for you your own thought process (as I interpret it) on what Americans need and don't need since you "understand the meaning of The Second Amendment" yet contradict your own statements. I ask you what do you need all those locks you have for? Your home is not Fort Knox, it is just a space for your stuff and it is not important is it? You question why an American citizen would want or need something more than a deer rifle. Why then would we want or need a police force or an army? You describe "military-style assault rifles and weapons with high ammunition capacity" as "guns are neither meant for hunting nor for self-defense" and finish with "their only purpose is to kill many people in a short amount of time". A weapon that you say "not meant for self-defense but only meant to kill many people" leads me to believe you are quite confused as to what self-defense involves. Self-defense can easily involve killing and lack of self-defense could easily involve dying!
What is a "military style assault weapon"? I have heard that phrase often but nobody can say definitively. I have my grandfathers deer rifle. It is a 30.06 bolt action which was at the time the same weapon design used in World War I. Grandpa bought it new in 1929. It was made by Remington Arms and they used the term "sporterized", meaning it was a sleeker looking rifle than the military issue. It was his "deer rifle" or one of them anyway. The 30.06 caliber is a high-power round and I have taken elk easily with it at 300 yards. The 30.06 is about four times more powerful than the AR-15 which many are complaining about now and say we don't need because of the military assault looking style thing. So my heirloom rifle is on the list of anti-gun folks "take aways" because it is "military style"? Sorry Gertrude, nobody will take grandpa's rifle away from me. Nobody.
Confused? Still? I am trying to expand so bear with me...
The Second Amendment that you claim to understand states simply the Right of The People Shall Not Be Infringed yet you are asking for our Rights to be infringed! How is that deemed at all to be "understanding" while I have pointed out your first mis-understanding that you did not catch. Now we have another...
I don't know if you drive or own a car but let's say you do. Why? Does it have locks? Do you lock it? Why? Does the military have a car? Your car can probably go 80 miles per hour. That is dangerous and you don't need that. So why not ride a bicycle or walk? If it snows I am sure the police will pick up groceries for you but they don't need cars either do they?
So now I am as confused as you! I don't know what we need or don't need. We need maybe one person in charge to tell us all and we all will obey that person and that person will live forever so all people can be told what they need because Thomas Jefferson was wrong about being inherently free. Jefferson did not have you, Gertrude there to tell him what to write in the Constitution and The Bill of Rights were not necessary were they? Because being inherently free and being The People is no the way Gertrude understands it or wants it or needs it.
I do know that for one group of people to be granted the power of life and death over others based on what they think while those others are denied any power or thought is sheer lunacy at the very least and it should scare the hell out of you. Based on your confusion you most likely will be on the "denied" list yet this is exactly how you envision "freedom".

By the way this is not Syria and you do not have a clue about the Constitution. The Bill of Rights granted us the Right to keep and bear arms and if we stick with the premise of those Rights and the Constitution the likelihood of using those arms is diminished greatly. Anti-gun activists predictions have always been wrong, their facts are lies and their definitions false. They are why we need arms in the first place. They are not going to get them. Ever. End of confusion. Have a nice day!

Re: “Letters: Colorado Springs dining, Palmer High School, dogs on leashes

Since the woman has to bear and raise the child, it should be a woman's health issue because it is such an important PERSONAL decision and we should leave all religion out of our civil laws! If a woman doesn't believe in abortion, then she won't have one, but your religion should not govern my body just as I don't expect you to live by my beliefs! (Another great example is the fact that stem cell research is now legal and many medical achievements have been made, now that religion has been taken out of the equasion.)

And since it takes a man and a woman to have an accidental pregnancy, then we should make stronger laws to hold the man just as responsible as the woman. Why aren't Men held more socially responsible with the birth control aspects of sex instead of blaming the woman in this sernio?

And maybe the penalty for incest and rape should be much harsher on the man, so let's get biblical and castrate such men who commit such crimes!

But in the end it is this unplanned and unwanted child that will suffer and the taxpayers that will have to pay in the end anyway.

Re: “Letters: Colorado Springs dining, Palmer High School, dogs on leashes

tech: Really, "...most Americans agree on some level of reasonableness..."? I'm under the impression that this (abortion) is a contentious, black and white issue, with few giving any quarter. I am also under the impression that people actually vote for president on this issue alone.
I certainly hope you are correct, tech. There are too many more important issues facing this country. I also appreciate your measured position on the issue.
Anyone from the left want to comment?

Re: “Letters: Colorado Springs dining, Palmer High School, dogs on leashes

Sig...actually most Americans agree on some level of reasonableness along the lines you articulate.

It is abortion for birth control as in the morning after pill that offends us...and why should Obama mandate that we all participate in the atrocity...let those who need it pay for it, not mandate it to be free and subsidized by tax payers or those buying health insurance.

This is a direct attempt to receive some sort of official approval from that which is wrong, and make the rest of go along.

Re: “Letters: Colorado Springs dining, Palmer High School, dogs on leashes

tech and soul: just out of curiosity, would you each agree on limited abortion? Say, 1st trimester - woman's choice; 2nd trimester - extremely limited; 3rd trimester - only imminent death of mother.
Soul - your war argument is a bit thin. No one likes war. (Personally, I don't believe there has been a legitimate war since WWII.) Soul, What are your thoughts on WWII? Would you have simply given the world to Hitler?
As to subsidies to big oil and GE, tell Obama to stop it. He won't listen to me.
Re: personal subsidies. I don't think taxes should pay for abortions, birth control pills or little blue pills.
Last item: Soul, why are you forced to fund anything outside of taxes? If you are referring to taxes, then why did you vote for the big tax and spender?

What could a bigger atrocity than murdering babies? Abortion takes a helpless life and extinguishes it for the convenience of someone's choice and you think that is okay?

You and your celebrate diversity crowd are the rot of civilization!

Re: “Letters: Colorado Springs dining, Palmer High School, dogs on leashes

TejonTech-
I find war "morally objectionable" yet my tax money pays for them. I find giving profitable companies like Exxon and GE tax credits/subsidies "morally objectionable" yet I am forced to fund them with my hard-earned money. I feel viciously violated having my money used to fund the atrocities perpetuated by a few in our military in our name. I do not think that a women's choice about when to have a child is your or anyone's business. As for who pays for it....I pay into the insuance pool for men to have their little blue pills so they can go out and impregnate more women. Let's stop the men from doing their thing first, that will stop the abortion problem!

Re: “Letters: Colorado Springs dining, Palmer High School, dogs on leashes

I would disagree that birth control be denied, although Roman Catholics may not...but I do think abortive pills, morning after medicines than negate conception, should be paid for by the persons wanting the abortion, not the rest of us who feel violated having our money used to fund something we find morally objectionable. The county employees make enough to pay for their own mistakes, not tag them on the taxpayers tab.

Re: “Letters: HUD housing, global warming, mental health

Wasson closure will affect all of D11

Those of you who live in School District Eleven and thought the Closure of Wasson only affected “those Wasson” students are in for a very rude awakening. The entire high school boundary has been re-drawn and guess what? You thought your 8th grader was going to Palmer, well guess again. They may be going to Coronado now. The same goes for EVERY high school in district eleven. Going to Doherty? Guess again, you may be going to Mitchell or Coronado now. The turmoil that the School District Eleven School Board has unleashed upon the district has only just begun. Big brother goes to Palmer and little brother wants to follow? Too bad. Little brother, now has to go to a different high school because of the school board actions. Choicing between schools will be VERY DIFFICULT because the board just transferred 950 students across the 4 remaining high schools. Palmer and Doherty, already at or near full capacity, will be especially hard hit. If you don’t live in Palmer or Doherty new boundry areas, the chances are you choicing there will be virtually zero. Extreme turmoil is only starting for District Eleven. If you live along the boundry of Distict Eleven and have the capacity to go to an out of district high school, go for it! Out of district means lots of room and class sizes under 40 students per room.

golly indylover, are there any other parts of the US constitution that should be "rendered null and void" because they don't fit your political perspective?

Re: “Letters: HUD housing, global warming, mental health

Interesting point, Emil. I would also say that when we as a country opted for a standing national military instead of a citizen militia, that the intent of the Second Amendment was rendered null and void. The gun lobby has re-interpreted it to promote the sale of firearms with too often disastrous results. Maybe it should be a responsibility of the military-grade gun owner that, if you want that freedom, then you owe it to everyone to put your zest for firearms into defending this country. Like the saying goes, "freedom isn't free".

Mikala: what is "important to understand is this: at any given time, there will be a place on this earth that is too hot or too cold or too wet or too dry or to stormy or too calm. You can pick any one of them to attempt to support whatever agenda you would like.

Re: “Letters: Obama's ideas, gun violence and fracking

fliz: Obama's idea of creating jobs is to hire government workers which, by definition, further increases an already grossly bloated federal government and of course to fill the unions. You can not honestly tell me that sounds like a prudent solution. Mr. Obama has proven himself an enemy of private enterprise which, in case you didn't know, is where real jobs originate and flourish. The fact that Obama and his sycophants blame the GOP controlled House, does not mean the House is opposed to fixing the problems with this country. In fact, it appears to me they are attempting to prevent its demise.
As to the deficit you so easily dismiss, do you have any concept at all how much 16 1/2 trillion dollars is (let alone the over 20 trillion that we will be burdened with by the time Obama is through)?

Re: “Letters: Obama's ideas, gun violence and fracking

Siggie - it is not President Obama who continues to ignore all of the jobs bills he's proposed - it's the house of representatives.
they have refused to even vote on the American Jobs Act, they have refused to work with the President on getting Vets back to work, they have refused to work on an infrastructure bill etc.

these are things our counry needs, not just to employ people now - but to also improve our country.

The deficit problem will, for the most part take care of itself if we start employing people.

To me, it seems silly to worry about the deficit and it's impact on our future generations if we are not taking care of the present generation growing up. How much are these kids going to care about whether or not there is a deficit in 20 years if they spend their childhood in dire straights and our country has fallen apart because we, our generation, couldn't bother to keep up with repairs and improvements?

and yeah, green energy may not be perfect - but then, neither are our choices now - coal and oil are not going to last forever - we need to start finding a replacement now.

and look into history and all of the oil drilling companies that went out of business in late 1800's and early 1900's. things do not always work at first, but we have to keep trying, how else will we get where we need to be?
