Re: “More on fatal crash involving El Paso County GOP chairman

Modern vehicle bodies dent VERY easily. And honestly, a dent like that does not take very much force at all. To say "with such speed" falsely implies he was moving very fast. Pretty shoddy reporting. But, since we know Pam's political slant, this is to be expected.

What Trevor Dierdorff was doing was perfectly legal. What Mel Tolbert was doing was illegal. Had Mr Tolbert followed the law, Mr Dierdorff would not have hit him. Any charges filed against Mr Dierdorff were only due to the collision, which again, had Mr Tolbert followed the law would not have happened, while Mr Dierdorff was following the law. And that is why the charges were dropped.

Re: “4/20 in the Springs was chill, same can't be said of Denver

It's a stupid event that should be done away with! If people can't behave like decent adults, then stop rewarding them with this inane celebration. Their childish behavior gave Denver a black eye, and a lot of filth. When are we going to stop pandering to these people?

Gotta go to Boulder to see a good show. There are TWO shows over in Grand Junction at a nice winery we've been to, might be worth the trip. But no shows here. Sad.

Re: “Reader: Who cares how much taxes Trump paid!

It's not "did he pay taxes" it's what they reveal about his conflicts of interest and potential monetary gain from his unique position to influence legislation and EOs that will directly benefit him.
The party that has railed about transparency and accountability for years now seems to see nothing wrong with their candidate who refuses to live up to that stance.
We heard GOP talking heads rant on and on about all the Obama vacations, yet nothing with the extravagant amount spent by Trump for his numerous weekend getaways to his for-profit resort.
Trump is not going to "fix the country" for anyone not holding giant financial portfolios. If you think he gives one ounce of thought toward the plight or life of middle/poor America, you are sadly mistaken.
He has DECADES of history of his corrupt ways including not paying contractors, hiring foreign workers (because he can pay them less than he would have to pay Americans) and various other shady things.
I applaud you for your faith, but I also wish you would take a moment to ask yourself if you would be just as supportive of the EXACT SAME actions and lack of transparency by any other person in that office.
(and let me guess, there will be a "Hillary!" "Obummer!" reply...)

Sounds like there has been some behind the scenes dealing going on here. All the more reason to look for someone outside this area.

Re: “Reader: Who cares how much taxes Trump paid!

People here are making a lot of assumptions that Trump doesn't pay taxes, like any successful business person he pays what he is legally obligated to. If you don't like it, change the laws. Rachael Maddow tried to make sensationalist news by revealing one year of his taxes returns that ended up showing he did indeed pay his fair share at a higher tax rate than most in his income bracket. Maybe the people here don't do their own taxes or even pay taxes because you would know if you did that there is no real information that would be revealed in a tax return. The financial statements that Trump has disclosed reveals a much broader and more pertinent scope of information. Trump supporters are obviously the Winners, and because of them everyone will end up benefiting from a new approach in our federal government that will finally be for the people, not the career politicians. People need to quit forming opinions based on 10-second news clips on the evening news and start listening to the facts, you will be amazed.

Re: “City for Champions hits snags, generates controversy

"The study also reported the stadium and arena would cost $74 million to build. State RTA money would provide $14.35 million, operating income revenue bonds could add another $10.7 million, and local incremental tax money, $21 million, the study said. That leaves a $28 million funding gap."

It's deceptive to the core and frankly a lie for Suthers to say the shortfall is only $28 million. First of all, the plan approved by the State puts the cost at $93 million. Even if the cost went down since 2013 (very unlikely as construction costs have skyrocketed), the 21 million in "local incremental tax money" is also taxes collected as City sales and property tax and then diverted from the general fund that pays for things like public safety, roads, stormwater and parks. And that's all in today's dollars--add the cost of financing planned for C4C (a factor of 2.38) and we're up to $117 million in payments made by local taxpayer dollars on top of the $27 million in state taxpayer dollars that should be funding things like widening I25.

Keep your eyes open, Colorado Springs--your duping and double cross radar should be on full gain and pointed toward City Hall and the City Administration Building and Tejon Street. The City hasn't officially cancelled the stadium project with the State and still has an obligatory agreement to build one unless they do so.

Re: “Reader: Who cares how much taxes Trump paid!

One other thing Jack if those folks that are not paying taxes to finance a war are selfish and anti American. Where does guys like Trump fit in? Hes got millions and is not paying so in your mind does that make our President anti American?

Re: “Reader: Who cares how much taxes Trump paid!

Hear is my take. For years we have heard about the low income folk not paying taxes. They get all those services for nothing. Remember? Horrible people taking advantage of the Government and the honest taxpayer. Yet here is a very wealthy person doing the same thing only with millions and while running for the highest office in this land called it smart to do exactly the same only 20 times larger. Dont you think its just a bit of a double standard not to hold him accountable?

Re: “City for Champions hits snags, generates controversy

In addition to using taxpayer dollars to pay for the bridge, tax dollars will also be needed to build the parking garage adjacent to the Olympic museum, a garage that will lie under Jenkin's proposed skyscraper condo building. Giving developers tax dollars to help them build condos and whatever in urban renewal areas, tax dollars that are in addition to paying millions for infrastructure for their developments are, regardless if it's legal, a misappropriation of public funds. Using tax dollars for economic development results inevitably in needing to raise taxes to pay for roads, parks, fire and police, etc, since the dollars intended for these vital govt functions was given to the developers. A truly visionary developer will find a way to make his dream schemes happen without fleecing the citizens, many of whom have no interest in living in or "revitalizing" downtown.

Re: “Reader: Who cares how much taxes Trump paid!

the grabber in chief is a con artist scammer and always has been. he will screw over anybody and everybody to make a buck. he has been sued for this countless times... he just settled a $25 million dollar scam for his fake university. he has a long history of screwing the little guys on his big projects then sicking his big law firms on them so he can pay them less than they agreed on. why anyone would trust this scumbag is beyond me. show me the tax returns and then we can judge why he is giving so many tax breaks to the rich and greedy. if he and much of his family doesn't end up in prison our system is badly broken.

We care Jack. We have a liar in chief , a twit who twitters , and you say "fix my country" , he is destroying it bit by bit. Looks like we are headed for another useless unneeded war. About to give his family and cabinet members a $9billion dollar tax break just on the death tax alone. All he has done is promote family interests/businesses since he's been in. Jack you are a Trump supporter = LOSER !!

Re: “Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo Foundation plans overhaul of Norris-Penrose Event Center

Recognizing that not everything in the world is somehow connected to The Broadmoor Land Swap of 2016, one cannot help but see an interesting thread buried in this article. If the right of first refusal (a title restriction) can be undone in this case, what does that say about the highly-touted, iron-clad right-of-first-refusal which was placed on Strawberry Fields?
The inclusion of that title restriction was used by both the city and the Broadmoor to reassure the public and help sell
their deal. Just sayin' .........

Re: “More on fatal crash involving El Paso County GOP chairman

It doesn't take a lot of force to dent the bodywork of a newer model vehicle. I doubt the velocity of the SUV would be considered excessive enough to be described as "such speed". That being said, Trevor Dierdorff was certainly at fault, and "careless" would be an excellent description of his actions leading to the accident.

Re: “UPDATE: Cleanup costs for Colorado Springs downtown land: $4.4 million

To be clear, Richard Skorman wasn't rude and didn't "shout down" this person or anyone. He allowed her the full amount of time allowed anyone else and then told her she was mistaken in some of the comments she made. The video is available on the city's website if you'd like to view it and make your own judgment.

Re: “Gazette reportedly lays off newsroom employees

Ms. Zubek:

I know some other former Gazette employees, dedicated professionals, who have left the paper. None that I have run into regret their decisions.

I'm sure your decision to leave the Gazette was a difficult one, but your contributions to the Independent and to journalism in this city justifies the change. We benefit weekly from your writing; I doubt you would have been able to do the same at the Gazette.

So...thanks. Your work is much appreciated.

Re: “Olympic Museum and ... what else in southwest downtown?

NOTHING will work well, if at all, either downtown or anywhere else, until we get rid of TABOR. As long as it's in effect this city will be a dump and planning is just a dream state.

It seems the main reason for building all this stuff downtown is because the local in-crowd of big-money movers and shakers own the land down there, i.e., the Mayor's up to his eyeballs in crony capitalism for his GOP financiers.

Better to distribute these attractions around town to spread out the traffic hassles since there's no money for roads or transit thanks to TABOR. Let Gray LIne run tourist buses between the attractions like they do in "major" cities for the tourist trade.

The USAF has at least $100B in annual tax dollars and thus no shortage of money to rehab their existing stadium or build a new one - where it's currently located, not downtown. Stop pimping downtown.

Build mid-rise or taller residential towers downtown so people can finally have a walkable city instead of having to drive to everything. Downtown is parking constrained, you can't get near Jack Quinn's or other eateries and shopping without fighting the hassle of parking.

Build residential towers and put a major supermarket on the ground floor of one and you'll revitalize the downtown. If you want to see how it works, just take a junket to Crystal City, VA, right across the freeway from National Airport. I know, I lived there, worked there, used the subway stop in the basement and WALKED to everything.

Re: “Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo Foundation plans overhaul of Norris-Penrose Event Center

Went to the rodeo ONE time. In 2005. All was fine until it was over and the event turned into an evangelical sermon. If I want a sermon I'll go to church. Never went back to this place. Never will.

I do hope they improve the facility. The one time we went a storm came up and the unpaved parking lot became a dust storm with all the wind. Dreadful. Nothing like a 3rd world experience in the world's only superpower. If that's the best we can do then sell it to China and let them invest it.
