does the Springs have more news, or just mroe POT ads?
What an awesome tribute Ralph! Best of luck to John and Carrie too!
dp72. You could be no more spot on! I witnessed myself what you have laid down here. Saturday nights at the Hungry Farmer were filled with hippies, cowboys, business folk; we all got along. The developers and the xtian right indeed have separated us.
Side note. Where are Mr. Ed and his legions of T-gops Brucers now that we see who they truly are? ENOUGH!
Repeal TABOR immediately, vote in Mary Lou. Let's get moving again.
This town took a hard right turn when the Sun shut down. This was not considered a substantially more conservative City than Fort Collins or Pueblo until 87-92 when our news became monotone, and our politicians started wooing megachurches and evangelical activists, and developers were handed thousands of acres of new land to build crappy houses on. The aggressive takeover and shuttering of the Sun allowed the 'Freedom' Newspapers' propagandists to take advantage of a largely transient military population to pull the wool over the local's eyes and make decisions that the Sun would have brought to light and debated (and lambasted). The decision to woo religious organizations from other states like Focus on the Family (Orange County, Ca) and pastors like Ted Haggart (Baton Rouge, La) changed this town from a live and let live community with tolerance for all shapes and sizes to one of hate and ignorance. The Lotus Eater boutique was a LGBT owned business that flourished downtown for many years. They and the many new age booksellers were picketed and harassed by our new influx of hateful transplants. The decision to annex Banning Louis Ranch was made at this time as well. A decision that set a course for unsustainable eastward expansion and an explosion of capital infrastructure costs right at the same time that our local paper championed Doug Bruce and his TABOR fiasco. All of this Citiy's primary issues can be traced directly to the closing of the Sun and the inability for people of reason to contrast the propaganda of the Gazette. You may have been happy to be at the Gazette at the time Ralph, but it was a terrible time for our city.
I think I learned everything I need to know about pot when I saw "Reefer Madness" a few weeks ago. Maybe the Gazette got its talking points from that play.
It's gone more strident than that Enormously Egoed Reactionary Sean Paige? Doubtful.
Excellent. I know that The Gazette thinks, "But hey! Others who agree with us in the first place are toats linking!" But that seems to be where the thinking on its part and its audience's part ends.
Yes, we know the author of the Gazette's propaganda, Christine Tatum, as a prohibitionist shill for the drug treatment industry -- her husband is anti-cannabis crusader Christian Thurstone.
Three years later... good riddance to Bach. He is not running for Mayor again because he cannot win, due to his own actions and words. There is justice after all. :)
I've lived in the Pikes Peak region for 39 years, most of that a homeowner in Manitou. Manitou bleeds its economic strength to Colorado Springs, meaning I can't buy a new car or tire in Manitou. All of those sales go to Colorado Springs, I can't buy a board of wood or a screw for my home in Manitou, I can't buy a computer...stereo....TV....washing machine.....Cell phone...Men's suit.....a pair of shoes or sneakers.......NADA. I can't even buy a new bicycle in Manitou - all of those sales tax dollars get bled off to Colorado Springs. Well the retail Marijuana store can reverse that trend with a $100,000 / month contribution to our city's sales tax coffers. That is humongous folks an absolute huge percentage of the city budget to come from ONE STORE !!! That's $1.2 million/year to the city from one trouble-free store. Our city budget is only $12-13 million per year and this harmless industry can help our town a lot. It's time to stop the inaccurate fear mongering and look at the economic FACTS ! PROVEN ACCURATE FACTS !
Yep. Justin Armour just lost all of my money. I'll never eat there again.
Those opposing 2G are numerous and determined as well and are voting.
The fear based campaign against retail MJ sales has failed to win many new recruits. None of their fears have come true. In fact their prime assertion "Manitou has made huge improvements the past decade .... This will reverse if families choose not to visit the area because of retail marijuana..." is the exact opposite of what has happened. August and September were record breaking months for tourism, crime has been reduced, business revenues are up, sales tax revenues are at record breaking levels (even without counting MJ taxes). The only problem we might have is a parking problem since so many people want to come to our interesting diverse alive community. Manitou is moving forward rather than retreating to the failed policies of the last century.
boycott these intolerant people's business's like the Crystal Park Cantina
keep Manitou weird!
Vote no on 2G. Simply because the people against recreational marijuana are using manipulative techniques. Kari Kilroy should resign from her County Board position for using KKTV because she is personally involved in the ballot issue. Kilroy and Dr. Ken Linn fabricated a concern claiming an increase of student use at Manitou High School. Do not be manipulated by the big money of the Republican party that is running 'don't go to pot' campaigns in several States with marijuana ballot issues.
Dare I mention that the town clerk retired on May 30th and the town office has been staffed for a few hours each Monday morning since then? Good luck to anyone who might need to transact town business.
With Mayor Worthey's re-election, the long-time public works director and several part-time public works employees resigned; the long-time town clerk and her long-time assistant retired; two town trustees resigned; two planning commissioners resigned; the former town police chief (who had resigned) was rehired. The new town hall was financed through a grant obtained by the previous town council. Mayor Worthey nearly didn't sign the agreement with the town hall contractor at the last meeting of the previous town council until the majority of that council declared they would legally act without her participation.
Mayor Bach could learn a few things from the GMF mayor.
"Let's not put all our chickens in one basket."
Moreover, let's not wait until the eggs come home to roost.
We need ONE government for all of El Paso County, not the busload we now have.
We need ONE school board for all of El Paso County, not the 15-20 we now have.
We need ONE tax rate for all of El Paso County, not the mishmash we now have.
Am I the only one tired of PAYING for all the duplications and byzantine schemings?
So, you didn't get to see the lake(s)? I mention Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station in Strike Three, my post-apocalyptic novel, and I am curious...
Simply put the Sheriff wrote on his website that parents are wholly responsible for their children in the real world. He asks, then tells why CJC is overcrowded. Overcrowded due to lack of parental responsibility here in El Paso County. Trouble in the teen years that is not corrected is a downward spiral in adulthood. Then he wrote about citizen's Rights under The Second Amendment. He supports our Rights and that was his "big mistake". The Indy then does all it can to smear him (that is, as long as it doesn't take print space away from the all-important marijuana pages. In my many years I have seen the children of marijuana users and the results). The Sheriff also spoke out about the absurdity of parents who refuse to have their children be protected by firearms ( http://www.epcsheriff.com/school-safety-co… )
One commenter even has alluded to suspicion of involvement in a murder.
In short: The Indy advocates and promotes drug use, cries for bans on weapons Rights then laments a perception of "public safety" being jeopardized because of what some allege the Sheriff is doing wrong. The Sheriff is not at fault for all your problems folks... Look in your mirror.
And Ralph, can you lose the insipid, arcane and erroneous "Wild West" scenarios that so many embrace as THE bad example? Colorado Springs was not even remotely connected to the settling of the West. There is no Old West history here other than this is where Tuberculosis patients ("lungers") traveled to try and get well or die trying. They could barely stand let alone stand in the street for a Hollywood style bullshit "gunfight".
