I can't believe I am going to defend Joe Paterno. You cant place the two examples used in this article as some sort of "from my experiences it doesn't surprise me he enabled Sandusky"
This guy was there for 60 years and coach for more than 40. Jesus himself wouldn't last that long in any profession without be an occasional asshole and pissing someone off. The above described examples are almost to be expected but in no way can you draw a line from that to enabling Sandusky.
Paterno should be condemned for his role in the entire Sandusky tragedy but
if you are going to go with the "I saw this coming" you need more than what you've given us
Is it really shocking that all the Penn State lunatics are responding?
"The errors in the Freeh report...BLAH BLAH BLAH".
We shouldn't expect more from Penn State fans. They enabled Paterno and his culture as much as Paterno enabled Sandusky.
I'm just glad they got to witness the destuction of their demi-god, and watching the statue being carted off to the garbage bin was a glorious thing.
hmm, any other quotes from people who are dead? Did I miss stories about these incidents involving Paterno at the time they were to have taken place or is it only after the main character and all witnesses are dead that the writer screws up the courage to go to print. While a great deal of blame can and has been placed at the feet of Paterno with respect to the Sandusky crimes let us not turn a blind eye to the press which also failed in it's duty to report. Are we to believe that numerous reporters never heard whispers of Sandusky's behavior? If they did not then they are poor excuses for reporters, if they did hear and did nothing then they too are part of the cover up. It is easy to pile stones on the grave of a dead man.
These Penn St'ers are ugly ugly people. The venom and bile in some of these posts is amazing. (by the way, please please stop calling Penn St a top academic institution- it's ranked 6th in its own state people)
PSU Football = Death Spiral
5 decommits-in another four months, the entire class will have decommited.
Sure, the BoT could sue to have the sanctions reversed, then the NCAA goes for the FOUR year death penalty. Game over.
These baseless lawsuits keep the bad name of Ped State in the headlines but will have no bearing due to lack of privity. The nation is appalled at the criminal conspiracy enabling the rape of little boys. Coach Accessory After the Fact is in Dante's Seventh Circle.
That is the reality. You Joepologists just don't get it. No one likes you.
Wow you've been holding a grudge since the 70s. Time to let it go.
Amazing that someone could write such a story and not discuss the extraordinary discrepancies in the Freeh report. Just accepts it as fact, even when so clearly parts of it are manipulated, illogical opinions. The writer had his feelings hurt by Paterno 30 years ago, so Paterno must have been a child sex abuse enabler. Makes perfect sense! Then he quotes Matt Paknis, whose bizarre assessments of PSU/Paterno were cited by many in the media in November - and not supported by anyone else since! No one has supported Paknis' assertions, despite railing on Paterno being the popular thing to do. This writer is a pathetic, sad loser
This article is a bunch of crap. I am sure plenty people loved and hated Joe Paterno. All this judgmental hate purged by this "reporter" is obviously an editorial and should be viewed as one. This does a lot of good. So keep it up dumbass
The auther would be better served reading the Freeh report. The conclusions do not seem to relate to a report that absolves Paterno of any wrong doing. First, the report shows that Paterno forced Sandusky into retiring prior to the first report of abuse in 1998. Additionally, Paterno argued against Sandusky being permitted to bring kids onto campus, but was overuled in Sandusky's retirement agreement. The report also shows that PSU did not influence the police investigation in 1998, which found no evidence of wrong doing. Finally, regarding the 2001 report, which Paterno related to his boss and the head of PSU police, the report shows that the AD, after speaking with Paterno, decided on his own to stick with a course of action that the AD recommended prior to speaking with Paterno. All these facts are contained in the Freeh report.
Great story, these Pedd State defenders are incredible. NO ONE is jealous of Penn State, not now, not then, not ever...Get over yourselves. Paterno was a scum bag and you people were the last ones to realize it. Some of you haven't. very sad.
Whatever his ideas were for athletics and education must have worked. Look at the success of both. Look for surprises in the court cases yet to come. Glad some reporters are sticking up for him since he can no longer stick up for himself.
Wow. Maybe you should stick to writing about jazz musicians. Oh wait. No one read that article.
Any idiot can pull up comments from unhappy people and shade a story any way they want as with this one. Nobody has ever claimed Joe Paterno was a saint, not even the man himself. But if you want to line up people on the other side, you will find that there are many more who have had great and positive expereinces with Joe Paterno. Generally it is the media who have had issues with Paterno, because he wouldn't give them the sound bites they wanted. RIP Joe the media continues to dog you to this day...IDIOTS
Another person from the media who refuses to read and fully digest the Freeh report and wants nothing more than to tear down a person who rose to the top.
You had to go back to 1970 to relate to something negative? WOW!! You really do hate the Paternos and PSU!
Maybe you should be reporting on the weather (at least that would be current).
Uh. Wrong again jackass! He wasn't a single part of it! Once again, a weak attempt to tear down perfection! Have a nice life in your mediocre media job , loser! Lol
Best word for joe paterno and penn state haters; JEALOUS LOSERS.
"Carpenter has won the Pikes Peak Marathon an amazing 12 times, including the past six years" and that doesn't even touch Imogene! Carpenter rules. The stuff that legends are born from. What comes is just tribute to the definition of Mountain Runner. Long Live Carpenter!
I was in Arkansas when the decision to fire Petrino came down. I was surprised, given their lust for a championship team. Jeff Long, the University of Arkansas and the people of Arkansas showed a lot of class.
