Re: “Suthers is in the mayor's race

It's a shame this town didn't elect former councilman & co-mayor Richard Skorman instead of another inadequate Republican candidate.

Re: “See him run

Supreme Court says corporations can be people which seriously implies that people can be corporations. If corporations are composed of many people, then so can marriage be a corporation of multiple people if all of them sign-on to the binding contract. Bring on plural marriage. Hip Hip Hooray! Thank you Supreme Court!

I wonder how social conservatives like the Supreme Court now that its "corporations are people" ruling has essentially destroyed the 1-man 1-woman concept of marriage. It's about time we got religion out of the marriage contract for those who so choose.

Re: “Lathen declares for mayor

Someone please refresh my she one of the pols who got re-elected to a 3rd term on the basis of some weasel-worded term limits item on the ballot a few years ago? If she is one of those tricksters, we need to oppose her with all due vigor.

I also noticed that Anti-Gay groups like Focus on the Family haven't said a word about laws on adultery being taken off of the books in Colorado in the past year, or laws on bigamy now being challenged:…

Re: “Lathen declares for mayor

If Amy Lathen is elected mayor she'll be paid 77% of the current mayor's salary. Wasn't that written into the city charter?

Will she have trouble asking for federal disaster dollars if Colorado Springs needs the money? Will she have trouble taking federal grant money to build the entertainment facility downtown?

Will she get behind the push to build the 19,000 affordable housing units this community sorely needs? What will she do to remove Colorado Springs/El Paso county from the #1 position of child poverty in the state?

Does Colorado Springs really need another recycled politican in our local politics? Shouldn't they seek employment in the vaunted private sector they praise so highly? Being mayor, is it a consolation prize or a holding pattern for the next step up the political ladder?

And if her opponent is John Suthers? Guns, bibles, no jobs.

Re: “Lathen declares for mayor

Was expecting this. As a term-limited county commissioner she needs a job - one that pays $100K plus perks and pension. Lathen, as a staunch supporter of squandering $200M of taxpayer dollars on a downtown stadium, has earned the support of City Leaders and the Gazette who want someone in office who will get that stadium built. Despite her blather about being a fiscal conservative, she's a tax-and-spend-it-on-frivolities career politician. Between her and Bach, what's the difference? Vote for her opponent.

Re: “New biz group rides to Springs' rescue

Curious, isn't it hilarious that from one side of their mouths we hear "let the free market" prevail and out of the other side they file all sorts of court cases (or bribe politicians) to protect THEIR sacred cows from new competition. As I've said so many times before, the main family value of the political right is hypocrisy.

If Gaylord (now owned by Marriott) builds that monster place near DIA, and steals the Stock Show from Denver, then Pueblo better lawyer-up for keeping the State Fair.

Re: “New biz group rides to Springs' rescue

Crank: Anschutz, along with his fellow hotel owners, is busy in court fighting the political machinations of Aurora, whose city council gave away millions of taxpayer dollars to a developer to build a hotel and convention center between DIA and downtown Denver. The Gazette was outraged at the chicanery and mendacity and alleged unlawfulness of Aurora's politicians whose actions will enrich their community at the expense of the rest of Colorado. The Gazette frets and fumes, writing that COS will suffer greatly because tourists that had intended to rent a car and drive 70 miles south to COS to visit the Olympic museum and Bach Stadium, will now, hypnotized by the splendors of Aurora, cancel their COS visit. And, affecting Anschutz directly, conventioners will rent rooms and meeting halls in Aurora instead of at the Broadmoor.

Aurora - which to date has won in court - is another reason why it is STOOPID to build Bach Stadium and expect tourists to come. The hypocrisy, the mendacity, the chicanery of COS mayor and City Leaders is no different in its intent of fleecing the taxpayers to enrich a few well-connected elites than that of Aurora's politicians.

Cyrus Campbell - stop your whining. So what if you were "offended" by some stupid sign. The world does not owe you an apology every time you get your panties twisted.

Re: “New biz group rides to Springs' rescue

Curious: Pretty much so far Phil Anschutz's name has been largely absent from the C4C caper. For the newspaper he owns to speak with such force for C4C it hints that Anschutz has tipped his hand relative to his heretofore hidden interest is this matter; he's getting impatient and knows the deal will die if put to a public vote.

One thing the big money likes, and likes a lot, is for the taxpayers to make them richer.

Re: “New biz group rides to Springs' rescue

The Gazette editorial on Friday demands that City Council "start getting results" and stop opposing City for Champions. The editorial states that "the general fund may be short about $6M in 2015." A $6M shortfall! And the response of the mayor and City Leaders to this frightening prediction is to ignore the public and proceed with THEIR plan to build a stadium downtown. THEY intend to squander $200M or more of OUR future sales tax revenue in order to increase a property owner/developer's net worth. A $6M budget shortfall can be dealt with either by (1) reducing essential services or (2) raising taxes. One or the other or both. This is what building a useless stadium will bring about. Email the mayor and tell him to drop his plans to build the stadium because WE CAN'T AFFORD IT. And email the council members at and tell them to support the upcoming ordinance to put the stadium to a vote of the people.

Re: “Marijuana community mourns teen, Council delays action and more

Not sure what this lab rat campaign is all about. Are they saying that smoking pot is something new? And that young people are somehow lab rats for testing marijuana? If anyone is a lab rat it is we who have been smoking pot since the 1960's. With no ill effects. I'd say the testing is conclusive and complete. No one is being a "lab rat".

Re: “Doused with Cold Water

Apparently this "innocuous exercise, if a slightly narcissistic one," raised a bit of awareness in the form of over 2 million new donors and about 100 million bucks in 45 days. Perhaps we don't need government support, we just need to see something as actually valuable.

Re: “New law ushers in more elder abuse reports

Unfortunately this can and already has back-fired with unwanted results. It pressures ""professional"" "caregivers", often young and financially desperate, to be seeking signs of abuse, in order to make "points" with their employers. The entire system now works for Adult Protective Services and the State, and not for the elderly client. Many of these clients, once reported, lose their homes, dignity, spouse, and are subjected to "Involuntary Redistribution of Assets" until they finally do qualify for Medicaid. The "heros" in the law enforcement brigades are turning over cases in an upside down manner and family caregivers will eventually become afraid to serve in an increasingly needed "final family role with relatives". Please be sure your loved ones have family / friend conservators / guardians in place before someone you least suspect, and who has no idea of the ramifications of their actions, unnecessarily reports your loved one as """abused""".
