"Gluten can cause health problems ("Your brain on grain," Appetite, Dec. 11), but so can quitting. "
Most people have no clue what gluten actually is/is not and what foods it can be found in. There are a lot of people out decrying foods as having gluten when they don't. There are also a lot relying on anecdotal evidence as if they were scientific studies and spreading tons of misinformation.
"When I was raising my children, in the '60s, they had fire drills at school. Would anyone have had the remotest thought that we would have to prepare them for someone coming into their schools and shooting them? Of course not."
And yet, in the 60s, firearms were much easier to get. You could get a full-auto (machine gun) for pretty cheap whereas today they will cost you several thousand just for a worn out one. There were no background checks. Age limits were nearly non-existent.
"but can't we reasonably try to come up with some partial solutions to this problem?"
Sure. How about addressing the behavior and its root causes instead of bosessing over the object being misused?
"Better regulations? Better background checks?"
We've been trying that for 75+ years, passing more and more restrictions on what can be bought/owned, who can own, and how to buy. Hasn't had much effect. So how about we realize that was the wrong approach and try something else?
"Shouldn't we all want this awful situation to stop?"
Who doesn't? The good news is it has been decreasing even though the number of firearms in circulation have been increasing.
The solution to gun violence is already working in some places, but many people don't like the answer so they hide the truth or just mock it. The solution worked in Arapaho the rampage only lasted 80 seconds because a good guy with a gun confronted the shooter. Instead of fighting the shooter killed himself. The shooter planned to do as much damage as possible but failed. If the word gets out that schools are armed these losers will no longer attack schools, instead they will just most likely off themselves at home. But the media loves these school shootings so they will hide this fact.
It is not the goal of the Regional Banquet Alliance to 'serve the county'. Their goal is to support big business and Republican Party members who have created a local economy that is the poorest performing, economically, among the few metro counties in the state.
Their production is sub-par in working to develop local new business start-ups and lower in bringing national, job creating firms to the region. They have done well to agitate many in the small business community and to further create division within the community with their stand on issues that go against what has been expressed by voters.
City Council was correct in reducing funding for this group. Their endorsement will carry little value statewide.
Same Warren Burger who used to answer his door in his underwear and carrying a revolver?
BTW, since Burger's statements an incredible body of academic works have been published completely refuting him.
Elaine, it looks like your claims of "fraud" have been sufficiently debunked and shot full of holes (no pun intended) by not one, but three educated, informed individuals who chose to research the subject instead of letting blind partisanship guide their thoughts and deeds. Care to explain and/or defend your initial stance at this point?
The other factor that impacts on urban violence is income-disparity. Might it be that income disparity is the true reason why Chicago et al have more violent crime, rather than gun laws being the root-cause?
"What about New York City, Thinker? Huge restrictions on guns, low crime rate"
While figures do indeed fluctuate, the Big Apple, like the urban locales I mentioned previously, is awash in firearms-related violence much greater per capita than areas with less restrictive regulations.
Rodney Hammond, I have to agree with you totally. I have a medical discharge for the Air Force, with a DD214, and sadly do not receive any benefit from it to assist with employment-in an y way. Everytime I seek employment I am asked of I served. I have to say 'yes, but I am not considered due to a medical discharge." I have suffered, and suffered, living here to get ahead because of the vast job market letting vetereans with vets points exceed past me, and it totally sucks. Just once I would love to be allowed employment on that merit alone, so I can have a gainful oppurtunity that would allow me a life of no suffering.
Rich Tosches is clearly a gifted writer - however he wastes his talent by focusing on divisive political issues versus communal city-wide issues.
Do some good Rich - make our city leaders better!
Joe Atencio! You have a little crush on Tosches don't you? I should point out that The Independent is not a "funny" paper and it is not really a newspaper either. The advertisements therein confirm that it is not even independent! Tosches does not tell or write jokes. He writes one joke each week which is called a "column" but it should not be confused with "humor".
Elaine Brush obviously has a derision for The First Amendment as well. Who does she think she is to tell another person that their comment "went over the line"? Her complete lack of knowledge is indicative of the proliferation of stupidity and ignorance. A recall election is how this system is supposed to work and once again the Socialists feathers are showing as she bemoans the recalled acting on their own agenda not their constituents as being the right way. Could you be little bit more wrong Ms Brush? Yes! The expression commonly said is "An armed society is a polite society". Anti-Bill of Rights people show that they have no compunction about being impolite. All the Elaine Brush' are free to leave and settle in a country that suits them but none are free to take anyone else' Rights away. A random act by a lunatic does not make gun owners guilty of anything. Mind and tend to your own as a lunatic's family should have done and then the problems are handled before they become tragedies. Nobody else, not even police will ever protect you Ms. Brush and that is the simple fact so many of your kind fail to grasp. By the way, the use of firearms in self-defense occurs every single day in America far out-numbering the illegal use. Do some research please. Using a firearm in self-defense is the second to last thing anyone wants to do, dying being the last thing.
What about New York City, Thinker? Huge restrictions on guns, low crime rate.
Colorado Health Care Exchange Official Seeks Bonus Despite Low Signups
Elaine, cities with extreme firearms restrictions (Chicago, Detroit, D.C.) also have lopsided incidences of gun violence, proving that making an item essentially illegal to possess doesn't have any tangible benefit and that "feel good/do nothing" legislation will never make a positive impact toward reducing the figures.
Besides sophistic reasoning, another common way opponents of equal-rights argue against equal-rights is through the use of the non-sequitur - a seemingly logical statement that equates two things that have absolutely no connection.
The cab driver certainly can refuse rides...but the couple would not be asking him to participate in a religious ceremony that directly violated his own religious belief.
If they asked him to witness their marriage, that would be another story.
By your logic, if the photographer asked them not to get married because he didn't believe in same sex marriage, they should honor his request and not get married at all...the cake slices a couple of ways sweet heart.
"...mandated to buy health insurance are not complaining about having to pay for homeowner's insurance, auto insurance, etc."
The government does not require mortgage insurance, home owner insurance, or any other property insurance. The mortgager does as a condition of a loan. If you pay cash, you have the freedom to be stupid and not insure your investment.
You are not required to carry comprehensive insurance on your car. The finance company requires it as a condition of the loan. If your house or vehicle is owned outright, you do not have to insure it.
Liability insurance IS required to insure that one person's stupid or negligent act is at least somewhat covered. Yet, how many people are not responsible enough to carry liability insurance?
Obamacare is an ill conceived, government mandated intrusion in to my life. I have provided for my family's healthcare, and they now provide for themselves.
It's called personal responsibility.
I will listen harder to the "If you don't live here..." sentiments on the day that PARMMS shuns comments from those on the page that don't live in Manitou :) Till then -- can't we all just behave like adults with different opinions?
Renee, No incidents of ground water contamination? Really? Go to http://cogcc.state.co.us/. Click on database from the menu on the right side. A menu pops up and you will want to choose the Inspection/Incident link one up from the bottom. A menu pops up but all you have to do is pick spills/releases at the very top and then change limit searches from 10 to 100. I haven't checked in a bit so I'll look real quick too. There have been 100 spills/releases since 10/1/13. It appears that there have been 10 groundwater contaminations and 16 resulting in surface water being contaminated. This is per the industries reporting. Most of these spills are 'historic' meaning that they are leaks discovered by workers usually coming from a tank battery. There is no way to know how long oil has been leaking or how much impact it has had. The impacted soil is either back filled or taken to a local dump, untreated. Does this seem environmentally sound to you?
