"Odin How can "race" information be important for crime statistics and criminology? "
Really? You honestly do not understand why these demographics might be important?
Christopher Curcio, This is America, we are free to not vote and free to participate in politics in other ways without going into a booth and checking the boxes. What do you want? Mandatory voting.? Your vote rant is old as the hills and is tired. A large number actually do not vote probably because like me they do not want hire a greedy liar who won't change anything for the better and does not give a god damn rats ass about you or anyone else. You voters keep electing idiots and sociopaths that violate my Rights, keep me poor through over-regulation, pass laws without thought or asking (Hickenlooper) etc etc so why don't you all STOP voting? Shame on you for being so stupid and letting them distract you with climate, health care, War on Drugs when the fact is our economy is tanking and they still call it a "recession" and we are "recovering". Most of the stuff you purchase comes from Communist China, Obama is a Socialist and borrows from China trillions of US dollars (almost worthless), borrows from the Federal Reserve, bails out banks and corporations, the minimum wage is lower than 1970. There are 2.3 million people in prison (most are non-violent offenders) and now you can be arrested and jailed without due process if they think you might be a terrorist or maybe later and on and on. Shame on me? I don't think so.
Odin How can "race" information be important for crime statistics and criminology? It is absurd to collect that kind of data especially when you yourself do not know what "race" actually means. If a man has brown skin and was born in USA but appears "Negro" which became "African American" which is "Black" (a color not a race). So if his hub caps are stolen criminologists need this "Black" information? BS! If I say "racism" most will automatically think of "whites" hating "blacks" as though Caucasians are the only practitioners of such a thing, so much so there is a common phrase to refer to non-white racists: "reverse racism". Ridiculous. Furthermore we have a common police practice which I believe to be illegal and that being "racial profiling". Ask your criminologists if traffic stops and arrests of "blacks" went down when it was banned. We know the answer already. Police try every trick to violate your Rights and they lie about it as well. They profile all the time doing traffic stops which does little to prevent or solve crime. My license plates were stolen while still attached to my vehicle. Someone drove that vehicle around this city for three months until the plates expired and left it in a apartment parking lot. I, not police, found it. One flat tire, dead battery, expired tags and empty fuel tanks. Police do not respond to abandoned vehicle calls. They don't seem to do much except stop drivers that they hope are DUI. I wonder how knowing my "race" will aid future crime-solvers? The victim here cannot stop someone from stealing his plates if he saw them. Police are not going to look for them. The crook has little to fear but the "race" of the victim must be filled out on the online report?! Time spent and wasted plus buying new tags. A minute to steal them, not one second spent looking for them, hours and money spent by the victim who is what race ??
Ahriana Platten, You are correct and possibly unaware of police and traffic stop tactics which go beyond the "public safety" hogwash. In many places travelers have cash and belongings confiscated plus are forced to sign statements admitting guilt to breaking some arcane law. Civil forfeiture is the new wave of revenue enhancement for law enforcement. If CSP wanted safety why do they then hide in order to catch you speeding? Visible patrol vehicles slow people down. Some agencies try to ticket drivers who flash lights to warn oncoming traffic of police presence! My grandmother told me years ago that she remembered the CSP being called "The Courtesy Patrol".
For a horror story do a Google search "tenaha texas police corruption". You may never travel again after reading what the DA and police did to travelers there. We are in or close to becoming a police state. I saw a sign last weekend "CSP Saturation..." on Highway 115. It is chilling.
Thank you, Frank Pado....and to quote Confessed Old Geezer Hazlehurst, Bill Murray actually is fun, progressive, quarrelsome, delightful, adventurous and amazing. You have my word for it, and no, I am not biased. I firmly believe that you are going to find this new Council dynamic quite energetic and creative and far more interested in solidarity in finding solutions, than we have been struggling under for the past 4 years. Give them a chance to find their rhythm and then everyone out there, try to keep up! (NOTE: that Murray resides in Briargate was a random act of realty decision when he moved here in 2008, not to be held against him.....he would prefer a loft on Tejon Street)
P.S. Mark, all of this was verified via the online reporting system.
Exercising the privilege of driving on publicly maintained roads is explicit consent to monitoring. We fully expect CSP to be watching us and our speeds, since it is their job to ensure compliance. There is no expectation of privacy in this case. This is as opposed to "big brother", which monitored exercising rights, without consent, and violated rights/expectations of privacy to do so.
Mark S. Young,
This information is important for crime statistics and criminology.
If you are in Colorado Springs, the report allows you to select the following under "Race":
1) American Indian/Alaskan Native
2) Asian/Pacific Islander
FYI, Hispanic or Latino is not considered a race, it is an ethnic-linguistic group. Most Hispanics are White or some part American Indian, but there are also quite a few Black Hispanics. You would select Hispanic, non-Hispanic, or Unknown under "Ethnicity". Also, reporting ethnicity is indeed optional, race is not.
dp72. You could be no more spot on! I witnessed myself what you have laid down here. Saturday nights at the Hungry Farmer were filled with hippies, cowboys, business folk; we all got along. The developers and the xtian right indeed have separated us.
Side note. Where are Mr. Ed and his legions of T-gops Brucers now that we see who they truly are? ENOUGH!
Repeal TABOR immediately, vote in Mary Lou. Let's get moving again.

Hold on there! I live east of Academy and head downtown often. I vote left. I hate strip malls.I've seen homes in my suburbs with solar panels, even! Don't lump all of us together -- after all, east of Chelton used to be suburbs a long time ago.
Thank you, Thom Andreas, well said. Thanks for calling out the father for his uncharitable, judgmental behavior and inaccurate misuse of loaded words. That guy is full of hate and condemnation, and he gives Christians a bad name.
Back in the 1970s the city council was called "The Club" and had an appetite for expansion that seemed like it would never be quenched. The annexation of Broadmoor, Ivywild, Stratmoor, Knob Hill, Chapel Hills, etc... frequently ended up in court. The Broadmoor annexation at least resulted in the requirement of an election before future annexations could proceed.
Colorado Springs even wanted to be a city and county government.
All the City could see was tax money at the end of the annexation rainbow. Now that all of that infrastructure, originally built by contractors and LIDs, is up for replacement or repair no one wants to pay up. Government, parks, or churches occupy what were core industrial areas further reducing community's ability to generate tax revenue and growth. All that is missing is a community pot garden that distributes communal weed tax free.
The Club got what it asked for. The City has grown too large to ever go back to the days of little towns ringing the City. It's time to pay the check.
Right on Christopher Curcio! Get out and VOTE!
More of the same going forward in Pothole City.......sigh.
Maybe we can disregard Hazlehurst's column because he is too old. But really I am more interested in what a politician wants to do than what their demographics are. I see diversity of ideas from at least some of the new city council members regardless of age. Bill Murray for example seems to have more new ideas than many 20 somethings. I think we can call for a truce between the suburban Springs soccer parent and the downtown hipster A strong downtown enhances, supports and is supported by it suburbs.
Of course, if there was more political involvement of progressive minded folks, the balance of power can shift as the Springs is now. Higher voter turnout typically leads to left leaning candidates and initiatives winning elections.
A few wins in the right direction can lead to a larger long term shift.
I love it! Most people who live east of Academy and north of Woodman never leave their land of forever strip malls anyway. Most metropolitan areas this size are composed of multiple cities. The priorities and demographics of this city are split in two, so we should formalize the separation. They can have their TABOR that kills our infrastructure, and we can have transform our core into the collection of walkable / bikable neighborhoods that promote the community most of us want.
Would be a lot easier if we sent a delegation of local gays and realtors to SF, CA to recruit 25,000 GLBT folks to move here and change the political balance of power. I'm sure they're tired of paying $1000 per sq ft for a tiny abode in a crowded city. Once they see our low home prices and lack of traffic there will be a land rush for here. As the balance of power changes we can get rid of Doug Lamborn and TABOR, et al. The daily picketing of FOTF will drive that bunch out of here and on to TX where their true believers will welcome them by waving guns and bibles as the wagon train of FOTF expats arrive in their conestoga wagons.
