Re: “District 11 will ask voters again for a tax increase in November

I don't think they really know why the previous measures were defeated, thus this campaign isn't likely to end any differently. It makes me wonder how much research they did with the voter base. Nevertheless I won't be voting for any tax increase that contains unnecessary spending. A one-time bond issue for SPECIFIC building renovations is supportable, but a permanent mill levy increase for more feel good social programs is something else altogether.

Re: “Indy joins newsrooms nationwide to report on hate with your help

"If hate is wrong..." Is it wrong to hate evil?

"...and is implied to be an exclusive Right-Wing trait..." Who is implying that? I am not a right winger, but I do hate Nazis and Nazism, and I am proud of it.

"...why are so many speaking and writing with such venom and vitriol about the president?" Why are so many racists and Nazis supporting the president?

"Is that not enough to take a closer look at who might commit a hate crime?" I prefer looking at who has actually been committing hate crimes to idle speculation.

"Of course it is." Seems you have at least one supporter.

Re: “Is burlesque sex work?

Burlesque is a form of entertainment, an art from like dancing. It is not sex work. I've enjoyed the shows put on the local troupe called Peaks and Pasties with gorgeous costumes and tastefully done. Go see for yourself at this link: http://www.peaksandpasties.com

Re: “Is burlesque sex work?

Can you be arrested for burlesque? Yes, but it is highly unlikely and the charge wouldn't be prostitution. if a burlesque performer was arrested for a performance the charge would be along the lines of something to do with obscenity or public indecency.

The terminology 'sex work' and 'sex worker' was introduced to battle the pervasive stigma associated with prostitution and prostitutes. It was also thought to be a way of humanizing and legitimizing the trade and vocation. However, whoever coined that term wasn't thinking of how it might be misused or how it could derail important work by confusing the issues- which the above article demonstrates.

Now, years later- in some regions, particularly America, it has become a 'catch all' phrase. Basically anything to do with erotica and the exchange of money, whether sex is involved or not, whether the vocation is criminalized or not, can be described as 'sex work' in the eyes of many.

Some take the label as a show of solidarity. A nice gesture, but how does this add up in terms of activism, the fight for decriminalization and the movement seeking to establish access to human rights for people working in the criminalized sex trade?

I am an erotic service provider.

Re: “Is burlesque sex work?

The term 'sex work' or 'sex worker' is very loosely used in the USA. Prostitute on the other hand- wouldn't encompass everything that 'sex worker' often has. Many in the adult services and performances arena use the term sex worker even though they aren't providing sex and aren't criminalized. Others don't want to use it for that reason. I personally prefer 'erotic service provider' a terminology coined by long time prostitute and human rights activist Maxine Doogan who founded the Erotic Service Providers Legal Education and Research Project as well as the Eroric Service Providers Union. It more accurately encompasses any and all vocations and services which span a spectrum in the adult industry. Burlesque could easily be considered an erotic service, but SEX work? I don't think so. Could you refer to a burlesque performer as a prostitute? I wager most would say NO. A burlesque performer is a burlesque performer. If the performer is also providing sexual services as a prostitute, that would be another vocation all together. A prostitute who also performs burlesque. Erotic service provider would cover it all even when they are taking it off.

LOVE to my sisters and brothers in the erotic services industry!

Re: “Former Colorado Springs reporter named as finalist in prestigious contest

Hobbs shouldn't have trouble competing against young reporters at the Washington Post, as the Post no longer employs any reporters. All they have left are opinion piece writers and click-bait headline editors.

Re: “Watchdogs criticize Trump's easing of ban on 'politicking from the pulpit'

I'm sure Jim Daly appreciates the easing of the Johnson Amendment as much as he appreciates the $2.3 M Focus on the Family received from the Koch Bros for their political arm. (Denver Post). So does this mean that Focus on the Family (a business) has the spiritual welfare and needs of the Koch Bros. come before the needs of their flock? Do all followers of Focus on the Family support the voter suppression laws that are advocated by the American Legislative Exchange Council (a Koch funded political group)? Does Focus on the Family support voter surpressuon through its political arm? Do you think Focus on the Family really believes in the teachings of Christ when they are a mouthpiece for the Koch Bros.? When Jim Daly advocates for a candidate or piece of legistion in the halls of government or ballot issue, is he avocating for this flock or the Koch Bros.? Will Focus on the Family allow opposition to their position (KB) to be spoken at the same time? How does a front group for the Koch Bros. qualify for tax exempt status? Questions that need to be answered.

Re: “Mixed blessings

Sometimes it's frighting when people say things like he is a man of God but has never proved that his sons was raised back to life . He should go out of his way prove it happened. If he does not prove that one thing he is a feud and a lied about the whole thing. Does that then still make him a Man Of God .........I don't think it squares up with what Jesus said Let your yes mean yes . One lie leads to another you cannot trust a double minded man .

Re: “Wommack's pathway to prominence

If I was Wommack I would be shouting the fact of my son being drought back to life, I would have a link on my website linking it back to all intuitions who had knowledge of it or reported it ,like the hospital ,news reports on local tv or radio, because raising a person to life is not a common event and word gets round in a small town .Links to Doctors who treated his son before and after the event ,As Jesus said to the lepro go and show yourself to the priest and offer offerings .I am sure he just did not walk out of hospital and no one even challenged him.If he just walked out there must be a person responsible for the morge they would be missing a dead body some sort of paper trail would be out there .As I said if I where him it would be front page news on my site backed up with times and dated and witness reports etc. If my son got raised to life it would be a big talking point in my small town for years.

Re: “Indy joins newsrooms nationwide to report on hate with your help

Hate crimes just shot up after Trump got elected...?!
Can anyone actually dig deeper into this statement and qualify it? It is a vague and broad statement that leaves some wondering: who, what, when, where, and why, those things The Independent spends very little time bothering with. Those that wish to can say "Told ya so". Those that predict bad things and hope those bad things come to pass can quite possibly be the perpetrators of bad things. If hate is wrong and is implied to be an exclusive Right-Wing trait why are so many speaking and writing with such venom and vitriol about the president? Is that not enough to take a closer look at who might commit a hate crime? Of course it is.
Another example that I am trying to stress is how phrasing can and is intended in the first place to create a belief. While not actually having any basis in fact it is designed to allow the writer to be innocent of lying and the reader to be guilty of believing an implication of something was in fact not true. It is the now-trending wave of phony journalists not needing an editor to orchestrate the act of yellow journalism, they can write with their own biases as long as the the editor shares the same biases.
So an anti-drug web site reports that in Denver meth arrests are up 140% (approximate). So they imply to the impressionable that their whole premise of a "drug epidemic" is a fact. It had no other statement or stat on methamphetamine use being up, just arrests. Big difference. And pure propaganda. Also web sites want visitors because that is how money is made.
So the feigned concern is merely a dash at cash not unlike other "charitable" causes such as homeless shelters and soup kitchens. The directors keep some funds as salary and hope that homelessness continues. Those funds they do receive are mostly from government (taxpayers) divided up to executive agencies who while arguing about who receives how much pay themselves off the top. A lot of money wasted, no problem is solved and no crisis averted. The answer for the particular problem of homelessness is simple:buy them houses and stay out of their lives, do not make rules or set-up hoops for them to jump through. Those in government from city council on up then can work to scrap regulations that strangle growth and stifle business. The economy and free market can return which creates jobs and jobs keep people busy and too tired at days end to hate or bother to read about hate. Keeping hate, racism and bigotry is the media s job... If they were really trying to get to the source. The media is the source, they are the tool of government and government has every reason for us to stay poor and hating each other so we do not take a closer look at what they are doing.
They want you to shut up, be disarmed, afraid of saying no to illegal search and seizures, pay more tax, receive less services that you paid for and for the poor they have a tax called lottery, and your Fifth Amendment Right has been propagandized into the notion that remaining silent means guilt when it was intended to keep citizens from having to answer any questions at all at any time from authority. The work-around is the Grand Jury. Keep alive the notion that the Supreme Court makes the laws and what they say goes is almost genius.
Lets see the Independent do their dumb man on the street question sometime asking "What is The Rule Of Law" and "What Is The Law of the Land" then last not least "Who Gave You Your Rights". I will wager, if it is kept honest that few will know the answers. They know about beer and dopeand that is how it is supposed to be, huh?

Re: “Legally, it doesn't take much for a guest to stake a claim to your home

What if it is your ex husband who was only allowed to come over to babysit his child occasionally since he does not have a home of his own suitable for a child to visit at while the custodial parent/legal tenant is at work? One day he just refuses to leave. Police are called, he lies tells them he lives in the house, does not have belongings, keys,or any right to be in the house other than to visit his child. He even kicked in the front door to get inside when the door was locked. Also tells police that he was shoved out the door, now the legal tenant who pays all the bills is arrested,a protective order is placed against her and is legally banned to go back to her home, forced to live in her car with their child. Called donestic violence shelter and is refuses help since she is considered to be the "abuser".
