Got to be a lot more to this story than appears here. Employees can be let go without cause in the private sector so the city must be offering sweet deals to entice the people that they do. Property owners are not aware of problems before they buy? The US Forest Service record of mismanaging forests is not a secret and building a home in or near a forest is a risk. Why does the city require certain roofing material and ban others? Fire danger. Build a house under a cliff...
We all know someone who works for the city do we not? Do you all have the same question as I do: How in the hell did you get that job??
And to those who favor paying more for what you already paid for: how are your roads?
Where does the Forest Service factor in when rain water pours down burned mountainsides and into the city? What about owners of land that are covered with asphalt or concrete? Motor City is lucky to be next to a creek? Their street is smooth as can be considering its location and that it was paved same time my neighborhood was and these streets are crap and are producing sediment in abundance.
If rainfall is a huge mystery then managing a city must be a nightmare. I know I am lost wondering about why "downhill" "downstream" are not being considered as alternatives then I see "EPA". Oh yeah. A strong mayor can squeeze the money right out of a budget so get the boss of the EPA to raise the debt ceiling. I will take my severance pay now, thank you.
Suthers is a fool. He absolutely has no clue what a jewel he had with Tim working for the City. Tim Mitros went far and above his duties to help out flood and fire victims. He worked tirelessly. Let's see Suthers try to get someone even close to Mr. Mitros' dedication and work ethics.
Minimum wage is no incentive for an employee to excel and it still is lower than it was in 1973 as far as the buying power of the dollar.
Restaurant (and bar) owners can drop the tipping scheme altogether and raise menu prices. Why should a waitstaff earn more because the cook is good? I know that feeling all too well, just as I did as a dishwasher too...way underpaid and treated as subhuman by the kitchen and waitstaff who went home daily with cash and clean outfits.
Business owner comparisons to CEOs is ridiculous. A CEO works for a company and its shareholders who expect a profit every quarter and if not that CEO is gone. Equality does not exist in the real world, only in generalizations. Bill Gates worth 90 billion?! Investors think so, I don't.
Pay a worker what he/she is worth and you have a good staff without problems. Overwork and underpay a worker then I advise you to not let them handle customer's food... or yours.

It is always a great feeling to find organizations that support the LGBTQ community. One of my favorites is the Pikes Peak Derby Dames. They are a women's flat-track roller derby team that is, not only inclusive of any and all woman, but also transgender females and anyone identifying as being LGBTQ. Recently they held a Skate-a-thon that raised money for Inside/Out! They are truly a remarkable group of ladies.

I define lefties as people who impute evil and bad motives to business owners and other successful people. You did that with " employees are seen as an expense that needs to be minimized". This is often the case, but not always, and less now than 100 years ago. With "maximum income ratio", both the need for incentives and the need for equality are addressed. With a guaranteed minimum wage, there is the constant risk that a business will go bankrupt; businesses cannot hire people who would otherwise add value to the business but not at the level of the minimum wage, so the people don't get hired at all. And the CEOs just keep on keeping on, increasing their income at the same rate as the percentage of raise in the minimum wage increased the wage of the entry level worker. With the minimum wage, equality is never addressed.
My son just started work about 2 months ago at a fast food joint. Although we are very glad he just got a 12% raise, we also know that the raise will come out of the pockets of the customers, and if the customers don't like the increase in the price, they will go elsewhere and my son could be looking for work elsewhere. "Looking for work" doesn't pay very well, if at all since he has only been working there for 8 weeks. I voted for the increase, but I think that "maximum income ratio" is a much better idea. But since when did the American people go to a much better idea?
I know why Suther's nudged out Mitros. He didn't like the fact that Mitros was getting so close to those people who lost their homes when our CITY FATHERS got in bed with DEVELOPERS and allowed homes to be built on land THEY KNEW was in a landslide area! It doesn't get much worse than that! They chose GREED over SAFETY! Personally I think the homeowners should file a CLASS ACTION lawsuit against the City. It is absolutely going to affect the value of other homes in the area as well, even if those homes aren't on the landslide area. How dare the City put development OVER the welfare of the people! And who did the ignorant electorate vote for Mayor and onto City Council? All Republicans, many of whom (including the Mayor) were financially backed by DEVELOPERS!
Of course it's a good thing. Business owners love to talk about supply and demand, although, as if employees are not also consumers. On the supply side, employees are seen as an expense that needs to be minimized; on the demand side, the more income a person has the more they will spend. Recognizing the fact that employees are consumers undermines the justification for the absurd 1 to 360 income ratio as discussed above by Mr. Bird. I would clarify, Mr. Bird, that no CEO, no matter how talented they think they are, is 360 times more valuable than the lowest-paid worker who puts their products on the shelves or provides their services. I wonder, Mr. Bird, what do you get out of making unqualified characterizations such as "unlike lefties?" Does saying something stupid help your argument? No. Enough.
I call BS on what Kanatzar says. How many waiters does his restaurant employ, and what is the additional wage cost per day he has to bear? When you factor it out over the sales per day, what is the average rise in cost per meal served? I am willing to bet it is in pennies (or fractions of a penny), and so his entire argument is total BS.
How does he set the prices for meals? Can he give an accurate cost breakdown of every item served in his restaurant, or is it just prices close to his competitors, without an actual cost analysis?
There is so much that needs to be said about this. But the comment section of the Independent is not the place. Nor, obviously, is the Gazette.

A better way would be the "maximum income ratio". This means that the ratio between the highest paid employee, presumably the company CEO, divided by the lowest paid employee would be some fixed ratio, less than the current absurd ratios that we see now. Some really absurd ratios are like 360 to 1 in the USA. In Japan we see numbers like 10 to 1. I think that 12 to 1 or 20 to 1 would be healthy ratios.
This would preserve incentive while giving some semblance of equality. With minimum wage, some businesses just go out of business and the people on the top just keep giving themselves raises. In our society, no worker is 360 times more valuable than any other worker. Unlike lefties, I recognize the value of decision making, risk taking, and other CEO activities. But 360 times more important? That is obscene.
Maketa should be sued for the "$821,496 on settlements with employees or ex-employees, attorney fees, and consulting and investigation expenses stemming from claims related to Maketa", plus all legal costs incurred. He was in charge and the buck should stop with him. Hold him financially accountable. He was being paid to do the right thing and he did not perform to reasonable expectations.
You're also competing against 10000 other applications of well rounded and excellent kids.
I'm Hispanic, a first generation immigrant, and I graduated from there.
I recommend ditching the victim mentality and continuing to apply.
Reply to solraczurc - the academy is one of the most diverse institutions and the cadet wing is made up of people of all ethnic backgrounds, from all economic backgrounds and from all social backgrounds. If your son didn't make it in on his first try, as many don't (very few get in on their first and only attempt), he should reapply and keep reapplying until he either 1) gets in or 2) becomes ineligible.
Each appointment has a primary and up to 10 secondary appointees. Where did he rank? He should have a debrief on why he wasn't a primary selection. Does he need to improve his SAT/ACT scores? Does he need additional extracurricular activities? Perhaps he should volunteer in Big Brothers/Big Sisters, the local YMCA, or join Toast Masters.
I find your statement laughable yet insulting to the many men and women from all walks of life that I had the pleasure and honor of calling my friends and squadron mates. I am the son of a firefighter from the southside of a large city. I have very blue collar upbringing and roots. I walked the halls with the son of a Medal of Honor winner, but also with many others more like me than him. They were white, black, Hispanic, Arabic, and Asian. Some were from prestigious prep schools but others were like me, that didn't enjoy a silver spoon upbringing and were the product of public schools.
To state he wasn't selected simply because he is Hispanic is extremely naive. To further add insult to injury, to broad brush and stereotype all cadets as 'sons and daughters of politicians and high ranking military leaders' shows both your ignorance and arrogance.
I certainly hope that you son does not share any of your same thought process, bigotry or generalizations. People with that type of mindset have a hard time getting in and if they do, do not survive in the microcosm that is the cadet wing.
My son was well rounded and well prepared (both academically and physically) applicant last year. He would have been class 2020 at AFA. But was overlooked probably because he is hispanic and the academy gives preference to sons and daughters of politicians and high ranking military leaders that dont take their appointment serious...what a waste.
They should give the appointments to regular kids like mine that really are serious about the commitment and service to our great nation..
