Private housing is not uncommon. Private apartment buildings for students only does not seem the norm. If not run by campus housing what security problems (increased police calls) will this cause. Sad that neighbors have to pay to ask the City for consideration of their concerns. Anything built to support the university should need to fit the landscape. City planning should do more planning than rubber stamping.
What's with the time limits on finding and keeping a full-time job?! It's COLORADO. If you have issues that keep you from getting full-time work like your CREDIT or references or lack of full-time verifiable work experience, then you can't stay at a homeless shelter either because it will likely take YEARS to get a job over those barriers, not 60-days....?!?!?
The State director is a liar and a cheat. The program was changed for reducing the director's workloads which was transfered to the three contracted food banks. The food banks operate the commodity program based on their own business needs and cannot take any governmental accountability for the people they serve. The director did not hold any public hearings for changing the commodity program which had been running over 30 years in Colorado. In addition, the director lied to the people of Colorado that more food would be offered due to the change. The change cannot offer more food to the people of Colorado because the change did not bring more food grant from USDA to the Colorado. The three food banks always provide other donated food to the needy people with the distribution of USDA commodity food with or without the change. The director hid the truth to the people in Colorado and lied to the people of Colorado!
Note to Gordon Klingenschmitt - I don't know you, but I know Bob Gardner. I had the opportunity to work with him a couple of times while he was my state rep. We may have policy disagreements related to how he and others chose to respond to Obamacare, but Bob is a good man and a solid conservative.
Late in his last term, I expressed interest in running for his vacated seat. He unselfishly offered to spend time with me to educate me on how to go about doing that. I also know he offered the same to everyone who expressed an interest in running. He appreciated everyday citizens being involved in government and the issues. This is another example of how he sacrificed his own wealth making time to help others.
You earn exactly ZERO credibility and trust from me when your opening move is to trash a fellow conservative. Stop the character assassination on people who are on our side.
Save your outbursts for the leftist progressives who are fundamentally transforming the city, county, state and country into something they were never meant to be.
When the Affordable Care Act passed, Bob Gardner co-sponsored the state bill to establish a state health exchange. States that refused to set up their own exchanges had the federal exchange foisted upon them. No doubt Gardner will defend his decision as having been the best way to minimize federal government intrusion into local business, which does not contradict his stated basic opposition to the federal act.
My religion taught me to give people the benefit of the doubt, to be reluctant to accuse anyone of a serious infraction. So, I am inclined to dismiss Klingenschmitt's illogical conclusion as a misunderstanding rather than a deliberate attempt to mislead.
On the other hand, I am appalled and dismayed by Mr. Klingenschmitt's rush to judgement and casual accusation of dishonesty. Mr. Klingenschmitt likes to wear his religion on his sleeve. The admonition against bearing false witness is one of the Ten Commandments. Perhaps he does not understand what that means either.
In the Gazette editorial today, we are told that Martin is the reason there are potholes in COS.
Also today, an article on the front page tells of a city owned drainage ditch causing a landslide in Rockrimmon. The city, despite repeated requests by the homeowners, did not secure the ditch because there was no money in the budget. And yet Martin and other City Leaders are comfortable with spending $200M of sales tax revenue to build a stadium and millions more to upgrade access roads and build a parking structure and bridge to ATB park.
Potholes. Drainage ditches. Washed out roads. Fixing these is a top priority that will take years to accomplish. City Leaders who cared about COS and its citizens would use the sales tax they will siphon off to build the stadium to fix these problems. In fact, City Leaders should abandon their plans to build the stadium. No stadium. Now. And never.
How can this Gordon James Klingenschmitt claim a state lawmaker—whether a conservative Republican like Bob Gardner or anyone else—could "co-sponsor Obamacare" in the General Assembly? Does he think voters are stupid? Neither party had anything to do with enacting that federal law. It was Congress' doing. Klingenschmitt accuses Gardner of a "phony denial," but given Klingenschmitt's own flat-out fallacy, he sounds like the phony to me. Voters are sick and tired of that kind of fast and loose campaign rhetoric. I'm going to guess some BIG MONEY and SLICK CONSULTANTS out of Washington are behind Klingenschmitt's early use of the big lie.
Stan, I wasn't familiar with Klingenschnitzel's academic record other than that his alma mater really is the former Christian Broadcasting Network University. Back when he first made the news and I couldn't get enough of his loopiness, I did poke around on the Web but couldn't get past his uproarious YouTube "debate" with the Owensboro Baptist nut over whether God actually hates gays or just wants guys like Dr. "Chaps" to exorcise them. Not making THAT up, either. Check it out; this guy's a hoot: https://youtu.be/Nmekb4k-ZeM
Speaking of fact checking, what WAS that issue with Corporal Kingerschnitzel's "PhD"? Maybe some of his other purported degrees, too? And to think that, in the first place, it was issued by a fringe diploma mill like "Regent University" (formerly the "Christian Broadcasting Network University"—not making that up).
Testing deal reached? So what does prohibit assigning an accreditation rating (based on test scores) to school districts actually mean? Are districts not going to be evaluated at all this year?
Fact check on Bob's dishonest statement: "I've opposed Obamacare from the very beginning and continue to do so." No, actually Bob Gardner was the only Republican to co-sponsor Obamacare with 32 Democrats and put it forever into Colorado law, HB13-1266, proof document posted at gordonforcolorado dot com. Bob publicly admitted my document was accurate, so now he contradicts his own public admission with a phony denial. If he's dishonest about his record now, how can he be trusted in the future?
Hi, Mrs. Austin-MacKenzie:
Thanks for your comment, and for reading our story. To get further questions answered about how the trust operates, I’d suggest contacting the organization directly at 447-9300 or rmclt.org.
only two kinds of people vote for religious freak republicans... rich people and religious freak idiots.
Hello, Ms. Akens. In the interest and spirit of journalistic integrity and, if possible, please provide a follow up response to my following questions:
When a Land Trust homeowner decides to sell their home...is selling the home "to another eligible buyer" the ONLY requirement of being able to sell the home? Respectfully, I would like to see this piece of journalism "dig a little deeper" and investigate, for the sake of potential program participants and truth, just what are the precise terms, financial and otherwise, that are stipulated for a RMC Land Trust "homeowner" to sell what is described as THEIR real-estate (property)?
Thank you kindly,
Mrs. Angel Austin-MacKenzie
Jan Martin spent 8 years on Council and has NOTHING to show for it. She was vocal about abuses of the Mayor and the City Attorney in the new form of government, but when it mattered, she voted against doing anything about it in order to not be "divisive."
As chair of the committee in charge of handing over millions of taxpayer dollars per year to the Conventions and Visitors Bureau, she promised for years to demand some sort of accountability to the CVB, but they still get a free pass and still get the corporate welfare.
She has lambasted the Regional Business Alliance for getting involved in political issues (rightly so), but when it came time to funding them at their full requested amount, she was there with a yes vote every time.
She was also there with a yes vote for a half-a-billion dollar salary for the Utilities CEO and favored a no-compete contract to bilk CSU ratepayers for a solar subsidy because she "liked" the young professional who ran the company who would receive the dollars.
"Some schools, especially charters and alternative schools, had alarmingly high rates of exemptions."
Some schools that aren't convenient dropoff points and require careful effort and consideration for your child's future. Hmmmmm.
A moratorium of 4 years, or 6 or 8 years, would put a welcome roadblock in the way of career politicians. A moratorium would prevent careerists from acquiring power and would open the doors for new candidates with new ideas. Entrenched career politicians, beholden to their financial backers and in a position to grant favors using public tax money, are a deterrent to government by the people.
Oh Staci6, I almost "liked" your post, but then the stinger at the end just ruined it for me. Please don't taint your praise with pettiness.
I was also at Cleo Wallace ..back in the 80's. I was a runaway child, I ran away from an abusive home..my counselor at the time talked me into choosing this place ( I had a choice between this place and a workforce type place..I had chosen the workforce place, but was told I would like this place better) in the end I was at Cleo Wallace. I was already a shy child, I had problems communicating with people, upon arrival they put me on something called social isolation (because of my history of running away) I had no problem with being isolated as I was very shy anyway..but a part of the social isolation was that I had to sit in a hard chair facing a wall 8 hours out of my day ..to insure I was not talking to anyone.. I could leave the chair to eat, and to join group where I could speak to others. If anyone walked by and talked to me while I was in this chair, this was seen as an aggressive act in my treatment, my chair would be taken from me, and I would have to sit on the floor.. if I tried to talk to the staff to tell them I didnt try to talk..I was thrown to the floor..by several adults climbing on top of me. The first time I fought back, as I felt I couldnt breath. The next two times I went limp right away so they would stop. There was a male staff member who would press himself into me..I could tell he was erect..he would also come into my room at night when he worked. I finally ran away from there during a medical appointment. I was one fo the lucky ones to get away. They did keep all of my personal items.. but it was worth the trade off..
"Regarding your characterization of Indy content..." I wrote of being "bombarded" and you interpret that as "Indy content!" It was meant to refer to all of the information from all sources. I'm sorry if it confused you. I feel I must add for your benefit that I was only referring to political information. Hope this helps.
Note I did not write "too much news" because I never intended my observation to be limited to the news media, yet you interpreted the word "information" to be restricted not only to the news media, but specifically to the Indy!
How could my words refer only to the Indy? I wrote about someone who would "likely vacillate between the two candidates many times before the election." You seem to think I am such a fool as to believe someone would favor Suthers many times before the election based solely on reporting by the Indy!
I certainly did not intend to exclude the Indy, but I meant to include all political discussion, including the smarmy words being bandied back and forth right here in this blog.
