Re: “U.S. Olympic Museum wants money from Colorado Springs

Have not looked at all the figures but if one were to have in hand all the sales and property tax revenue given away to 'encourage' development - - would there be enough money to pay for stormwater and catch up on pensions?

They are also lying on the application. The $26 million in debt that the application claims is a done deal depends on the City providing or finding $130 to build and finance the infrastructure for the museum. Wait for that one--commitment is due by March.

Re: “U.S. Olympic Museum wants money from Colorado Springs

Well- there probably won't be a citizen discussion...the LART Committee (chaired by Nor'wood Exec Fred Veitch--remember this whole thing is a Nor'wood concoction in land controlled by Nor'wood) will send a recommendation to Council and they will quietly approve/disapprove of the item on the "consent calendar" unless someone takes the time to track the issue and determine which meeting the item will have the item and call it off of the consent calendar at the appropriate time--Bennett will give one millisecond for that to happen. There has been a proposal and yet another taxpayer funded study recommending doubling or more of the existing LART tax.

Re: “U.S. Olympic Museum wants money from Colorado Springs

LART dollars may have previously been used to assist tourist-related, public projects like the Summit House and pickleball courts, but it would be unprecedented and irresponsible for elected officials to allow public dollars to be spent on this private project, especially when many public amenities, like our parks, that bring countless tourists to our region, remain drastically underfunded.

If Nor'wood wants its Olympic Museum, then it should pay for it.

Re: “U.S. Olympic Museum wants money from Colorado Springs

rms:

A quesadilla at Taco Bell is food. A thick filet at The Famous is food. It is all food; much in the same way that taxes are taxes. A tax is a tax is a tax. Are we getting ready to be told that funding from L.A.R.T. is not really a 'tax' for us because it is money from hotel and car rentals therefore they are taxes being paid by somebody else? And that, therefore, using those tax revenues for anything associated with C4C is not actually violating the 'promise' made by various within the elected realm to not use public money for any part of C4C?

On the surface, that seems like some real 'slick-willy' logic.

Am quite sure that the Chamber-EDC folk, the Colorado Springs Forward Bunch - and CONO plus the Convention/Visitor Bureau will all have representatives standing up before council encouraging council members one and all to support taking these monies to help with the funding for the Olympic Museum.

Watch for the President of Council to impose strict speaking time limits to those who oppose this move and to allow unlimited time for those in support.

Re: “U.S. Olympic Museum wants money from Colorado Springs

What part of "private funding" don't they understand? This request however is no surprise. The "private" funders only want the money to flow in one direction - from the citizens and into their pockets. We have to hold them accountable for promises they made that this was NOT going to use public funds without a vote of that said public.

Re: “Colorado Springs cancels buffered bike line experiment

I'm not sure my quote came out quite right, at least how I meant to say it.

I do care if people ride bikes, and I'd like citizens and visitors all around Colorado Springs to be able to safely, efficiently and for whatever reason they would like to, from their own garage to a place of value within their own community, or beyond. No matter their age or ability.

Do I want to force people onto bicycles, no.

I truly believe that if we build a community that allows transportation choices, people will be free to use whatever mode suits them best, brings them the most enjoyment, allows for variety and meets the needs of our city's modern needs.

Re: “U.S. Olympic Museum wants money from Colorado Springs

Look on the bright side: we now know just how desperate the Olympic museum project is for funding, and as citizens protesting the use of public funds, we're getting an opportunity to put another nail in the coffin of a bad idea.

Re: “U.S. Olympic Museum wants money from Colorado Springs

$500,000 is a first installment on nearly $200,000,000 that taxpayers will pay for museum infrastructure. This is the project everyone was told that the "State" and "private financing" was going to pay for. Who is surprised that was a lie? Not anyone who listened to the facts.

Re: “Colorado Springs parks report shows good value

@SANDMARC, the invitations were sent by the Parks Department. The meeting itself was also controlled by the Parks Department. It was their meeting, and per a letter signed by Suthers and Bennett, it was their study. Also, there are rules which prohibit gifts to public officials. If they did not pay for the catered event, then that is a gift. These rules exist so that the powerful cannot exert undue influence on public officials, and one entity does not control a city. That is good public policy.
