I enjoy your column very much so I hope that you will print this in one of your upcoming editions. I think people should know. I was jamming at The Compund after reading your article above, lets just say I hope to warn any musician who needs a space to play to not go there I was disgusted by the operation of this place and even though I was warned by others to not go jam at this place I was trying to save a buck...well it is true whne people say you get what you pay for. I am going to spend the extra money and go to the Green Room where I was headed before. I hear great things from my peers about it and I needed to move right away.
So just a big fat buyer beware to the musicians in Colorado about The Compound...DO NOT DO IT.

Is this just about music? Or may I comment about the art scene?
Cottonwood Center for the Arts (427 E. Colorado Ave., www.cottonwoodcenterforthearts.com) is the biggest thing to hit this city in forever! Nowhere else can you find 80+ artists under one roof. They host an open house on the last Friday of every month and invite local bands/singers to perform (as a non-profit, the bands rely on tips but what a great way to get out into the public). And how about Stargazers Theatre & Event Center (10 S Parkside Dr.)? They've got some excellent performances all the time as well.

Why do you always leave theLoft out?
theElement was the same way.
I feel theLoft is doing far more to build the "scene" in Colorado Springs than all those places you listed combined. Even The Black Sheep gives them more credit than you do.
theLoft gives people like me something to belong to, something bigger than me to be a part of. They aren't just serving music to those already in the scene, they are paving the way into a non-musical community and inviting people you'd never reach with Reverb to be a part of our ever growing "Scene". I was not into music and bands before I became a theLoft regular, and now I don't know how I survived before. All I'm saying is, even without the back of the people that should be supporting them the most, you all at the independent, they are facilitating the growth of something fantastic. You should come check it out if you havent, there's a free Christmas in August family dinner on the 15th with some great local bands. I think you might like it, seeing as you write about the same bands every week.

This album is fantastic. I bought the Deluxe edition off their website and was glad I did. It includes a 25 page booklet with lyrics, photos and the inspiration behind each song. And to cap it off they listed the name of each person who bought this edition. How cool is that? Personally, I love it that Carly Simon cameos on Should I Pray? I think the author here is trying to be too cool in dissin' Ms Simon.

Adam!!! Yay, I found you on the first try! Jenny Garza here. Out on the scene!! Freshman @ PPCC however 29. Yay, to that because my music taste is diverse, and comes from experience, we'll say. Such as yours... I hear when it comes to the local scene you are where it's at. I am going to start covering the Union, for fun (for practice.) They don't mind me. I play nice. They think you and I would hit it off. Soooo, let's.
Can't find anyone else to get excited about this stuff with me Adam. Have a good feeling about you. We should team up. Or I will at least watch from a far for now. You are good. You are not afraid to throw your humor around, makes for fun, obviously. Eng Maj, BTW. We'll see what happens. I live near the Union so it's the perfect project for me. :) Be there Thursday?

Hello Rick,
I met you through recording a CD for Darrell Bain and where Harry Specht did a harmonica track. That was a very memorable experience to see and hear!
I was amazed at how you recorded the artists' voice, his backing vocal artists, and overlayed your diverse instumental tracks to complement the entire composition!!!
Harry and I are now in San Diego. I'm glad I can find you online and hope all is well. We know Chuck Pyle for his Unity church events where Harry set up the audio equipment, plus other local festivities in The Springs. Chuck Pyle was the first musician I heard at my first visit to Unity Rockies and I was moved to tears by his heart felt music and lyrics. It is great that you are offering concerts.
We miss Colorado Springs and our friends there. But we are slowly connecting with musicians in the San Diego area now.

what a refreshing article. It's great being reminded of all the great music I grew up to living in the springs. I remembered seeing the doors but couldn't remember where, reeds ranch that was it thankyou for the memories.

@ asg1290 Well, it's a great lineup for a local show, but I think you're being a little over the top with your assertion that it's the biggest music event of the year. Right off the top of my head I can list about five shows this year that have had or will have a bigger impact than the Carnivale concert. (e.g., Devotchka w/ Haunted Windchimes at Armstrong Hall, Abigail Washburn and Sparrow Quartet (also at Armstrong), Elton John's coming to the World Arena, etc.) Glad you're passionate, but maybe you could temper your passion with a little reality, eh?

How do you ignore Manitou Springs carnival?! There is music at every bar in town featuring Low Down High, DUG, Don Dooley, The Tribe, Arch Hooks, Grant Sabin, Creating A Newsense, The Haunted Windchimes, The Jack Trades, The Genuwines, The Woodshed Quartet and more?! It is the biggest music event in our town all year and there isn't even a peep about it here

I like your coinage "Sino-Americana." As one quite familiar with Washburn's music, I think it's a perfectly succinct yet full description of her unique sound. One clarification: the Sparrow Quartet did not play at the Beijing Olympics, though they did play shows in and around Beijing during the 2008 Olympics. "A fact that until now has flown low low below the radar is that The Sparrow Quartet was supposed to play an Olympic venue in Beijing...but we didn't play an Olympic venue," wrote Washburn in her blog "Tales of Abigail" (at www.abigailwashburn.com) on August 28.

Not sure about the comment that "back in the 80s and up through to today, Spot's production of Hüsker Dü's SST albums has been almost universally derided as lousy." Amazon customers all give "Zen Arcade" and "New Day Rising" either five stars (80%) or four stars (20%), which means both albums rate higher than Nirvana's "Nevermind."
