Why would people ridicule him and why would he back off? Don't dismiss him, without listening to what he has to say. Check out YouTube "lincoln dinner allen west". I didn't know much about him, but he is impressive and he make me feel proud to be an American. He loves this country, is brave and won't back down. He deserves to be heard.

If a republican president was in office, you would have accused him of colusion with the drug companies. And how is it again that a recent republican nominee is all of a sudden the devil incarnate? Jimmie, your mind is so warped you can't begin to see reality. The good ole USA will never reach your definition of nirvana. Why don't you try Greece or France. They seem to think like you.

Jimmie, Jimmie, Jimmie: how do you believe jobs are created, if not by companies and corporations and private enterprise? You don't really believe that government creates jobs, do you? When discussing "economic scam", think of the billions and even trillions spent by your guy Obama and not ONE job was created. (Think Solyndra, et al.)
One more small point of clarification, you and your buddy's definition of creating jobs for the "American worker" is another ill conceived "economic scam" to funnel money to the unions. Shame on you Jimmie. Why don't you tell the truth, for once?

You did not "force" me to acknowledge that Woody Guthrie was a communist. I never claimed he was not a communist. I was merely demonstrating that your "revelation" was old news to me.
According to Webster, specious means "having a false look of truth or genuineness." You believe, smartestman, that a commie cannot possibly be a hero. It has the look of truth, but it is not. As I said earlier, Woody Guthrie is loved by millions, who do not care about the label, only about his accomplishments. It is a sad commentary on America during those years of the Great Depression that communists were the only ones willing to lay their lives on the line against a repressive government for the benefit of working people. I am sure if you and the Koch brothers get your way, America will see the rebirth of communism.

How else to explain your foolish notion that your words somehow hurt me so much I had to complain to the editors? Long before the Independent ever had a blog, I used to participate in newsgroups which were not moderated and hold my own against people who were proud to call themselves white supremacists and racists, and much more creative than you when it came to calling their opponents vile names.
Nevertheless, I see that you are proud of your ability to slander and insult, even as you condemn it in others. As I said, you have a double-standard.

Once again, smartestman, you demonstrate your inability to read a simple paragraph with comprehension. The Hightower article dances around Woody Guthrie's politics, but I never mentioned them. Woody Guthrie claimed to be a member of the Communist Party, USA, and was quite proud of it, but no record of his membership actually exists. He asked the party for a column in their newspaper, the Daily Worker, and wrote a total of 174 columns under the heading of "Woody Sez."
Once again you erect a straw man and demonstrate how easily you can knock him down. Not to mention the double-standard by which you justify remarks like "nut-job" and "loon" as good clean fun, but the left "hides behind slander and insult!"

I'm wondering why cowards like Mr. C run away from what they are. Guthrie was indeed a communist in heart and practice if not on paper. He wouldn't deny it. Why do you feel the need?
I am a staunch fiscal conservative and embrace it. I am certainly not ashamed of what I am. However, the mealy-mouthed Mr. C is indeed ashamed of what he is and hides behind slander and insult as do many on the extreme left.

Contrary to your specious claim, millions love Woody Guthrie, which sends his few detractors into paroxysms of fear and loathing. One thing the article does not mention, is the label displayed prominently on Woody's guitar that read, "This machine kills fascists."

The Wyden Amendment makes sense. Since we are taking the risk of an oil spill on our homeland from the Keystone XL Pipeline, then all the oil it transports should stay here. And the pipeline should be built and be maintained by American workers -- with American made materials.
Otherwise, we would be relegating our land to be a 30 year stepping stone for Canada to transport its dirty oil to foreign markets.
Moreover, the Wyden Amendment should be used as a model for all offshore and public land drilling. If our country incurs the long term risk of a spill, then it should also get the maximum benefit.
The "free market" will have to take a back seat on this one.
Our environment ain't free -- even to the free market.

This article contains an error, that is typical of the independent. Rep. West's Hummer is a 2008 Hummer H3. The MSRP was $30,995 to $39,560. Check your facts.

At least I thank Mr Hightower for telling me that Allen West does in fact DRIVE a vehicle (unlike the Sec of Energy, Mr Chu). Secondly there are numerous other pipelines that traverse the US.

A warm winter will produce a temporary glut, but conservation efforts ought to have a more lasting effect. At any rate, I find it odd that gasoline prices are rising during this temporary glut.

From my understanding the OldCrank has been a supporter of the Republican Party for many years, probably most of his life. Therefore, his disappointment in their hypocrisy is greater. He never expected better from the Democrats, so they have not been a disappointment. On the contrary, it must be disappointing to see the Democrats suddenly become the party of reason and sanity, at least in theory if not in practice.

Cranky: why do you persist? Don't you mean politicians are lying? Why single out one side when the other is at least as bad? And I don't believe "Hypocrisy" can be attributed to any one party either.
You are correct in pointing out that "The USA now exports more petroleum than it imports." At least at this very moment. There is a temporary glut due to a warm winter and conservation efforts by the good citizens. Won't last and what's your point?
