Re: “Fireworks displays don't come together in a day

Millions of individual Americans have been celebrating our freedom by lighting off fireworks on the 4th for much of our nation's history. Today, that right is being trampled by government officials bent on ever-more control. Even here in Colorado it's now illegal to light off sky rockets, roman candles, fire crackers (I love Black Cat fire crackers), and a myriad of other fireworks. It disgusts me that government can so easily crush our freedoms, and that more Americans aren't incensed by the constant erosion of our rights.

Re: “With few shelter options, many homeless will likely reside in tents over the summer

Re SRMs new 150-bed shelter - "even that project won't meet the need." ------ Of course it won't. The "compassion industry", whose goal is to SERVE the poor - rather than help the poor to help themselves - is a growth industry.

Have just finished reading "Charity Detox" (by the author of "Toxic Charity"). What an eye opener! The current service-provider paradigm is a failure because it doesn't move poor people and the poor communities they live in out of poverty. Only economic community building and good-paying jobs can do that.

Re: “Do utility 'connect fees' unfairly punish smaller users?

New to the area and APPALLED at this charge....the larger metropolitan companies have an incremental fee component where after a certain amount of KWH the cost per KWH goes up - thereby giving us retired/disabled an ability to "take charge of our own destiny" by reducing our useage. This fee eliminates our ability to do this and unfairly burdens us. $30 a month on an income of $1000 is a huge unfair burden, while on an income of $4000 per month is a mere inconvenience....we need to stop this or our communities will die off even faster. Why should I pay an extra $30 per month and continue to put $$ into the community (Calhan) when I can pay the same rent being charged here and have the convenience of living in the Springs for less money? I retired to a rural community because I grew up rural, and like so many of our youth had to leave to live. I came back to try and support the community lifestyle that I loved-why should we be penalized?

Re: “Rise of the e-bike

Electric bikes are so fun and useful, I see them riding around the city all the time. It's interesting to think that these have been around for so long, but because they get such good mileage, and seem to go on forever, it make sense. I wouldn't be surprised to see more of these riding around the city as they start to get more popular, and people see all the benefits that comes with them. http://human-electric-hybrids.com/h.e.h.-home.html

Re: “CSU report suggests Front Range could become 'the Silicon Valley of agriculture'

Agriculture on the high plains? Hickenlooper is from Pennsylvania and not a farmer in Colorado by any means. Food does not grow here very well. (hint:It is a desert) Cattle feed maybe and cantaloupes in Rocky Ford when the weather is just right. Wheat out east toward Kansas but Silicon Valley comparisons do not fly. If one knew how many vineyards and orchards were bulldozed in the late 1950's and 1960's to create San Jose's cheap tract houses which sell for millions now they would shudder at the thought of being compared. But the outlying wheat and cornfields once around Denver are all sprouting tract homes now and the larger homes house the folks who bought low in San Jose and sold "Silicon" high then moved here where their dollar bought a lot more house. They had plenty to spare and bought up local governments to do their bidding. It also drove natives out of once affordable homes in a process called "Californicating".

Re: “How to pick the best summer camp for your kids this year

As Camp Owners of Swift Nature Camp and over 20 years in the business, I agree with all the information here. The only thing I would need to ad. Summer camps have a culture and this culture is not always highlighted on the website. So how do you differentiate between camps, because lets face it archery is archery. Here are few ways to help: Ask the director, look at camp size, ask other campers, and of course do a review search online. Hope that helps
