The push to get rid of the power plant is short sighted, as environmental opponents will make building a replacement next to impossible - meaning only the rich will soon be able to afford electricity and still put food on the table.

Regarding the comment: "Ms. Burbach retired after being relieved as program manager of a Laboratory whose credibility she destroyed"

How do you know this, Coloradowrits ...aka Vincent Todd?
Does the report specifically state this?

Don't project your own unethical behaviors that got you disbarred in the first place and prohibit you from being reinstated, onto someone else.

Some of your other "facts" are also inaccurate.
Not surprising, given your lack of professional legal status.

Re: “Around the horn on a downtown Springs stadium

It is Republican and patriotic to support government subsidized business activity. Mayor Bach has decided David Jenkin's bad real estate decisions need to be "helped" by government subsidy. David foolishly purchased several large pieces of obsolete downtown real estate. David wisely made some large campaign contributions to Bach's campaign.

First, David bought The bankrupt Plaza of the Rockies. Then he convinced then mayor Robert Issac to build the second tower on the south end of the Plaza structure, thus creating a subsidized downtown home for the ever popular CS Utilities.

David has purchased the old Crissey Fowler Lumber Yard, and the old steel fabrication company sites along Cimarron. His plan is to get his friend Steve Bach to tear down the old coal fired electric utility plant, and replace it with a large, publicly subsidized baseball stadium. This will theoretically "help" David's real estate, which is right next door.

Developer Bach will make sure the surveys show powerful public interest in a downtown ball park, even if there is really no interest. The studies will ignore the collapsing downtown retail markets as retail internet and large high resolution television screens change the public's tastes for crowds. Once they get it built, the baseball stadium will flop. And the taxpayers will be paying off this boondoggle for decades, just like we are paying off the Olympic Training Center real estate adventure in stupidity.

Government subsidies only prolong the death rattle. True innovation will be needed to fix the downtown. Baseball diamonds all across the country are all old ideas, and they all lose money.

New ideas will prevail. Think about how to make the new internet help downtown. Make it your friend, not your enemy. It will be hard. Learn to use the new social internet connections to benefit the downtown.
Build a new high speed rail line from our old Airport all the way to DIA. Connect it to downtown. Think Bigger than you ever have.

Re: “Burbach, city break from state drug lab

MirandaMiller345 writes, "If people fail to take advantage of their 2nd blood sample for testing at a different lab, then the fault lies with themselves and their defense attorney."
So, if a defendant, at considerable expense, has the ability to retest the state's evidence, perjury by prosecution witnesses is okay? Putting qualified forensic toxicologists on the stand at trial costs a defendant a minimum, just for the expert witness fees, $2.500. You should also know that, while not permitted by the Regulations, it appears that CDPHE invades the 2nd sample when they need to do internal retesting because of personnel turnover or laboratory error.
You are about to see the confirmation from the investigative report, released by the Attorney General on Friday, which does not deal with most of the issues discussed in the article, that Ms. Burbach retired after being relieved as program manager of a Laboratory whose credibility she destroyed.

Re: “Colorado in the immigration debate

THESE OLD SENATE WAR HORSES SHOULD BE PUT OUT TO PASTURE AND THE ALL THE REST SEEM TO HAVE DIMENSIA AND FORGOT WHO THEY WORK FOR? MAXIMUM PRIORITY SHOULD BE ON THE 10 MILLION PLUS JOBLESS AMERICANS AND NOT PANDERING TO THE SPECIAL INTEREST LOBBY?

The only Senator, who has the Americans security in mind, is Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama, stating, “The federal government has reached a point now where virtually no one is being deported, except those convicted of serious crimes." I heard what that old War Horse Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont had to say on cable, which majority Americans see it as very poor performance, that doesn’t place any tough enforcement for the border (the 2006 Secure fence Act) that still remains in stasis, and that double layer fence only occupies 17 miles in San Diego County and remains so approximately 8 years. Than this Gang of Eight and 16 others have just about rejected any of the tough amendments that would stifle the next waves of another illegal alien invasion. As Sessions said today this immigration enforcement has not been fixed? I think the chairman of the judicial committee Leahy stays measurably unclean, after negotiating with the unions, La Raza, Dept of Commerce the giant agricultural mega companies, tech companies, pro-immigration organizations and the other special interests behind closed doors. It is also without doubt the billionaire Socialist George Soros is involved, specifically on the Lefts mild Communistic agenda. Instead of playing into the unethical hands of the money people, the irrational Senators could have gained some acceptance by adding the triggers. If this Senate bill 477 passes as it is, America is dead economically? Millions of Americans still jobless will be up against the 10 to 25 million who’s suddenly become legal and can then compete to be hired. ALL THE TRIGGERS BUT A FEW WERE DISMISSED AS IRRELEVANT BY THE GANG OF EIGHT?

Sen. Leahy and his colluding Senators have done nothing to stop massive welfare payouts to illegal aliens and their offspring now or in the future. The Border Patrol spokesman Crane has been restrained from arresting criminal aliens along the border by order of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director John Morton, but my guess it comes from the White House, and that even ICE agents in internal enforcement have NO CONFIDENCE in DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano. Health care coverage for newly legalized immigrants is emerging as a barbed concern in Congress’ driving to remake the nation’s immigration system, that is posing problems for Senate negotiators and threatening to derail when it reaches the House. The question is how much access to taxpayer-subsidized healthcare should be granted to immigrants who were here illegally and are embarking on a pathway to citizenship. Homeland Secretary Janet Napolitano mounted a vigorous defense of the Senate Gang of Eight’s comprehensive immigration plan Tuesday, declaring the legislation an “important first step” to reforming the nation’s immigration laws. Then again under senate 477, she would have the total power over running the immigration laws, which would be a crisis in the making, and as we are all well aware the taxpayers will get all the costs to incur the path to citizenship, processing for the millions, medical examinations and those who get a working visa, able to sponsor close family seniors, progeny that will need retirement, social security programs. The fines that are supposed to be imposed, is just a $1000.00 and Sessions in imparted, that just like the previous punishments for breaking the law, it will never be enforced? WHO PAYS FOR THIS? YOU ARE THE PAYEE!

THIS LAW IS FAR WORSE THAN EVEN THE 1986 IMMIGRATION REFORM & CONTROL LAW (IRCA) AND WILL EVEN NULLIFY THE LAWS ON THE BOOKS. THIS LAW IT’S SO SOFT BECAUSE THE WORK MAGNET IS STILL THERE, DRAWING MORE TO THE BORDER AND NOT DEPARTING AFTER A VISITORS VISA EXPIRES. Sen. Leahy and his corrupt co-conspirators refused the amendment, to install a departure location at airports to fingerprinting passengers leaving the country. This is a cost effective entry and exit mechanism that was introduced by Sen. Sessions, who was criticized and lambasted by a gathering of elderly Senators who obviously been pressured by the wealthy lobbyists, who run amok continuously in Washington. There are hundreds of thousands of green cards in this assembly line, for Guest workers and will also need monetary support in years to come. Even the mandatory E-Verify program is really compromised, by dragging its enforcement over 18 months, instead of implementing the program immediately?

READ THE RUSSMUSSEN POLLING RESULTS ON THIS SENATE BILL 477 AND IMMIGRATION LAWS, THAT FOR ME IS THE ONLY REPORT THAT ABSOLUTELY TELLS THE TRUTH OF PEOPLE WHO HAVE BEEN QUESTIONED. RUSMUSSEN POLLS ARE NOT DOCTORED SO THAT PRO-ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS GET ANANSWER CONFORMING TO THEIR NEGATIVE AGENDA. Tuesday, May 07, 2013: The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 55% of Likely U.S. Voters still favor the plan that would give legal status to those here now illegally who have otherwise obeyed the law as long as the government really secures the border to prevent future illegal immigration. Thirty percent (30%) oppose the plan even with the guarantee of tougher border security. Fifteen percent (15%) are undecided.

GET ALL THE FACTS NOT THE HYPE AT www.numbersusa.com, www.americanpatrol.com, www.judicialwatch.org and Previous generations of Americans/ legal residents must band together on this urgent matter nothing will change. The wealthy purveyors of cash and favors in the pockets of the G8 will prevail, and the rest of us will be startled by the corrupt IRS institution wanting more taxes. As for the IRS after this fiasco, the whole institution should be abolished and let us enter the realm of a flat tax. A simple consumption tax on goods or a single, small rate of tax on income to fund each administration and the services provided. That is where taxable income and corporate profits don’t escape payment for living in this great country. A fair and equal tax that everybody will pay, without any exemptions, including, mega corporations who hide their ill-gotten gains overseas and even the poor must pay a small amount, instead of living of the taxpayer. IN CONCLUSION WE SHOULD DEMAND FROM CONGRESS A NATIONAL BIOMETRIC ID CARD, GIVING CITIZENS SOME MEASURE OF SECURITY IN CLAIMING A JOB, BEING ABLE TO VOTE AND AS A SAFEGUARD AGAINST CREDIT CARD FRAUD. If every citizen possessed a federal ID card there would be no more severe issues over identification in voting with non-citizen.

Explore all the information that will be our awful fate if this law passes. IT IS NOW OR NEVER TO FIGHT BACK OR WE WILL ONCE AGAIN BE CONDEMNED TO BE VISITED ONCE AGAIN BY THE IRS. Re: “Burbach, city break from state drug lab

Defendents suspected of driving under the influence have 2 blood samples drawn.
That 2nd sample is provided to the individual to be re-tested by an independent lab.

Defense attorneys know that their client has 2 samples and that their client can
have that 2nd sample tested elsewhere.

So, no one's lives are at stake, because a lab didn't attain a higher "voluntary" accreditation.

If people fail to take advantage of their 2nd blood sample for testing at a different lab,
then the fault lies with themselves and their defense attorney.

There are many very simple reasons (not failures) for a lab not reaching the higher voluntary accreditation level.
It only means the lab doesn't put that extra "feather" in their "testing hat."
As long as the lab is still meeting all good laboratory practices and standards, the lab continues to perform testing and testimony and doesn't have to remove their "testing hat."

The only "scandal" that is apparent here is that some defense attorneys might not fully inform their clients of their 2nd sample for testing by an independent lab.

Re: “Love thy immigrant stranger as thyself

Meanwhile, in an effort to have a wholesome discussion....

This one paragraph says a lot: "There are signs that evangelicals' softening on immigration reform reflects a changing theology of sin and Christian obligation: a growing appreciation of how unjust social and legal institutions and the brutality of global capitalism trap the world's tired, poor, huddled masses. This may be particularly true of younger evangelicals who are disillusioned with their parents' Christian right."

It means younger ones GOT the message of the "occupy" protests and angry mobs of people around the globe who protest meetings of the IMF, G8, Finance Ministers, World Bank, etc.

It means that when people look at immigration and human dignity issues through the lens of WWJD, they see how very wrong are their bigoted parents and anti-reform loudmouths.

It means that images of fat old angry white slobs riding around in Tea Party Express buses trying to kill health care for all Americans drove the younger ones to say "WTF is that about?" They got the message that the Tea Party is about white power and corporate greed.

It means that the young ones see the horror that's hidden behind corporate logo's like Nike's, where products are made by people who live in stunning poverty like Nike workers in Cambodia who are making $14/month with ZERO benefits - or any kindnesses at all. WWJD?

They see the insane greed that recently caused a factory collapse in Bangladesh that has so far killed 1100+ sweaty serfs trying to make a living in deplorable conditions.

Nike, at al, deflect by saying they don't set labor wages or working conditions or building codes in foreign nations. Imagine that.

The young see through the hypocrisy of the GOP and religious right's lofty talk and gutter reality. The GOP panders to the religious right, racists, gunners, and other blocs to craft together enough votes (and money) to sway an election. I wish them ever more failure.

Marvelous article. Really is.

Too bad that comments by siggie and TT are typically execrable. If the Indy ever enforced any standards these two tirds would be flushed and gone, but at least we do get see what many so-called conservatives are really like.

Re: “Burbach, city break from state drug lab

Voluntary accreditation doesn't make sense.

Peoples lives are at stake in capital punishment cases, but also at stake is whether or not a possibly innocent person spends a lifetime in prison, or a person is wrongly convicted of DUI and incurs many thousands of dollars of costs for years to come.

If I were a defense lawyer and my client was being tried on evidence from a lab that FAILED the accreditation process you can bet that I'd insist that the evidence be thrown out.

Voluntary or not, this lab FAILED accreditation!

WHY did it fail? WHY was this "leader" unable to get her lab accredited?

Why should we keep her if her lab FAILED to pass the test and thus assure that high standards are maintained?

There's a scandal here and with her departure there's movement in the right direction.

Someone said the other day at lunch in Manitou that the city officials should lead by example. They should take the shuttle or pay for parking instead of having free parking in the back of city hall or on the side.

Re: “Burbach, city break from state drug lab

Re: "More to the story..."

You can make up any story you want if you have that mentality, or you can educate yourself:

Clinical toxicology laboratories are subject to federal law including mandated options
for accreditation (CLIA) and forensic toxicology laboratories are subject to varying levels of voluntary (did you catch that word? "Voluntary") accreditation.
The difference being, if a "clinical" lab performing testing for patient treatment, fails accreditation, they can no longer perform clincal lab testing on patients. That is not the case for forensic toxicology labs, where testing is not for patient treatment.

And yet another fact that may need repeating: People retire after lengthy service to their employer (20, 25, 30 years) for a variety of reasons, such as caring for aging family members, spending time traveling, etc. Should tread lightly when making false assumptions and connecting the dots incorrectly. Only makes you look foolish in the end.

I want to know more about councilman Andres Pico's employment with this company. If there is no actual conflict of interest there is at least a HUGE perceived conflict. Doesn't the city have rules about this? Something stink big time.

Re: “Burbach, city break from state drug lab

So, who does accredit these labs?

Does this state, or other states, require any accreditation at all of these labs?

It sounds like this state sought accreditation and failed. There's more to this story...

It all fits into the Koch Bros agenda to destroy public sector jobs.

A British company, yeah, so conveniently close to our city. Not.

Mayor Botch gets an "A" from AFP on this one, and Sean the haircut Paige will personally deliver a pretty piece of paper commending Botch for a (hatchet) job well done.

Now hurry Mr. Mayor and get on with wrecking a decent middle class existence for workers over at CSU! Hurry! Can't let anyone live above minimum wage in Koch Paradise!
