Minimum wage is no incentive for an employee to excel and it still is lower than it was in 1973 as far as the buying power of the dollar.
Restaurant (and bar) owners can drop the tipping scheme altogether and raise menu prices. Why should a waitstaff earn more because the cook is good? I know that feeling all too well, just as I did as a dishwasher too...way underpaid and treated as subhuman by the kitchen and waitstaff who went home daily with cash and clean outfits.
Business owner comparisons to CEOs is ridiculous. A CEO works for a company and its shareholders who expect a profit every quarter and if not that CEO is gone. Equality does not exist in the real world, only in generalizations. Bill Gates worth 90 billion?! Investors think so, I don't.
Pay a worker what he/she is worth and you have a good staff without problems. Overwork and underpay a worker then I advise you to not let them handle customer's food... or yours.

It is always a great feeling to find organizations that support the LGBTQ community. One of my favorites is the Pikes Peak Derby Dames. They are a women's flat-track roller derby team that is, not only inclusive of any and all woman, but also transgender females and anyone identifying as being LGBTQ. Recently they held a Skate-a-thon that raised money for Inside/Out! They are truly a remarkable group of ladies.

I define lefties as people who impute evil and bad motives to business owners and other successful people. You did that with " employees are seen as an expense that needs to be minimized". This is often the case, but not always, and less now than 100 years ago. With "maximum income ratio", both the need for incentives and the need for equality are addressed. With a guaranteed minimum wage, there is the constant risk that a business will go bankrupt; businesses cannot hire people who would otherwise add value to the business but not at the level of the minimum wage, so the people don't get hired at all. And the CEOs just keep on keeping on, increasing their income at the same rate as the percentage of raise in the minimum wage increased the wage of the entry level worker. With the minimum wage, equality is never addressed.
My son just started work about 2 months ago at a fast food joint. Although we are very glad he just got a 12% raise, we also know that the raise will come out of the pockets of the customers, and if the customers don't like the increase in the price, they will go elsewhere and my son could be looking for work elsewhere. "Looking for work" doesn't pay very well, if at all since he has only been working there for 8 weeks. I voted for the increase, but I think that "maximum income ratio" is a much better idea. But since when did the American people go to a much better idea?
I know why Suther's nudged out Mitros. He didn't like the fact that Mitros was getting so close to those people who lost their homes when our CITY FATHERS got in bed with DEVELOPERS and allowed homes to be built on land THEY KNEW was in a landslide area! It doesn't get much worse than that! They chose GREED over SAFETY! Personally I think the homeowners should file a CLASS ACTION lawsuit against the City. It is absolutely going to affect the value of other homes in the area as well, even if those homes aren't on the landslide area. How dare the City put development OVER the welfare of the people! And who did the ignorant electorate vote for Mayor and onto City Council? All Republicans, many of whom (including the Mayor) were financially backed by DEVELOPERS!

Of course it's a good thing. Business owners love to talk about supply and demand, although, as if employees are not also consumers. On the supply side, employees are seen as an expense that needs to be minimized; on the demand side, the more income a person has the more they will spend. Recognizing the fact that employees are consumers undermines the justification for the absurd 1 to 360 income ratio as discussed above by Mr. Bird. I would clarify, Mr. Bird, that no CEO, no matter how talented they think they are, is 360 times more valuable than the lowest-paid worker who puts their products on the shelves or provides their services. I wonder, Mr. Bird, what do you get out of making unqualified characterizations such as "unlike lefties?" Does saying something stupid help your argument? No. Enough.
I don't think Kristin understands that a "free speech zone" prohibits "free speech" unless in a designated area.

Okay, I played a lot of "risk", while toking to JD. The Canuck mistook Japan for a powerful country that is not feeling suddenly lonely between Kim jong and beijing. Trump defaults on our debt...savings bonds are worthless, aaaaplus credit rating vaporized... maybe Tokyo too, keep an eye on Kuala Lampur, hehe. I call BS on what Kanatzar says. How many waiters does his restaurant employ, and what is the additional wage cost per day he has to bear? When you factor it out over the sales per day, what is the average rise in cost per meal served? I am willing to bet it is in pennies (or fractions of a penny), and so his entire argument is total BS.
How does he set the prices for meals? Can he give an accurate cost breakdown of every item served in his restaurant, or is it just prices close to his competitors, without an actual cost analysis?
There is so much that needs to be said about this. But the comment section of the Independent is not the place. Nor, obviously, is the Gazette.

Every single one of his administrative appointments is anti-LGBTQ. Some, like Betsy DeVos, Trumps pick for Education secretary, have simply donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to anti-LGBTQ organizations. But others, like Mike Pence, his vice-president, have supported conversion therapy and signed legislation that sent same-sex couples to jail for simply filling out a marriage application. Which means that, despite Trumps apparent ambiguity on the subject, the lawmakers who support LGBTQ equality are very, very nervous and for good reason.
A better way would be the "maximum income ratio". This means that the ratio between the highest paid employee, presumably the company CEO, divided by the lowest paid employee would be some fixed ratio, less than the current absurd ratios that we see now. Some really absurd ratios are like 360 to 1 in the USA. In Japan we see numbers like 10 to 1. I think that 12 to 1 or 20 to 1 would be healthy ratios.
This would preserve incentive while giving some semblance of equality. With minimum wage, some businesses just go out of business and the people on the top just keep giving themselves raises. In our society, no worker is 360 times more valuable than any other worker. Unlike lefties, I recognize the value of decision making, risk taking, and other CEO activities. But 360 times more important? That is obscene.
For $113K - working on more substantive issues would seem important - as it is, a commissioner seat seems to be a full time paid position to campaign for the next election. Fortunately, Mrs. Clark rather ineptly handled the matter of county electeds having three terms! She finessed the issue to ensure she would get a third term and those to follow would not. One question that might need to be asked is if there is a need for a measure to limit commissioner terms to just one. Any thoughts?
I find myself agreeing with your assertion regarding the research for this article. Had a bit more research been conducted I am sure the true nature of the mining museum, Haunted Mines relationship would have come to light.
I too, have been involved with the Haunted Mines for the past several years as well as being in the haunt industry for over 20 years and the business community for over 30. I was fortunate enough in 2016 to be appointed to the Haunted Mines Board of Directors so I have had first-hand experience with Angels leadership and the toxic relationship with the mining museum. It is necessary to point out that the Haunted Mines is 100% volunteer. This includes all of our staff, actors as well as myself, Stacy and, believe it or not, Angel. No one at the Haunted Mines receives any monetary compensation for the hours of work we provide.
I pride myself on being a very reasonable and affable individual. When I first meet people I treat them with respect and deference. In tense, confrontational situations I try very hard to find acceptable compromise. It is for these reason that I was completely shocked and, to use a word, gobsmacked after my first direct interaction with the mining museum board of directors. A meeting was scheduled in early August with the museum director and one or two other members of the mining museum board. This meeting was to discuss the placement of the Colorado Fear Fest, a new haunted attraction owned by the Haunted Mines. Little did I, or my other directors know that this was actually to be a meeting with the full mining museum board. Regardless, I entered the meeting with an open mind and with the hopes of establishing a fresh working relationship. Unfortunately, the discussions from the mining museum board were condescending, demanding, and confrontational. As stated I have been in the business community for over 30 years, I was completely shocked at the treatment directed towards Angle, Stacy and myself. Had this been a corporate board room, I have no doubt charges of hostile work environment would have been justified. I found comments made and the attitudes of the board members to by borderline misogynistic. One of the most alarming exchanges had to do with moving a fence and painting the barns on the property. After donating over $120,000 to the mining museum in 2015, the board had the audacity to demand that the Haunted Mines move a property fence (one that had nothing to do with the Haunted Mines) and to pay for the painting of the two barns on the property. Interestingly in 2015, as a gesture of good will, Angel and the Haunted Mines board of directors offered to have the barns painted at their expense. The mining museum board rejected this offer and it was subsequently withdrawn.
One of the main things that has become very clear to me over the last 30 years in the business community is that you never insult money. Over the last three years, under Angels leadership, the Haunted Mines has provided almost $350,000.00 to the mining museum. Fifty percent of our revenues go to support them, we are their largest donor. To put this in perspective every other step we take, every other board we put into place, every other prop we design and build goes to support the mining museum. We do this out of love for our community and a passion for the haunt industry. For these reasons, the mining museums attitude and demands were that much more shocking. We, as a haunt family, continually bust our butts to create one of Colorados top haunted attractions, earning hundreds of thousands of dollars for the mining museum only to be insulted, condescended to and treated like dirt.
You attempt to bring derision on Angels leadership. First let me elucidate you to the fact that all three of the current Haunted Mines board of directors learned their leadership skills in the crucible that is the United States Military. We are all very proud veterans. I, myself, had the distinct honor to be an officer in the United States Army, leading our nations sons and daughters. I know leaders and leadership. Angel absolutely fits that bill. The one defining characteristic of any leader is that you put your people first. Angel is the embodiment of this philosophy. Yes, there have been volunteers that have left because they do not agree with the direction we are taking the Haunted Mines. Some folks want to keep it a back yard haunt where it is a free for all and anyone can do anything they want. Angel and the rest of our board look at things differently. This is a business that needs structure and direction. Expanding our offerings and opportunities is in the best interest of the community and our volunteers. We want to build an organization that provides opportunity for our volunteers to learn and grow as vital members of our community. To create a safe, welcoming place for anyone who wants to dig in and put in the work that is necessary. Unfortunately, not all our past volunteers have seen it this way. Some, have seen it as their personal play ground where they can spend the communitys money on their latest whim. Yes, these folks have chosen to leave our family instead of helping us build the future of the Haunted Mines.
At first, when a member of the mining museum board of directors delivered their termination letter, addressed to Angel, to my house, I was disheartened. Although dealing with the slings and arrows from the mining museum board has been challenging, the Haunted Mines has a ten-year history in our current location. I, honestly, was hoping something could be worked out. However, since receiving the letter (interesting that it was delivered to me when I wasnt home and that no meeting between the boards was called to professionally deliver this news) I have had an epiphany. Now that we no longer have the albatross of the mining museum around our necks we are free to truly engage in our philanthropic spirit and give much, much more back to worthy community organizations like Wescott Fire, Care and Share, Mercy at Miramont and etc. In actuality the sky is the limit. I have to thank the mining museum board for unshackling our creativity and philanthropy. More wonderful and exciting things to come from The Haunted Mines!
There's already a pay increase that applies to the three incoming commissioners, who take office on Jan. 10. As we previously reported: the three newly elected commissioners will see a hefty pay increase from $87,300 a year to $113,490. The raise was put in place by the Colorado General Assembly in 2015. The other two commissioners who weren't newly elected this year will remain at $87,300, but their successors will get the higher pay when they take office in January 2019.
