Mr. MacDonald knows of what he speaks. First we were subjected to the converter box "coupon" that had conveniently expired when we got around to making the purchase, thus causing many to pay the full price. Then we were suddenly informed that we would need a DTV antenna, and that the indoor flat one would be sufficient. Next we were told that we would need a rooftop DTV antenna which costs twice as much. Then some of us went to the major retailer to be informed that they don't stock them. Radio Shack had stocked only rooftop antennas with a 30-mile radius, which further complicated the issue of TV reception in places like Cañon City and Florence. Some of us either cannot, or WILL not, subscribe to satellite or cable. Period.
The scourge of military recruiters in high schools is a national disgrace. It won't be long before the draft is reinstituted, and this time around it will include females as well. Youngsters who do not want to be coerced into joining the military should be advised to declare that they are homosexual. It won't be long before the draft is reinstituted.
Military personnel gathering with police in a city street or any other public place appears to be one step away from martial law. What's next? Detaining the "usual suspects?" If an armed private citizen were to approach such a cadre of policemen and soldiers in order to "hang out," the bullets would certainly fly.
Janet Brazill, you are one of the most logical and intelligent people in the Pikes Peak Region. Your letters always make perfect sense. Thank you for not being afraid to share your opinions with the rest of us.
Bumper sticker recommendations:
Education before reproduction.
Xeriscape before water waste.
More train stations, fewer gas stations.
Toleration before condemnation.
Back in 1980 the Taliban were our friends for whom we supplied weapons to fight the Soviets. Now those same weapons are being used to kill and maim our occupying forces.
As for the boycott of China and Chinese made items, it is too late to be effective. Just wait until the Chinese control the world's food supply. The only positive result will be a sudden cure for America's obesity epidemic.
The letter captioned "Logical Progression" is a blaring example of comparing apples to oranges. It is laudable that children of any age are concerned about ecology, endangered species, and the very future of our fragile planet. Earth's environment is a major part of the legacy we bequeath to our newest generation. The subject spans all ages.
However, the idea and ideal of the sanctity and protection of traditional marriage between a man and a woman is an adult subject to which children should not be exposed. Would that letter writer espouse marriage education in elementary school? Would he be comfortable knowing a teacher would be presenting statistics that prove traditional marriages fail over fifty percent of the time? Would he approve if that subject included male and female anatomy, sexual arousal, the reproductive process, and genitalia in general? Would he be elated that children would be discussing the topic of homoosexuality and why those people do not deserve to get married because of the nasty things they do with each other? If that is the type of curriculum he recommends for, say, a Christian school, here's hoping his idea doesn't catch on.
