Chet..
The interesting thing about this story is that.. Church elders weren't prepared. In the black community.. If you are 60+ and you don't know anyone that can do your job.. than you didn't do your job.
Your story is quite generous to the Church and to the memory of the late Rev. but as the bible says you reap what you sow..
Excellent piece Chet, but without knowing it you exposed a huge problem in the black community. The Black Ceiling! Regardless of how great a man Pastor Proby was (and he was a great man) he never had a plan to pass the torch. He was THE leader for 50 years and "as he lay dying" he asks someone to look after the church, but apparently they weren't skilled enough to do it. That is a problem! We worship the old and discard the youth. What's gonna happen when Rev. Mac kicks it?? Or Jesse Jackson... or the NAACP. All aging blacks that can't mentor and lead a new generation. If you are black and under let's say 45.. you grew up under the thumb of Civil Rights. While you owe your life to the sacrifices of that generation.. you are also constantly reminded that you didn't go through what THEY went through. This church has a 100 year history in CS, but they had to look to Chicago to find a leader. I bet all the youngens, felt well respected with that move. The black community if very much like the Republican Party.. living off long gone glory days and having no consideration for youth.
Thanks for sharing this great event, Matt. But the success of the seminars wouldn't be, if not for the hard work of the other Committee Chairs Russ Noblett and Connie King, they not only organized the Wine and Cheese seminar, but also a large Intro to Wine Seminar on Friday night for nearly 100. I'm proud to be on their team.

Excellent piece!! It's time we stop thinking that this beautiful city is going to just pay for itself. It's time we invest in our community. This is cheaper than a trip to Starbucks, a pack of smokes or a happy meal.
Re: “Damn shame”
Mr. Cottons comments labor the point..
"No matter what they do we still love the people who are slandering Pastor Suttons name you know why because Pastor advices us to do so. "
Point being.. we are unable to think and do for ourselves without a Pimp.. oops I meant Pastor telling us.
