Ralph Routon

Bio:
Ralph Routon has spent most of his journalism career in Colorado Springs, but since becoming the Independent's executive editor in 2007, he's much more comfortable admitting he and Bill Clinton (and, of course, Mike Huckabee) are from a place called Hope, Ark. Ralph spent 2001-06 on a mid-life odyssey to Texas... more

Colorado and Colorado State have earned No. 11 seeds in different regions. For details and bracket analysis, check the IndyBlog before making your picks for the NCAA Tournament.

    Re: “Anarchy in the GOP

Indy reporter Chet Hardin, who wrote this story, is in Denver today but sends this response to the last comment:

    @ Dick Clark

The Tea Party Movement that I referenced in the article swept the country in 2009, after Graham Makohoniuk made his famous call for people to send tea bags to Congress.

You are correct, however, that Ron Paul and his supporters began the idea of tea party rallies in 2007. We could have explained that more in detail, sure, but it seems appropriate to view it as a separate phenomenon.

    Re: “Anarchy in the GOP

    To Sean Paige:

Yes, we were mistaken to include you among a list of Republicans and to imply that you were part of the local GOP establishment. We are removing your name from the story online, and we will print a correction in next week's Independent.

    We apologize for the error.

You're right. Unfortunate error on our part, and it has been corrected.

Thanks for bringing it to our attention,

    Re: “Bach to business

As most regular Independent readers will recall, publisher John Weiss long ago (on Dec. 23, to be exact) publicly separated himself from any involvement with our editorial product, in order to help Richard Skorman with his mayoral campaign. Obviously that includes financial support, as Louise notes in her earlier comment. I'm attaching a link to the Publisher's Note from Weiss that ran Dec. 23, but with an addendum to confirm that he has NOT had any involvement whatsoever in our endorsements and news-related coverage over the past four months. Hope this clarifies any misperception.

    Re: “Flying solo

I should have included the term "ad hominem" personal attacks, meaning:

    1. appealing to one's prejudices, emotions, or special interests rather than to one's intellect or reason.
    2. attacking an opponent's character rather than answering his argument.

When people are identifiable as public figures, there will usually be more leeway in criticism allowed. Yet we wouldn't allow anyone to label any City Council candidate a "consummate liar," as a recent commenter repeatedly tried to do.

Grant McKenzie is not a public figure, just the subject of this story. Admittedly, it's not always a clearly defined line. Our role is more of a referee in these forums. We have allowed comments that have judged him negatively. We have removed a few that went over the line and placed incorrect labels on him. As mentioned before, we do not edit or revise anyone's comments. They either run as submitted or they are removed.

    Re: “Flying solo

For the record, we do not edit anyone's posts. We reserve the right to pull a post off our site if it violates our rules, which are typical of other media's websites. If a comment includes a personal attack, not based on fact, we will remove it.

But once again, to be clear, we NEVER edit, revise, condense or change anyone's comments.
