Re: “Kum & Go gives up the fight in Old Colorado City

Goodwill's CEO is reportedly paid more than $500,000 annually, while many state and county branch CEOs are within a half-yacht striking distance of that amount.

Meanwhile, a depression-era loophole enables Goodwill to pay its workers -- many of whom are disabled -- sub-minimum wages.

Kum & Go's corporate altruism may also be exaggerated, although I've heard their Slushees are every bit as good as 7-Eleven's Slurpees.

Re: “Disaster: Huntsman chooses U2 over Beefheart

Sorry Ned, there'll be no campaign trail reading for Huntsman. He pulled out of the race Sunday evening, on Captain Beefheart's birthday, no less. I wonder if he knows?

Re: “Update: Bush, Cheney coming to Broadmoor next week

I never would have imagined those two having ties to the insurance industry.

Re: “Chavez schools cited for financial abuses

For more evidence of charter schools abusing their charters, people may want to take a look at the case of St. Hope in Sacramento. The Christian-themed charter school entered into a settlement with the U.S Department of Justice to repay $423,836.50, which represents half the funds St. Hope received in Americorps grants. The settlement arose from charges that the charter school misappropriated those funds for purposes not specified in the grant, including driving then-CEO Kevin Johnson around to personal appointments, running his personal errands and washing his car. Johnson, by the way, is a former NBA star who has since been elected mayor of Sacramento. You can find the terms of that settlement here: www.justice.gov/usao/cae/press_releases/do…
It's bad enough that charter schools are a threat to the future of public education; ripping off taxpayers is just an added bonus. (One quick disclosure: I'm the music editor over here at the Indy, although these opinions are just mine.)
