And Dave, you may have been efficient in the past and I agree with your comments having managed several utilities in the past. However, all that is going to change once the mayor starts hiring his buddies, political supporters and contributors; with absolutely no prior governmental or managerial experience to run the city.
Maybe you should think again. The city Council is no longer that relevant under the new form of government. Therefore, there will be considerably less representation than before the alteration in the form.
The problem with the Pam's of the world,is that their on a mission based on philosophy instead of what's best for the community, or based on factual information. What you will really get if they come into power is very similar to to her group's approach on twitter and Facebook. They have blocked out any opposing views. Another words, they want the public only to see complementary or positive comments relative to their efforts. What's more, these referendums are typically centered around the power brokers. Those who would benefit by deepening their pockets from political spoils. Did you know, that more than 80% of all local government corruption occurs in cities with a Strong Mayor form. Believe me, Pam and the power brokers don't care. Pam is on a ego trip.
So where should the blame the placed for current failings with the government? On the elected officials who provide no leadership or the formulation of policy that directs the city manager. Instead, they blame their lack of leadership and incompetence on the form of government and the Pam Zubeck's of the world are their cheerleaders. One final note. These groups raise big money while the common people of the city don't have the wherewithal to compete with them. No wonder the major leader of the strong Mayor group is a developer. Does that tell you anything. For more information on this subject, go here.
Danfrey- if the strong Mayor passes, you can count on the pockets with the money will be found. You can locate the cash within the pockets of the chief supporters and power brokers of the Strong Mayor form. They stand the most to gain the most from the political spoils.
And the dishonest ads will be from those who stand to gain by converting to the strong Mayor form of government. The power brokers.
TFBR-let's face it, the elected officials in Oklahoma City were accountable to the residents. Unlike Colorado Springs, where they blamed the form of government on their incompetence and inability to give proper direction and policy formation to the manager. Now a group of power brokers that seek influence in the spoils of politics have joined the incompetants. Make no mistake about it, in almost every case where municipal governments have converted to a strong Mayor,, the hiring of friends and relatives and granting major contracts to the power brokers is inevitable.
Just the power brokers are out providing funding for the strong mayor proposal. This is typical. They'll pad their pockets when good management is done. In the article above, it states some reasons that communities have turned to the strong Mayor form. However, they omit the numerous negative actions that have occurred as a result of same. Richmond Virginia changed over a few years back as the past governor could no longer serve the state due to term limits and wanted to run for mayor. He wanted to be the boss mayor, and got his wish. There was considerable scandal after he was elected including hiring relatives and other friends. Friends and people who were not qualified to perform the jobs they were hired for. Be careful.
