In 2008 I discovered a large box of video tapes my husband wanted to throw away. I couldn't see the sense in putting so many in the trash, so I started looking for another way to get rid of them. My initial research into video tape recycling came to a dead end. Because the tapes are made of many different types of plastic they aren't recyclable at this time. One thing I did discover was people making purses out of video tape, audio cassette tape, and other types of plastic. That got me thinking. I took apart a few tapes and started playing. Through trial and error I discovered a way of working with the material and made some shopping bags. From there I made a few purses and other items but really didn't want to work in personal apparel. What I wanted was to do was see how I could turn this obsolete material into art and started playing with small sculptural forms. At present, I'm still working to see what can be done with the medium of fiber sculpture and other materials I have at hand. The video tapes I work with are from my husband's collection (as he replaces his tapes with DVDs) and ones donated by friends. The sculptures are getting larger and are beginning to include other types of plastic and trash.

An additional art installation will be going up in the BAC parking lot next week as well!

Re: “One day left

You're assuming that evangelicals (or any other Christians) are paying any attention to Mr. Camping's proclaimation. I've heard this kind of things many times in my personal half-century of living and, so far, they've all been wrong.

According to the Bible, we won't/can't know when the rapture is supposed to happen. But people have been predicting it (wrongly) for a couple millennia now so I don't think they'll stop trying anytime soon.
