To clear up a few things, UpaDowna is an advocate of outdoor events and all ages/ability friendly events. This promoted both so we supported it, plus....it kicked ass on the fun factor!! Next, Slide the City's costs are so expensive, they have to spend close to 3/4ths what they make, so even if they brought in close to $100,000, their costs were about $75,000...think about that first. Like any major event, costs are so great that you are not going to get rich off one event. Don't get mad at the event, get mad at people who APPROVE said events...STC got APPROVED to shut down the street and APPROVED to use the water, so...obviously someone at the city thought it was ok to do these things or else STC wouldn't have been there. Also, most neighbors didn't have a problem with the street being shut down, they had a way out, tons of cars in neighborhoods were not an issue and many said they wanted it back. This event is no different than the Color Run which is coming, will shut down major streets, pay the city money, seek volunteers and partner with a local (hopefully) nonprofit to give back the average 5-7% to their organization.
“The fact is, the directive pertains to commercial photography and filming only – if you’re there to gather news or take recreational photographs, no permit would be required." http://www.fs.fed.us/news/releases/us-fore…
Parking for downtown businesses is such a bother anyways. 9 times out of 10, I can't find a spot near my destination so I either use the garages or ride a bike. I don't think "parking" is the reason to say no to a pedestrian mall. Shut down Tejon from Colorado to Platte, or even Bijou, and open it up to pedestrians, cyclists, food trucks, street performers and more. Talk about "better block"! This would be better blocks! Downtown Partnerships "First Friday Art Walk" would be much more enjoyable being able to walk back and forth across Tejon into the various galleries! Make moveable planters that fill the former street with beauty, but move to the side when there are Olympic Celebrations and other street parties. Think of the money/time that could be saved by not having to close the street for events. I don't know, maybe it's just me but I'd be downtown a lot more with Tejon closed. Right now, I avoid it at all costs.
